With Roger Waters promoting his new opera, Ca Ira, one question has been constant - will he and Pink Floyd work together again in the future? The group was the hit of July's Live 8 concerts when it reunited in London's Hyde Park, and rumors have been rampant about mega-million dollar offers for a full-scale tour. But Waters told us that it will take another event like Live 8 to bring the quartet together again:

"I don't think we're gonna see a world tour or anything. But I think something specific, some worthy thing, I think it would be great."

Pink Floyd's Live 8 performance will be featured on the Live 8 DVD that's coming out on November 8th.

Ca Ira is an opera about the French Revolution, which Waters wrote from a libretto by Etienne and Nadine Roda Gil. A live performance of the piece is scheduled for November 17th in Rome, with North American dates being eyed for 2006.

Hi Ho All,

Well as expected, the vacuum of comments on Ca Ira is up there with the
deafening silence after the children are shot at the end of "To Take Your
Hat Off ...". Although I understand many folks won't bother
buying/listening
to it; so be it.

But I love it! I can't stop playing it. In the garden, the car, doing the
cooking or cleaning, or even finding some time to just sit still and let
it
wash over me in all its wonderful glory.

Being the easily pleased chappy that I am, one of the highlights of operas
in general is when the chorus gets into full swing. Annoyingly, this may
only happen for a few minutes once or twice in any given opera. Evidently
Roger is a big fan of this part as well, as the chorus pops in and out
continually, which may sicken purists, but pleases the hell out of me!

And Paul Groves steals the show for me, closely followed by Ying Huang.
Bryn, although good, is a comfortable fifth behind the two choruses.

'priest' is stunning, especially in "In Paris there's a rumble under the
ground ..."

But not only is the music and singing deeply moving, as with everything
Roger has written about, the lyrics/plot are equally moving as well
(taking
into account we will never know what exactly was written by him, but it
drips Roger Waters all over the place). Celebratory, infuriating,
depressing
in specific places. But overall deeply moving as you empathise with these
people and what they must have been through to do their little bit to
change
the world forever.

A question to folks who know such things ... I have read in reviews and
been
told in private mail that it isn't an opera. So my simple question is
'what
is it?'. And there is no point to say it's more like Andrew Lloyd Webber
or
whoever, because they don't constitute a genre of music in their own
right;
only Pink Floyd does that!

My good lady wife says it's more of a West End musical, but I know more
about the French Revolution than I do West End musicals, and 95% my
knowledge of the French Revolution can be found in the Ca Ira booklet!

So even if general thoughts aren't that forthcoming, definitions would be
greatly appreciated.

PROG ROCK FESTIVAL INCLUDES FLOYD TRIBUTE

Under the headline of "More flares than a Lifeboat station open day", news has arrived of a prog rock festival coming up in December.

"The First Night of the Progs" promises an evening of classic rock, from three tribute bands, amongst them Perfect Alibi, a Pink Floyd cover band whose reputation is growing rapidly. The other bands taking part are Boot-Led-Zeppelin and The Logical Tramps (a Supertramp tribute).

Each band will perform a full set of between 75 and 90 minutes during the evening, and with each band having local ties to the venue in Reading, England (with the exception of the Tramps saxophonist who commutes to each gig from France!), tickets for the event are expected to sell quickly.

We've had a number of reports from Brain Damage readers of Perfect Alibi concerts, all of which have been impressed with the quality of the musicianship. Perfect Alibi are scheduled to be the middle band appearing at the show.

PINK FLOYD - 2005 UK MUSIC HALL OF FAME UPDATE


Back on 8th September we were first to bring you the news that Pink Floyd are amongst the inductees to the 2005 UK Music Hall Of Fame. We have a couple of updates for you, including news of how fans worldwide can listen live to the induction ceremony, being held on 16th November at London's Alexandra Palace.

Despite original expectations that the same line up of the band that appeared at London's Live 8 concert in July - David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright - were due to appear at the event, it is now looking very unlikely that Roger will be able to make it. As regular Brain Damage readers know, Roger will be performing the premiere of his opera, Ca Ira, in Rome on the 17th November - the following night - so will be preoccupied with final arrangements for this show.

The 2005 UK Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 TV channel, as a two-hour special on the 17th November, at (we understand) 9pm. However, the great news for Floyd fans across the world is that the BBC's Radio 2 will be broadcasting the whole event live on the 16th. For those who can't pick up the radio signal, www.BBC.co.uk stream all their programmes live via the internet, with every show available to listen to on demand for seven days following broadcast.

LIVE 8 DVD - PINK FLOYD SEGMENT UPDATE

The much-anticipated 4 DVD release of the Live 8 concerts was fully announced last month, giving detail of the tracklisting and extra features, and additional international single discs which concentrates on individual shows.

There was fantastic news for Pink Floyd fans, as the headline-making reunion with Roger Waters is included in full on the main set, along with footage of the Floyd's rehearsals for the concert. However, detail on what this entailed has, until now, been sketchy.

We've now heard what the fourth DVD contains in terms of Floyd content. It has ten minutes of the rehearsals, with the band performing Wish You Were Here, alongside interviews with members of the band; you can also see Roger and David Gilmour jokingly reproaching Nick Mason about the finale of Wish You Were Here.

As yet, we don't know which rehearsals are shown - either the dress rehearsals in Hyde Park, or the main rehearsals in the North London studios they used for three days prior to the show. However, with the DVD hitting stores in three weeks time, not long to wait!

___ The December issue of Record Collector features a great 4 page interview with Roger Waters. Titled 'The Missing Link the interview covers the recent Ca Ira release and Live 8 and also features a new poem by Roger. The poem goes something like.
