Led Zeppelin Photography by Barrie Wentzell “Taken from stage front, strangely enough, but in those days I was the only photographer and given free rein to shoot as I pleased by Peter Grant and the band, something unheard of in these times. It was a great gig and Led Zeppelin was at the height of their amazing musical creativity and heaviness.”

Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin Photography by Barrie Wentzell “Jimmy had this beautiful boathouse on the river and after our interview he took us out to the local “olde tea shop.” It was a bit dark to take pictures amidst the little old ladies and cakes so we went down to the river’s edge. Just after this shot a fast launch went by and soaked us.”

Burt Bacharach: 'Trump is dangerous – my songs are a form of resistance' ‘Songwriting was hard then, but it’s really hard now’ ... Burt Bacharach. He adored Dusty, drove Cilla to exhaustion and had so many hits he lost count. Now, the 90-year-old says it’s time to get political

“I don’t know how many songs I’ve written, I don’t know how many hits I’ve had,” says Burt Bacharach when we meet in a dining room by the ocean in Santa Monica. “I’m not a good counter.”
You can see why he might have trouble keeping track. Bacharach has won six Grammys and three Oscars, had 73 hits in the US Billboard 100 and 52 in the UK top 40 – and that’s at the time of going to press. He will be 91 on Sunday, but still performs, tours and writes, with new material set for release this year.
His mother encouraged him to play piano and he became infatuated with jazz. Being underage, he would sneak into nightclubs to catch big bands after falling for Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.
“Somebody took me to a street where the music was totally different from anything I’d ever heard. It was the bebop era at the Spotlight club in New York City. Sometimes there’d be more people on the bandstand than there’d be in the audience. I didn’t know what I was gonna do with my life. I just knew I loved this music.”
After studying music at university and serving in the army, he was hired as a conductor for Vic Damone (“I lasted three weeks and got fired”) and Marlene Dietrich (“not my kind of music – very German”). Then, while conducting the vocal quartet the Ames Brothers in Las Vegas, Bacharach was struck by the simplicity of their work. “I thought it would be easy to write songs like those and make hits,” he says. And so he began …

Gigantic: The Story Of Frank Black And The Pixies, 2nd Revised Edition by John Mendelssohn
English | December 15th, 2009 | ASIN: B0030ZMXV6, ISBN: 184609495X | 222 Pages | EPUB | 3.98 MB
The influence and importance of The Pixies cannot be overestimated. Their style of broken, furious yet melodic and exceptionally catchy punk rock blazed a trail for such vital bands as Mudhoney and Nirvana, the grunge movement and the 90s British indie-rock sound. Bossanova and Surfer Rosa have become familiar members of the canon of great rock albums, although the group’s initial career was cut short by the dismissive actions of singer-songwriter Black Francis/Frank Black. John Mendelssohn’s biography details the turbulent career of The Pixies and Frank Black, including personal struggles with other band members and Black’s unusual and uncompromising solo work. Culminating with the group’s 2004 reformation, this is the definitive story of The Pixies.
Certainly no singer has been more mythologized and more misunderstood than Billie Holiday, who helped to create much of the mystique herself with her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues. "Now, finally, we have a definitive biography," said Booklist of Donald Clarke's Billie Holiday, "by a deeply compassionate, respectful, and open-minded biographer [whose] portrait embraces every facet of Holiday's paradoxical nature, from her fierceness to her vulnerability, her childlikeness to her innate elegance and amazing strength." Clarke was given unrivaled access to a treasure trove of interviews from the 1970sinterviews with those who knew Lady Day from her childhood in the streets and good-time houses of Baltimore through the early days of success in New York and into the years of fame, right up to her tragic decline and death at the age of forty-four. Clarke uses these interviews to separate fact from fiction and, in the words of the Seattle Times, "finally sets us straight. . .evoking her world in all its anguish, triumph, force and irony." Newsday called this "a thoroughly riveting account of Holiday and her milieu." The New York Times raved that it "may be the most thoroughly valuable of the many books on Holiday," and Helen Oakley Dance in JazzTimes said, "We should probably have to wait a long time for another life of Billie Holiday to supersede Donald Clarke's achievement." https://novafile.com/145clfe5xpvw
