Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb Together Again

Superstars Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb have announced they have started writing and producing for a yet to be titled project, scheduled for release later this year to mark the 25th anniversary of their 'Guilty' collaboration from 1980.

'Guilty' was one of Barbra Streisand's most successful album ever, selling more than 5 million copies. It ties with her "Greatest Hits Vol. 2," "A Christmas Album" and "Memories".

Gibb composed the nine songs on 'Guilty' and recorded the duets 'Guilty' and 'What Kind of Fool' for the album. It earned the pair the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal, Duo or Group.

The new album will feature a dozen songs. Gibb and Streisand will record the album in Miami, Florida and at Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, California. The Sony studio was renamed The Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage last year.

The new album is expected to be released in September.

Bee Gees Plotting Tribute CD, Concert, Musical

In the wake of the sudden death of the Bee Gees' Maurice Gibb in 2003, his brothers Robin and Barry decided to cease performing under the group's name. But Robin has taken it upon himself to turn grief into rejoicing with an extensive plan to keep Maurice's memory and the Bee Gees' music alive.

The artist's co-manager John Campbell tells Billboard a slate of Bee Gees events will begin rolling out next year. In the works are a Maurice Gibb tribute album, a free summer concert in Central Park, a prime-time special, a Broadway musical, a film and a book.

The timing could not be better, as the rights to the Bee Gees' entire catalog will revert back to them from Universal in 2006. "It is one of the most successful catalogs of all time," Campbell notes.

The tribute album, which is being produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, is especially close to Robin's heart. "We've asked artists of every generation to express our songs in their own way," Gibb says. So far, Paul McCartney, Wyclef Jean, Jagged Edge, Rascal Flatts, Snoop Dogg and, as previously reported, Sheryl Crow are working on tracks. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the album will go to charity.

"I'm a major Bee Gees fan," Edmonds says. "They are great songs; we just re-did them and flipped them a little bit."

Gibb and his team are in negotiations to find a label to release the tribute album next year, with EMI and Universal Music Group currently in the running. Gibb consciously chose to start recording without signing a deal. "We wanted to make the album without external pressure from a label," he says.

Along with the album, an outdoor tribute concert is tentatively scheduled for July Fourth weekend in 2007 in New York's Central Park. Steve Sterling, senior VP of Clear Channel Entertainment Television, says the tribute concert is a multimedia project that includes a network broadcast, a live DVD and a four- to six-episode "making of" series featuring tribute artists in the recording studio.

The Bee Gees stage musical, named after their song "You Win Again," is being modeled on hit shows like ABBA's "Mama Mia!" and Queen's "We Will Rock You." It goes into preproduction in the fall, and will debut on Broadway and London's West End toward the end of next year.

Campbell says the story, written by Maurice and Sidney Greenberg, centers on a fashion designer and the model he falls in love with, and is, of course, all set to Bee Gees hits. Numerous labels are said to be interested in releasing the soundtrack.

A brand new generation may also get to discover "Saturday Night Fever." Industry sources say advanced talks are continuing with a major film studio to invest $30 million into a remake. A Bee Gees book is also being discussed. Campbell declined to comment on the film and book deals.

Barry Gibb has given his blessing on all these projects, but is on the sidelines for now. "We've worked together all our lives," Robin says. "We need some emotional space."

Liz to team up with Bee Gee

Former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon is teaming up with Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb for a duet.

The pair are set to record a new version of the Barbra Streisand song Woman In Love.

Liz says she was daunted at the prospect of working with the Bee Gee.

According to Contactmusic.com she said: "Somebody suggested it to me and I talked to Robin about it.

"He totally fell in love with the idea. He didn't need any persuading to do it.

"No one has covered it since it was a hit. Robin is completely happy with it. But I'm really nervous about it."

BARRY & ROBIN GIBB AT ODDS OVER FUTURE BEE GEES PROJECTS

For the second time in recent months, the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb has used his new barrygibb.com website to refute claims that he and brother Robin Gibb will be working on further projects together. The trouble first started last year when Robin began putting plans in motion for a memorial concert for their brother Maurice, who died suddenly of heart failure in 2003 after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery at age 53.

When Barry pulled his participation from the project, Robin was reportedly forced to follow suit and the plans for the show were quickly put on ice. Robin issued a statement at the time saying that he and Barry had decided that the time wasn't right for a memorial just yet. Yet late last month, Robin told Billboard that the concert is once again back on.

Several days later Barry addressed the issue during his second on line chat writing that, quote, "I would love to do a tribute to Maurice. I think that would be a wonderful thing. Right now me and Robin don't seem to be able to agree on how that is done yet." Barry added that, "Maybe all you guys could suggest the ideal way to pay tribute to 'Mo" and have it done the way the fans would like it would be my wish."

Previously, Robin has gone on record since stating that the surviving Bee Gees are working on an upcoming West End musical based on their lives -- during Barry's first online chat with fans, he stated that he had no knowledge of such project.

During that same chat, he expressed his disappointment in Robin performing Bee Gees songs that he hadn't originally sung with the group.

Barry Gibb is currently putting the finishing touches on Barbra Streisand's still-unnamed new CD due out on September 25th.

Sir Paul hands out Bee Gee degree

Bee Gee Robin Gibb has been given a "rock and roll" diploma by Sir Paul McCartney at the former Beatle's fame school in Liverpool.

Sir Paul opened Lipa in the grounds of his old school in 1996.

Manchester-raised Gibb formed the band with his brothers and has sold 64 million albums to date.

Songwriter Guy Chambers, Ash frontman Tim Wheeler and actor Alec McCowen also received companionships.

Mark Featherstone-Witty, Lipa's founding principal and chief executive, said: "Around 30 successful showbusiness people have shared their lives and skills with students this year from Dawn French to Richard Wilson.

"We would want to honour them all, but the degree ceremony can really only cope with four."

Streisand, Gibb Re-Team For New Album

As first reported in February, Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb have re-teamed for a collaborative album in the vein of their 1980 smash hit, "Guilty." Due Sept. 20 via Columbia in DualDisc form, the new "Guilty Pleasures" will be led by the Streisand/Gibb duets "Come Tomorrow" and "Above the Law."

Other tracks that made the cut include "Hideaway," "Night of My Life," "Without Your Love (Along the Way)" and "Golden Dawn." The album was recorded at Gibb's studio in Miami and at Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, Calif.

Behind-the-scenes footage of Streisand and Gibb working on the new project will be found on the DVD side of the DualDisc, as well as performances of "Stranger in a Strange Land," "Above the Law," "Hideaway" and a piano version of "Letting Go."

Like its predecessor, "Guilty Pleasures" finds Streisand performing material penned for her by Gibb. It's her first studio album of new songs since 1999's "A Love Like Ours."

"Guilty" remains a landmark of adult contemporary pop music, as well as one of Streisand's best-selling albums. The set spawned three top 10 hits on Billboard's pop singles chart: "Woman in Love" (No. 1), "Guilty" (No. 3) and "What Kind of Fool" (No. 10). The title track also won a Grammy for best pop vocal performance, duo or group.
