OK, I admit it. I have been in St Barths since the 3rd, writing with Peter Mayer, Roger Guth and Jimmy Buffett. I think we have some good stuff going. And I am healed, brethren, healed of the January blues. Healed by the warmth and the water and the food and the good company. And the solitude of a Caribbean beach and time to contemplate and write.

At least for a few days.

I just had lunch with Buffett and Roger Waters. Yes, that Roger Waters. The one from Pink Floyd. The Wall. Bong hits in your college dorm to Dark Side of the Moon. And he was nice. He told jokes and ate french fries. We poured each other wine. International rock stardom is everything it is cracked up to be.

I’d shoot the shit with the dude from Pink Floyd, take a sip of French rose wine and then jog off down the beach for a swim, then head back to the table for some wahoo tartare, lightly grilled.

Ooh la la.

Again, I think we helped Jimmy finish a couple of great songs for his next album. For our efforts, we had a few winter days in the sun at St Barths, eating French food, drinking French wine and sitting around like rock stars.

One last dinner out. Sushi with Jimmy and the guys. Oh, and Roger Waters and his lovely wife Laurie. Jimmy, Peter and Roger (Guth) got up and played a set. Did Piece of Work. Crowd went nuts like they always do for Jimmy Freaking Buffett. Then we went back to the table and hung around a little longer. Here are some things I learned today—Bon Jovi’s keyboard player’s girlfriend has great taste in music—-Roger Waters loves Neil Young’s record Rust Never Sleeps—he also digs Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder a whole lot. But he really admires Powderfinger and Thrasher off Rust Never Sleeps. I mean this is the guy from The Wall and that record you play along with The Wizard of Oz. He said the first show he went off to see in London (RW grew up in Cambridge) was a package tour with Gene Vincent, Helen Shapiro and the Rolling Stones. A few years later, he told me, he was on a package tour himself, with Jimi Hendrix, The Pink Floyd and The Nice.

Oh, the life of a would be internationally licensed rock star.

Roger Water, co-founder and principal songwriter of the archetypal progressive rock band Pink Floyd, will perform his magnum opus, "The Dark Side Of The Moon," in its entirety, during his upcoming European concert tour.

The eagerly-awaited Roger Waters concert tour will combine an evening's worth of music, comprised of two sets plus encores, with state-of-the-art staging, lighting and sound.

Set One will be a newly-shaped version of Waters' highly-successful "In The Flesh" repertoire providing a comprehensive overview of Waters' music including early Pink Floyd material; classic compositions from the masterpiece "The Wall"; beloved pieces from "Animals," "Wish You Were Here," and "The Final Cut"; and songs from Waters' solo tours de force: "Amused To Death" and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking."

Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon" was originally released in 1973 immediately establishing a standard of excellence for its advanced blend of progressive music, philosophical themes, and sonic exploration. A brilliantly-wrought song-cycle detailing the conundrums of humanity's place in a modern technocracy, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" achieved a soulful austerity of mood while foreshadowing the role of electronica in an emerging youth culture.

"The Dark Side Of The Moon" reached an unparalleled level of aesthetic and commercial success becoming one of the world's top-selling albums of all time. The album remained in the Billboard Top 200 best-selling albums chart for a record-breaking 15 years and, as recently as 2003, occupied the # 1 spot on the Billboard Pop Catalog chart. John Peel, the British broadcaster who died last year on Oct 25, made a huge impact on bands and music fans during his lengthy career with the BBC. BigO remembers him by featuring for the next few weeks some of the sterling music he introduced. It has always been the duty of DJs and music critics to spot trends and highlight talent that otherwise would be ignored. Peel was never a follower of fashion but always searching for music that spoke a different language from the conventional. Oct 13 is International John Peel Day.

When John Peel was alive, he was more than a radio presenter. He championed music, music that wasn't fashionable or current. You could say he was interested in all kinds of music and probably felt that different music could appeal to different people. In memory of John Peel, who died October 25, 2004, here are two early Pink Floyd shows presented by Peel.

On July 16, 1970, Pink Floyd performed at the Paris Cinema in London. As stated in the liner notes to The Floyd's Of London, " Peel, at the time, was something of a maverick. Bucking the Top-40 format, he was more interested in promoting almost anything that was not in the mainstream, and had been a huge admirer of the Pink Floyd."

The tracks performed were:

Appearing on the Peel Sunday Concert, this was considered a landmark concert where the group premiered two new pieces, If and Atom Heart Mother. The show was first broadcast July 19, 1970. This show was re-broadcast on Swedish Radio, P3 on October 7, 2005.

Almost a year later, on Sept 30, 1971, at the same venue, the group performed the following tracks:

5. Echoes
6. Blues

This set was broadcast on Peel's In Concert programme on Oct 12, 1971. This was the first time two key songs were performed on the BBC - Echoes (at one point it was called The Return Of The Son Of Nothing) and One Of These Days. But fans will probably want to listen to the rarity that is Blues.

The quality of these shows is brilliant. Our copy comes from the Japanese Pink Floyd specialist label Ayanami.

We reported back on 22nd December that early Pink Floyd producer Joe Boyd is putting the finishing touches to his autobiography, looking at his work in the music industry in the sixties.

Boyd is also the subject of a BBC Radio 2 profile, as part of the "Without Frontiers" < http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/gillett/showinfo.shtml > series. In the series, Charlie Gillett focuses on so-called invisible visionaries, the behind-the-scenes people who work as producers, record label bosses and A&R men. This seventh programme in the series takes a close look at Boyd's career, and airs on Wednesday, February 22nd, at 10pm.

As with all BBC radio broadcasts, it can be heard on FM radio, on digital cable, satellite and freeview, on DAB radio, and through the "Listen Live" and "Listen Again" facilities at www.bbc.co.uk/radio2.

Boyd's book, "White Bicycles: Making Music In The 1960s" is published by Serpent's Tail on 27th May 2006, and covers his work with the Syd Barrett line up of the Floyd, where he worked on their session at Sound Techniques Studios, and on the single release of Arnold Layne.

However, Pink Floyd were a small part of his work; other artists he worked with in his roles as record and film producer included Muddy Waters, the Incredible String Band and Richard Thompson. He also founded and was the musical director of the UFO Club in London with John "Hoppy" Hopkins.

We recently reported ( http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/news/0601161.html ) that a vast cache of rare concert recordings made by the Bill Graham concert promotion company from the 1960s onwards, had been discovered in a warehouse.

Ongoing efforts are being made to catalogue, clean up and, where possible, release the recordings - and one of these that can now be heard is part of a Pink Floyd performance from 1977.

Bill Graham and his concert promotion company, Bill Graham Presents, produced more than 35,000 concerts all over the world, performed by the likes of the Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and many more. A number of these were recorded for posterity.

The concert tapes lay dormant until the Bill Graham archive was acquired by Wolfgang's Vault (Bill Graham's given first name was Wolfgang) in 2003.

Wolfgang's Vault has, for a while, offered a good selection of very rare Floyd items, that you can view through this special link -> http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/catalog.aspx?PerformingArtistID=5541|6053|1662&aid=543157 . They have now also added onto their site, Vault Radio < http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/Static.aspx...o.htm&CategoryID=RA&LeftNav=Audio/RadioNav.htm > which is playing selected tracks from a number of concerts in an FM-quality, 128K digital radio stream. Songs will be added to and removed from the radio show on a regular basis.

On the current playlist, is Pink Floyd's performance at Oakland's Coliseum Arena, on 9th May 1977. You can hear the band run through "Have A Cigar" - a nice, tight performance, in very good sound quality.

As this is a radio stream, you might have to be patient, and listen for a while before the Floyd performance comes round, but it is worth it. Many of the other artist's selections are good to listen to, as well - and the site asks for feedback on the service. You could easily ask for more Floyd, and even put in a request for a complete show to either be aired or released on CD! The feedback form is there - make sure you use it if you want to hear more! Remember, they possibly have recorded shows dating back to 1967... a tempting proposition!

Wendy Bannister, wife of the legendary concert promotor Freddy Bannister, has contacted us with details of another box set offer that they have put together especially for Brain Damage, which takes a retrospective look at the concerts they promoted with the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin playing.

It is now confirmed that Nick Mason will be visiting Hungary next week, as part of the promotion for his excellent book, "Inside Out - A Personal History Of Pink Floyd".

He will be taking part in a book signing session on Monday, February 20th, at 4:30pm in the Bahnhof Music Club. This is found in Nyugati Square, next to the train station. This will be the second time that a Floyd member has visited Hungary (the first was when Roger Waters did a show in 2002 as part of the "In The Flesh Tour").

The local organisers are expecting a lot of people will attend the signing, which is scheduled to last for two hours, and so have asked that people only bring the book to be signed so that everyone gets a fair chance at seeing Nick.

The appearance marks the recent release in Hungary of the latest translation of his book, which is already selling strongly. With Nick's appearance next week, many more copies are expected to be sold in the next few days!

I have a dream

Roger Waters, 62, was initial member of the British group Pink Floyd. To their largest successes the albums "The WALL" and "Dark Side OF The Moon" belong. 1983 left Roger Waters the volume in the controversy and began a solo career. After nearly 25 years it arose in past July with the live-8 in London for the first time again together with Pink Floyd. On it he presented his newest work briefly: "CA IRA", an opera over the French revolution. Roger Waters dreams about a world without religions

I dream about a world without religions. The idea of the faith brought the human life in disorder. If it were at least clear that there is God, would great be it if it would appear. Then one could clarify, what one expects from each other, and a rational relationship to lead. But this uncertainty – Does God exist? Doesn't God exist? – prevents us to take the life into the hand. It prevents us to accept that each individual must strive itself, its life circumstances to improve.

I do not believe in a personal God. Which is located in the Bible, is strange to me. I was not ever in a situation, in which I did not further-know and had turned me to a higher power. But I admit: It seems in the human nature to be appropriate to follow a religious group. We have all modern development to the defiance a village mentality as in primitive times. At that time there was a Schamanen, which stated, to know everything better than the remainder of the population. The people believed him, because they could not examine its statements empirically. And if the Schamanen accumulated power, they grew to groups and organizations – and then it became bloody. In the name of the Christian church so much blood was poured that I cannot take it any longer seriously.

Perhaps I become religious on the dying bed, but that can last calmly still another little. I see something Goettliches rather in the science, mathematical rules have a goettliche beauty. Perhaps one should leave the world nevertheless to the scientists. I think, a government, that would consist only of scientists, from empirical facts be led could.

As the first it would have to solve the largest problem of mankind: the rearrangement of the wealth. It would have us, which realms, of it to convince, to divide our money and our knowledge with the arms. Then we could create a world of the equal rights together. Of it we are today further ever distant. Briefly after the French revolution and the establishment of the United States of America end 18. The healthy foxes got off, and those weak ones were dead-bitten immediately. There nobody suffered. Fox hunt is a reasonable kind of controlling the population. To be killed the animals must anyway. But Tony Blair and the city people will never understand that.

I cannot trust Blair so far, as I can spit. As a boy it wanted to become a skirt star, or? There we see, what from it became: a mixture from Maggie Thatcher and Dschingis Khan. It is a war driver. It states still that Bush and it would have acted correctly in the Iraq – despite everything that happened since then. The Iraq war as fight against the terrorism? That I do not laugh. Without this war it would have given no notices on the Londoner to underground. When I saw the reports on the television, the families wrong did to me. And I thought: Blair, you is an idiot. Why did you plot this war?

Nevertheless it advanced the remission of debts for Africa. If Blair makes progressive policy, I do not have a problem to support. And that was reliably a reason, why I went through in the previous summer in Live one 8 in the Hyde Park. I admire Bob Geldof and Bono of U2 for it, as they sharpened consciousness for Africa, even if their Gejammer is to be borne occasionally with difficulty. But it was worthwhile itself: Before a few years the public no little was interested nevertheless in Africa. That changed approximately by the live-8 around the world.


I had still another another drive to go through in Live8. It was for me a kind test whether I succeed in overcoming my Ego. To let rest old stories. We, thus Pink Floyd, got strong reactions to our appearance. It was a magic moment, again with nods Mason to stand for Rick WRIGHT and David Gilmour on the stage. I would not have thought even that I would enjoy it in such a way.

I believe, if one releases its own end of the bone, then win one large liberty. One of the most important questions of the life is nevertheless: Am I courageously enough to make me in the long run? To open me someone and create a connection, at whose end love stands? This opening, in the long run making is for me the sense of the life. And but we don't need Gods.
