Two skeletons, said to have been used by Entwistle to play pranks on house guests, fetched £200 and £220.

One of the more unusual lots on offer, a miniature alien rock band, was sold for £580.

But a mounted bust of Princess Anne made to commemorate her wedding to Captain Mark Phillips fetched only £35.

Fans bid more than £1m for guitars and other memorabilia belonging to Entwistle at a sale at Sotheby's in London in May 2003.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Let's hope "My Generation" is making some serious money.

Legendary rock band The Who will play its only U.S. performance this year at a charity dinner where tickets are $1,500 apiece, promoters said on Tuesday.

Tables run as high as $30,000, which include a seat with an honoree, promoters said. Honorees include former basketball star Magic Johnson, New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre, golf legend Arnold Palmer, former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason, rocker Jon Bon Jovi and former ice hockey great Wayne Gretzky.

The June 13 concert at Gotham Hall will benefit Samsung's Four Seasons of Hope, an umbrella charity that donates money to children's organizations. The charity is sponsored by Samsung Electronics America, a subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co .

Benefit tickets can run as high as these prices, industry experts said, but commercial concert ticket prices rarely reach such levels.

Prices for Rolling Stones tickets this summer are running as high as $450, while tickets to the 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concerts in Madison Square Garden reached as high as $2,500.

The Who's hits include "My Generation" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" and albums "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia."

TOWNSHEND IN FEUD WITH DOCUMENTARY DIRECTOR

LATEST: PETE TOWNSHEND is refusing to grant permission for THE WHO's music to be used in a documentary about the legendary British rockers.

The two surviving Who members, guitarist Townshend and singer ROGER DALTREY, initially teamed up with OSCAR-winning director MURRAY LERNER to create a fans-eye perspective of the band.

But now Townshend has severed all connections with the project, angered that Lerner has called on fans to provide bootleg footage of the group.

He has issued a formal statement attacking the documentary on his website, in which he insists he's no longer the driving force behind the project and is refusing access to The Who's back catalogue.

Townshend writes: "My music - Who music - is not a commodity I will unconditionally available to film makers.

"My entire mission is to preserve the integrity of Who music, I'd rather offer it to sell soap than have it turned into a 'soap' by Lerner."

The feud is expected to delay production of the documentary, which was due to hit cinemas next year (06).

For Pete Townshend, the kids are all right. But a certain film about the kids isn't.

The Who mastermind is distancing himself from an in-the-works documentary about the legendary band by Oscar-winning filmmaker Murray Lerner and Spitfire Films, criticizing the project's creative direction.


A press release issued by Lerner and Spitfire last week hyped My Generation: Who's Still Who as the "definitive and authorized record of one of the most influential and highly regarded rock groups of the 20th century." It also stated that both Townshend and Who frontmant Roger Daltrey agreed to provide archival materials and music from their catalogue for the feature film, which is slated to hit theaters sometime in 2006.

"Roger, Pete and all of us are very proud to be working with Murray Lerner," said Bill Curbishley, whose company Trinifold Management manages the Who. "Our ambition is that this film will have all the epic qualities, energies and excitement of a great Who album. We have assembled a great team and look forward to getting to work."

All, that is, except for Townshend.

In a May 28 diary entry on PeteTownshend.com, the 60-year-old guitarist took issue with the press release, denying that he was a producer on the flick and stating that the real "driving force" behind My Generation was Daltrey, the Who's managers and Spitfire honcho Nigel Sinclair.

Townshend also lashed out at Lerner for "trying to create some controversy" after hearing the director lay out his vision for the documentary in a recent interview.

"There will be very unusual stuff, hopefully that never was seen before," Lerner told Reuters last week. "We're looking for material like fights between them, on and off the stage, unruly fans that make it difficult, weird incidents on the stage, interviews with ex-wives and girlfriends."

Lerner even set up a Website, TheWhoMovie.com, where fans can submit their own band memorabilia, including photos and footage.

The filmmaker is no stranger to the Who, having shot the famed concert The Who--Live at the Isle of Wight 1970. He also scored an Oscar nomination for Festival, a documentary chronicling the Newport Folk and Jazz Festival that featured Bob Dylan's historic first electric performance. Lerner eventually won the Oscar for another music-oriented doc, From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China.

"I'm going to try and put you in another world that almost smacks of...science fiction," he added. "I'm doing something like an opera...I'm going to play around with stylizing interview voices that change into music and back."

Apparently worried the Who's history will play out like a soap opera-like production, Townshend threatened to withhold Lerner's access to the band's recordings unless the filmmaker focus more on the music.

"I am the one in the Who family who writes science fiction musicals and operas, and my music--Who music--is not a commodity I will make unconditionally available to filmmakers. My entire mission is to preserve the integrity of Who music, and I'd rather offer it to sell soap than have it turned into a 'soap' by Lerner," said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer..

Neither Lerner nor reps for Spitfire could be reached for comment.

Spitfire also has in the pipeline Martin Scorsese's documentary on Dylan titled No Direction Home: Bob Dylan.

Meanwhile, still no word yet when the Who will release that long-promised new album, the British rockers' first batch of original tunes since 1982's It's Hard. The album will be their first without both drummer Keith Moon, who succumbed to an accidental drug overdose in 1978 and was replaced by Kenney Jones on It's Hard, and bassist John Entwistle, who died of a cocaine-fueled heart attack in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2002.

Pete Townshend says he's preparing a DVD of song ideas and other materials to give to Roger Daltrey in order to prove to the singer that he is still enthusiastic about recording a new CD. "[The album] will be finished -- as long as we stay healthy," promises the guitarist. With regard to the Who's upcoming Live 8 set in London, Townshend quips, "It will be the only big show we do this year . . . until someone asks us to do another one."

Who guitarist calls embattled pop star "something of an angel"

While gearing up to play his first Who concert in nearly a year at the London edition of Live 8, Pete Townshend weighed in on the verdict of Michael Jackson's child molestation trial. "I was pleased Michael was cleared," the sixty-year-old guitarist posted on his Web site Wednesday. "His feathers may be badly burned, and he may be damaged in other ways too, but he is something of an angel."

Townshend called Jackson's trial -- which concluded last week in the pop star being acquitted of the ten charges he faced --"absurd." He also relayed a story about how Jackson once funded a circus for a group of special-needs children, including a daughter of one of Townshend's friends. "This little girl believed she was Michael's future wife," Townshend wrote, "and he so kindly allowed her to sit next to him, as his future bride."

Townshend himself faced child pornography charges in 2003. He admitted accessing illicit photos while doing research for a memoir that would document his own abuse as a child. After a four-month investigation, the charges were dropped, but Townshend's name was placed on the National Sex Offenders register for five years.

"I intend to work my way back to normality," he told Rolling Stone at the time.

Since then, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has been at work on an autobiography, a solo music project and the tentatively titled Who2, the first Who album in twenty-three years. For the July 2nd Live 8 show, the Who will perform along with U2, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Elton John, Sting, Coldplay and a reunited Pink Floyd at London's Hyde Park.

FIRE IN PETE TOWNSHEND'S HISTORIC MANSION

THE WHO rocker PETE TOWNSHEND was left shaken yesterday (04JUL05) when a fire raged through his historic $5.3 million (GBP3 million) London mansion.

The luxurious home - once owned by poet LORD ALFRED TENNYSON - is the home of the PINBALL WIZARD guitarist's estranged wife KAREN, but she was holidaying in Italy when the blaze broke out.

The flames ravaged the period, destroying irreplaceable antique fittings and priceless furniture in addition to demolishing the roof and the entire third floor.

Townshend says, "It's a great shame the fire damaged the place. Tennyson used to live there but not during his happiest times. My wife was in the process of having it redeveloped."

It was a weekend of guest appearances this year at T in the Park with the biggest surprise being Pete Townshend taking the stage.

The Who guitarist stepped up to the plate to play for girlfriend Rachel Fuller after her guitarist was forced to pull out at the last minute. Fuller told The Sun: “Our guitarist called off so we’ve had to call in this old man instead.”
