Phoenix Denies Report of Breakdown on Set

NEW YORK - He wasn't grief-stricken, he was acting, Joaquin Phoenix says of tabloid reports that he had a breakdown while filming the upcoming Johnny Cash biopic.

Phoenix banged his head on a bedpost during a scene related to Cash's brother's death, prompting speculation that he was reacting to the 1993 death of his brother, River.

The 30-year-old actor tells Newsweek he was just trying to get into the emotional state of his character.

"You know, the press has kind of imposed upon me the title of Mourning Brother, and because I haven't been vocal about it, the assumption is that I'm holding onto this (expletive) that's just not there," he tells the magazine, now on newsstands.

His brother River Phoenix died of a drug overdose outside a Los Angeles nightclub when he was 23.

Suggesting that he'd use his personal life for "Walk the Line," says Phoenix, "kind of makes me sick."

"I don't need to pull from my experience for a character, and I've never understood why actors would, except for lack of ability, imagination or research," he says. "I had all three things, so this is a little frustrating to me, because it denies my work and the research that I did."

"Walk the Line," scheduled for release in November, traces Cash's rise from the son of an Arkansas farmer to the "Man in Black." It co-stars Reese Witherspoon as Cash's wife, June Carter.

Final Highwaymen Album Gets Expanded

The third and final album from country supergroup the Highwaymen -- Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson -- will be reissued in expanded form this fall to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

"The Road Goes on Forever" will arrive Sept. 27 via Capitol Nashville/EMI Music Catalog Marketing bolstered with six previously unreleased tracks. A second edition will be available with a new DVD chronicling the making of the album.

Among the bonus songs are the unused studio track "If He Came Back Again," Nelson and Cash's version of "Back in the Saddle Again" and four acoustic demos later re-cut with a band for "The Road Goes on Forever." Lone surviving Highwaymen Nelson and Kristofferson have contributed new liner notes for the packaging.

Beyond the video for "Is Is What It Is," footage for the DVD was shot in the studio by album producer Don Was and is seeing its first commercial release here. Beginning Oct. 14, a newly created documentary on the Highwaymen will premiere on CMT.

The Highwaymen are perhaps best known for "Highwayman," the title cut from their 1995 debut album and unofficial group theme song. It reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, while the album was a long-running No. 1 on the Top Country Albums tally.

Cash sets posthumous new record on album chart By Fred Bronson

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - More than 46 years after making his first appearance on the Billboard album chart, Johnny Cash has rewritten chart history by coming up with the highest-debuting title of his career.

"The Legend of Johnny Cash," the 41st charting album by the Man in Black, entered The Billboard 200 at No. 11 in the week ended October 30, as promotional efforts gather momentum ahead of the November 18 release of the Cash movie "Walk the Line."

That makes this new set the third highest-charting album of Cash's career. The only two LPs to chart higher were "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" (No. 1 for four weeks in 1969) and "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" (No. 6 in 1970). Pushed down to fourth place is "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" (No. 13 in 1968).

On the Top Country Albums list, "The Legend of Johnny Cash" bowed at No. 3 and is the 75th Cash album to chart. It is the highest-ranking album by the late country veteran since "American IV: The Man Comes Around" peaked at No. 2 the week of September 27, 2003, shortly after his death. Of Cash's 75 chart entries on the tally, nine have achieved pole position, six have reached the runner-up spot and four have gone to No. 3.

Since Cash appeared on the very first country album chart, published in January 1964, he once again holds the record for the longest chart span, which now stretches to almost 42 years. Cash has to share that record with George Jones, who also appeared on that very first country album chart. Jones slipped to No. 34 last week with "Hits I Missed... And One I Didn't."

Johnny Cash admitted just weeks before his death that he was “thrilled” that Joaquin Phoenix would play him in his movie biopic.

Speaking about the casting, movie director James Mangold said that Cash was a big fan of Joaquin’s movies and that he saw parallels between himself and the actor.

Mangold told mtv: “Cash loved 'Gladiator', He knew all the lines.”

Speaking about the news of Joaquin playing him in the film, mangold said "He was thrilled. John was a very trusting man. He was very easygoing, a very cool guy.

“When you've got someone like Joaquin who, frankly, is very similar, a very cool actor, John knew that we were moving in the right direction."

здесь можно и послушать и посмотреть кусочек концерта Джонни Кэша в Остине, в Знаменитом Сити Лимитс, 3 января 1987 года. Джонни исполняет знаменитый ‘Folsom Prison Blues’. Шикарная песня, ну а исполнение...тут и говорить нечего. Тюремный кантри-вестерн-блюз-фолк мало кто мог делать так как он.
