ROGER WATERS "CA IRA" - FRENCH RELEASE UPDATE



With Roger Waters wonderful operatic work "Ca Ira" being released this week in most countries tomorrow and Tuesday (read our exclusive, full review here), we have an update for our French visitors.

Stores in France will not be stocking the album until October 10th, which we believe is due to production difficulties. However, our French readers should find "Ca Ira" worth the wait!

To give you a taster of the deluxe package, that includes the full opera on two hybrid SACDs (playable on normal CD players), we have an exclusive excerpt from the DVD that is also included, for you.

PINK FLOYD SCORED ZABRISKIE POINT ON UK TV

Antonioni's classic Zabriskie Point, which famously enlisted the help of Pink Floyd to provide music for the score, is receiving a rare airing on UK television this week.

Stories from the recording sessions are legendary, with the band indulging in fine food and wines, before strolling down to the studios, producing music that was described by Antonioni as "beautiful...but too sad!"

Some excellent music was produced during the sessions, and many of the takes have since been released on an expanded edition of the soundtrack album. There are also some unofficial releases with further takes. In the end, the most memorable track in the film is "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up" - a version of Careful With That Axe Eugene that is used to great effect at the explosive finale to the film.

For those who want to take (another) look at the film, it is being broadcast on UK TV on Thursday 29th September, screening on TCM (Turner Classic Movies), a satellite channel, at 23:35hrs BST (GMT+1).

GERALD SCARFE - EXHIBITIONS, ILLUSTRATED TALKS & BOOK SIGNINGS


We reported on 3rd September of the publication on November 3rd of "Drawing Blood: Forty Five Years of Scarfe Uncensored", an eager-awaited book that sees highlights of Gerald Scarfe's career compiled into a lavish hardback book.

The book promises to be a feast for all Floyd fans, due to his extensive work with the band, over the years. Gerald's PA has also told us that the book features a few illustrations from The Wall which haven't been seen before - alongside the five decades of incredibly varied work he has done for all sorts of people and publications.

To coincide with the release, there are a number of events lined up:

9th November - (closure date TBC): exhibition at Fine Art Society, Bond Street, London

We had the pleasure of attending one of Gerald's illustrated talks in London, last year, and it was a fascinating and amusing look at his career, including his work with Pink Floyd. Definitely worth going to one of these, if you can.

«Пинк Флойд» собирается приехать в Израиль

«Пинк Флойд», одна из величайших групп в истории рок-музыки, возможно, приедет в Израиль в январе 2007 года. Продюсер Шуки Вайс сообщил, что в настоящее время ведет с группой переговоры, состояние которых он определяет как «очень продвинутое».

Классический состав «Пинк Флойд» воссоединился этим летом для единственного выступления в рамках глобального благотворительного проекта «Live 8», посвященного борьбе с бедностью в странах Африки. В ходе этой акции за один день на 10-ти площадках в Токио, Берлине, Париже, Филадельфии, Йоханнесбурге, Риме, Москве, Филадельфии, Барри и Корнуолле под лозунгом «Сделаем бедность историей» выступило порядка 160 групп и музыкантов.

Ради помощи голодающим Роджер Уотерс впервые за 24 года забыл о разногласиях и присоединился к Дэвиду Гилмору, Нику Мейсону и Ричарду Райту.

Огромный успех выступления заставил участников группы задуматься о продолжении совместной работы. Сейчас они планируют на 2007 год мировое гастрольное турне, частью которого, возможно, станет Израиль. «Пинк Флойд» никогда прежде не посещали нашу страну, однако стало известно их высказывание о том, что они были бы рады выступить в Израиле с целью внести свой вклад в развитие мирного процесса на Ближнем Востоке.

По словам Шуки Вайса, предполагается, что выступление состоится в каком-нибудь особенном месте, например, в парке Тимна (25 км к северу от Эйлата), и превратится в «событие международного масштаба».

'Ca Ira' just another brick in Waters' musical wall

Back in his days with Pink Floyd, Roger Waters took on the big issues of life. In high-concept projects like ''The Dark Side of the Moon'' and ''The Wall,'' he grappled with such challenging topics as social oppression, the long shadows of war, the interplay of money and power, and the abuse of authority.

Since 1989, Waters wrestled with many of those same concerns in a genre new to him: an opera, set during the French Revolution. The result, ''Ca Ira,'' arrives in stores Tuesday from Columbia/Sony BMG Masterworks. Spread over two Super Audio CDs and accompanied by a ''making of'' DVD and a lavish 60-page booklet, the recording features a first-rate cast, including bass baritone Bryn Terfel, soprano Ying Huang and tenor Paul Groves.

The opera's setting and themes were inspired by a libretto written for the French Revolution's bicentennial by songwriter Etienne Roda-Gil and his wife, Nadine, who also created gorgeous illustrations for their co-written text. (Some of those images are included in the booklet.) Introduced to the couple by a mutual friend, Waters took on the task of writing the opera's music, adding another dimension to these artistic portraits of characters like King Louis Capet, Marie Antoinette and the revolutionaries who changed the course of history.

''Eventually, though,'' Waters recalls, ''Sony urged me to use English instead of French, so I wrote an English version of Etienne and Nadine's work, and then I felt compelled to expand on their original text. Their work was really a series of gorgeous tableaux, and I added more personal narrative and history for some of the characters.''

Waters' music recalls the lush, hyper-Romantic sound of opera composers like Puccini. ''[He is] definitely an inspiration,'' concurs Waters, who also sees commonalities between some of Puccini's own music and his own: ''After all, his opera 'Tosca' takes place in a police state.''

It will not come as much surprise to Pink Floyd fans that ''Ca Ira'' also contains a number of non-musical elements. Waters' full concept involves sound effects, a number of non-singing roles and a staging inspired by the theatrical conceit of a three-ring circus. ''All of this,'' he concedes, ''would be hugely expensive to mount.'' As a result, the opera has yet to be staged live, though a concert performance is planned for November in Rome.

Waters sees strong parallels between the turbulence of the French Revolution and contemporary geopolitics.

''All my life,'' muses Waters, whose father died in World War II, ''I have been preoccupied with the great tragedy of losing family in wars. The pain of losing a parent or a child in [an act of] violence that is purposefully and directly generated by political forces is in a certain way harder to bear that if someone dies in, say, an accident. The death feels more preventable.''
