(Jaguar and Thunderbird, Fooled Again, Luna, The Wild One Forever, Dog On The Run).

Cash, Petty’s new releases serve up rustic Americana

By Oliver Mosier
September 14, 2006 in Voices

Tom Petty’s latest solo release, Highway Companion, attempts to firmly place the artist in the sound of Americana. Petty constantly evokes nostalgia, a cornerstone of the American musical experience. Images of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper out on the open road immediately come to mind. Petty sings one for the road.

The tenor of the record increases as the tracks roll on. Highway Companion starts off rather calmly, only to be met with unadulterated rock on songs like “Flirting with Time” and “Big Weekend.” On the record, Petty returns to what he knows—real American rock ’n’ roll. The record is neither particularly innovative nor in any way groundbreaking. However, Highway Companion does not profess to possess those rarely found musical qualities. It is Full Moon Fever for the 21st century.

While driving is closely tied to Petty’s music, Petty seems equally connected to backyard barbeques and beers with the guys. At Bonnaroo (see related article in this issue), Tennessee’s music festival in June, Petty and the Heartbreakers showcased much of Highway Companion. In many ways, Petty is a seasonal musician. His music exists in a perpetual summer, where the sun never sets on the road and the drive never ends. The only way I can imagine enjoying his music during the winter would be to pretend it’s July. When you’re driving along Lake Shore Drive on a typical cold winter night, and “Free Fallin’” or “Refugee” comes on the radio, there are only two appropriate actions: windows down, volume up.

The album fulfills the artist’s intentions and is exactly what it purports to be: a musical companion to the open road. No stranger to road trip anthems, Petty is knee-deep in his musical strengths. Highway Companion is a solid album from an unbelievably consistent artist who has shied away from the ambitious in favor of the traditional.

One of Tom Petty’s musical heroes, country legend Johnny Cash, died at age 71 in 2003. Cash represented the archetypal American storyteller. With a unique voice, ever-present humor, and lyrical depth, Cash was more Mark Twain than Hank Williams. Cash transcended the norms and conventions of the country music genre, and there is a large group of people who love Cash but have no connection to the genre as a whole. In 2002 he released American IV: The Man Comes Around, an album many thought would be his last. He reworked Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” with remarkable success. Heralded as the beautiful and final chapter in Cash’s long recording career, American IV was met with a bittersweet response. The end is a difficult thing to deal with, and no one knew this more than Cash himself.

Under supervision of Rick Rubin, Cash’s American series producer, the summer of 2006 saw the release of American V: A Hundred Highways, which was recorded in 2002 and 2003 just prior to Cash’s death. The songs take on a newfound gravity with the realization that the Man in Black is finally gone.

The liner notes, penned by Rubin, explain the story behind the record. Rubin ends the notes by writing, “I hope you are as moved by Johnny’s storytelling on this collection as I am…. I love you, John.” These are truly touching words from Cash’s producer for the last decade.

Cash delivers a beautiful cover of Ian Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds.” Bob Dylan recorded the song during the legendary basement tapes sessions. Neil Young recorded it on his album Comes a Time and also played it with the Band during the Last Waltz. Cash’s version is a worthy counterpoint to these past covers.

American V is essentially the last breaths of Johnny Cash. One last gasp for air. One last “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” One last album from an artist whose career needed no introduction. He walked many highways and lived many lives and eventually conquered his demons on a way to long awaited peace. While Tom Petty’s album may be one for the road, Cash’s final record is a companion for life.

The song “Like the 309” directly addresses death. You can feel it in the studio with Cash. His entire life he sang at, to, and about death. It is fitting that in his final musical testament, Cash appears to have found peace. The last song on the album voices Cash’s final state of mind, as he sings, “I’m free from the chain gang now.”

While mortality may have been an obsession for much of Cash’s life, he appeared to have come to terms with his own imminent demise by the recording of American V. One can easily hear the pain in his voice. He accepted the inevitability of his physical and mental death. One death he could not accept was a musical one. He understood that some part of him would live forever in his music. Johnny Cash preserved his life musically despite his preoccupation with his death physically. It would be nice if Cash takes a page out of Tupac Shakur’s book and continues to release albums from the netherworld. However, with American V: A Hundred Highways, the Man in Black leaves the stage to one final standing ovation.

Highway Companion is a good, albeit traditional, record from a rock legend. Tom Petty’s first solo album since Wildflowers in 1994 contains no surprises or real depth. It is merely a visceral illustration of American rock. Johnny Cash’s posthumous American V: A Hundred Highways, on the other hand, is a beautiful and melancholy epilogue to a most brilliant career.

This little gem is one of the most under-appreciated movies of the late 1970s. It's an episodic comedy with serious undertones. The film perfectly captures the feel of the late 1970s. The casting is great, with a passionate performance by Michael Brandon and a very funny one by Martin Mull. The background music is just right and the concert appearances of Jimmy Buffett and Linda Ronstadt add to the late 1970s atmosphere. Despite what other reviews have stated, Tom Petty does NOT appear in concert, he's being interviewed at the radio station. REO Speedwagon also appears at a record store signing. If you're a fan of WKRP, then check out this movie.

Austin City Limits 2006 Austin City Limits 2006

TOM PETTY Before rain and lightning forced Petty and his band to seek shelter, the crowd heard classics like "Free Fallin', " "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and a rendition of the Traveling Wilburys' , "Handle Me With Care." Some fans left, ignoring announcements that Petty would play again. (Didn't they hear it rains for just 20 minutes in Austin?) But the band soon returned with the Chuck Berry classic "Too Much Monkey Business," followed by "Runnin Down a Dream." The lyrics were perfect: "The last three days the rain was unstoppable/It was always cold, no sunshine."

8/30/06 - Tom Petty in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
By Doug Miller / TomPetty.com

When the two main men behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum got an invitation to visit Tom Petty and check out all the musical mementos the rock legend has stockpiled over the years, they didn’t quite know what to expect.

Rock Hall curator Howard Kramer and vice president of education Warren Zanes said they figured they’d maybe walk away from Petty’s manager’s office with a few guitars, possibly a lyric sheet or two, and call it a big success.

Then Petty upped the ante a bit.

The rock legend, who’s celebrating his 30-year anniversary in rock with a new solo album, Highway Companion, and a tour with the Heartbreakers, invited the pair out to his Malibu, Calif., ranch, opened up the closets and let them take some history home with them.

"Tom didn’t say, ‘You can’t have that’ about anything," Zanes said. "It was like being a kid in a candy shop -- capital K, capital C and S. When Tom opens his door, he’s very generous."

That generosity paid off at the Rock Hall, which put all of Petty’s gifts on display in the prominent Ahmet Ertegun Exhibition Hall and called the exhibit "Tom Petty: Thirty Years of Rock and Roll."

The exhibit, which opened June 30, will run into 2007 and has unearthed Petty artifacts that Kramer and Zanes never expected.

"Our plate was already full, but we made more room on the plate for it," Kramer said. "Tom had an incredible amount of stuff."

The first things you notice when you walk into the exhibit are the guitars and the very recognizable wardrobe items.

There’s the 1968 Gibson Dove acoustic guitar that Petty wrote almost all of his hits on, which Kramer lovingly refers to as "the guitar within Petty lore."

There’s the electric Rickenbacker guitar from the cover of Petty and the Heartbreakers’ smash 1979 album Damn The Torpedoes and the "Wildflower" Fender Telecaster that Petty had signed on the back by one of his idols, Carl Perkins.

And since Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted to the Hall in 2002 as a group, the exhibit includes other instruments from the band’s colorful history, including late bassist Howie Epstein’s 1961 Fender Jazz bass and original drummer Stan Lynch’s logo drumhead.

But there’s also a truckload of clothing made famous on stage and in Petty’s unmistakable music videos.

Around one corner is the floral print shirt Petty wore in the "Free Fallin’" video, and then there’s the grey double-breasted jacket he wore as a member of the Traveling Wilburys.

"He literally pulled all this stuff out of storage and just said, ‘Here, you can take all of this,’" Kramer said.

It didn’t end there. Guitarist Mike Campbell donated well-worn boots and a jacket and bassist Ron Blair kicked in a jacket.

And the trademark "Alice In Wonderland"-style hat Petty wore in the trippy "Don’t Come Around Here No More" video? That sits by itself in a display case, not even needing the explanatory placard.

"That video really registers with people," Kramer said. "It was such a departure from what he had done before. It was groundbreaking."

That’s the general feeling Kramer and Zanes came away with about all of the Petty artifacts they were lucky enough to take back to Cleveland -- especially the lyric sheets and other assorted documents.

"I was in his living room taking pieces of clothing and he and (Petty’s wife) Dana came back with a bag," Kramer said. "It was a 10-inch stack of legal pads and spiral bound notebooks. It’s handwritten lyrics, set lists, phone numbers, grocery lists, little notes to himself ...

"It’s all there and it blew our minds. I said, ‘It’s my summer project.’"

That project, while still in full swing, has put some truly unique items into the current exhibit.

The funniest piece might be the Shelter Records statement with a cover later dated July 29, 1975, that said Petty and his seminal band Mudcrutch owed exactly $102,123.38 to the record company because their record sales in 1975 totaled $8.70.

There’s also the proposed cover art from the 1989 solo album Songs From The Garage, which shows Petty kicking back with a plethora of musical instruments in Campbell’s real-life garage. That album title was dumped, of course, in favor of the hit-laden Full Moon Fever.

And then there’s the wall chart for the production schedule of Petty’s second solo effort, 1994’s double album Wildflowers, with unique instructions such as the cryptically hilarious, "F*** that s*** up!"

"Another thing Tom showed us was a 1999 fax to him and his wife from George Harrison saying ‘Happy New Year and thanks for your friendship,’" Kramer said. "But the best part of it was that he ended the note by writing, ‘So when are we finally going to get the Wilburys on the road?’ That was very special."

So are the original lyric sheets, which show crossed-out words, jettisoned verses and a rare look into the mind of one of America’s most respected songwriters.

Featured in the exhibit are an early draft of the 1993 hit "Mary Jane’s Last Dance" without the chorus, 1978’s "No Second Thoughts," and "Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)" from Damn The Torpedoes. In addition, there are a slew of Petty standards: "Refugee," "You Got Lucky," "The Waiting," "Learning To Fly," "Into The Great Wide Open" and "Walls (Circus)."

"We made a point of putting out working versions because it’s great to see the thought process of songwriting," Kramer said. "I think it gives the viewer a real insight into what Tom might have been thinking."

And just when you think it can’t get any better or deeper, there’s still more to the exhibit.

Petty donated a photo of himself from when he was 2 years old and his baby book from 1950, his year of birth.

"Thomas Earl Petty," it reads. "5 lbs., 1 ¼ oz., 18 ¾ inches. Hair: light. Eyes: blue."

All in all, Kramer said it’s been a labor of love to put together the exhibit and put Petty in his rightful place in the Hall alongside his Wilburys buddies Bob Dylan, Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne, who co-produced Highway Companion.

"It was an extraordinary experience all the way through," Kramer said. "I’ll tell my grandkids about it."
