Mystic Eyes? Ее, насколько я помню, на "Highway Companion" нет. Мне в ней (в Mystic Eyes) нравятся вкрапления из "House In The Woods".

Petty, Pearl Jam find common ground
Concert's appeal crosses generational barriers
BY ROB HUBBARD
Pioneer Press

CONCERT REVIEW

Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder called it "the first night of the experiment," and it was indeed an eye-catching idea for a little three-city concert tour: Pairing a '70s-vintage staple of the "classic rock" stations, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, with a grunge-era survivor like Pearl Jam, one of the first bands to put "alternative rock" atop the pop charts in the early '90s.

But what could have been a mismatch in both artists and audiences instead proved a good fit at St. Paul's sold-out Xcel Energy Center on Monday night, the first of two evenings at the arena.

Playing host to an intergenerational mix — including more than a few father-son outings — it was a show that made an argument for the Petty and Pearl Jam aesthetics having a lot more in common than the compartmentalizing music industry would have you believe.

For both Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, and Pearl Jam love a good guitar riff and atmospheric arrangements.

And Monday's show was heavy on the former, with Pearl Jam's Mike McCready and the Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell both delivering some soaring solos, Campbell's the more imaginative and energetic among them.

However, both bands are best known for their songwriting frontmen, and both Eddie Vedder and Petty were charismatic leaders.

Vedder was the energetic party monster with the dark quivering baritone, and Petty proved to be the party's amiable host.

Their styles were decidedly different, but both proved magnetic, confident performers.

After a 16-song, 80-minute set from Pearl Jam that leaned heavily upon the band's early material, Petty and company marked the band's 30th anniversary with a set that touched down throughout that span of time, opening with the Byrds-like jangle of "Listen to Her Heart," making frequent stops in the early to mid-'90s and going way back to the '60s songs of the Yardbirds and Fleetwood Mac that first inspired them.

And the roughly 16,000 listeners from the two bands' blended fan bases seemed to embrace each act with equal affection.

Marcus Amphitheater: Tom Petty and Pearl JamMarcus Amphitheater: Tom Petty and Pearl Jam

By OMC Staff Writers

Published June 29, 2006 at 5:29 a.m.
In January 1997, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers set up their equipment at San Francisco’s fabled Fillmore Auditorium and didn’t leave for nearly a month. During an epic 20-show run, the group was renamed “The Fillmore House Band.”

Nearly a decade later, Petty and his pals can lay a similar claim at the Marcus Amphitheater.

The Heartbreakers, who join forces with Pearl Jam tonight and Friday, are appearing at The Big Gig for the fifth time in six years and remain about as popular among fest fanatics as a Saz’s combo plate.

Though he is promoting a new album “Highway Companion” (in stores July 25) and has hinted that the band’s 30th anniversary trek across the continent could be its last extended tour, Petty never strays far from the formula that has served him well in recent visits.

In other words, he plays the hits.

Petty, who at 55 exudes a cool charisma on stage (sort of like your favorite uncle with the old VW van and the funny pipe collection), undoubtedly will mix in a few new songs, some rockabilly-tinged covers and maybe a chestnut or two from deep in the catalog to tide over the aficionados who follow the tour from city to city and complain about a lack of variety.

Mostly, though, he’s going to play the hits.

With three decades of radio staples behind them, Petty and the band -- which includes original members guitarist Mike Campbell (wearing dreadlocks these days), pianist Benmont Tench and bassist Ron Blair as well as drummer Steve Ferrone and sideman Scott Thurston -- are the aural equivalent of your most comfortable jeans and favorite t-shirt.

Simple songs from the early catalog -- like the set-opening “Listen to Her Heart,” “I Need to Know” and the show-closing “American Girl,” – nestle nicely among MTV-era sing-a-longs like “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin’ ,“ “Learning to Fly,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” and will demonstrate to younger fans what their baby-boomer parents have known for years: At full gallop, the Heartbreakers are as tight, cohesive and formidable a group as you’re likely to see on any stage.

Petty has always been known for inviting solid opening acts on his tours (Georgia Satellites, Del Fuegos, Lone Justice, Lenny Kravitz, Black Crowes, Bo Diddley, Trey Anastasio, the Allman Brothers, etc.) and his selection of Pearl Jam as the opener / co-headliner for these dates has made this one of the tougher tickets at the Marcus in recent memory.

PETTY TURNS BLIND EYE TO CHILI PEPPERS 'PLAGIARISM'
LATEST: Rocker TOM PETTY has vowed to turn a blind eye to allegations the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS plagiarised one of his songs. The band stood accused of lifting key aspects of their latest single DANI CALIFORNIA from Petty's MARY JANE'S LAST DANCE, most publicly by US DJ DAN GAFFNEY who said, "The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme… they're identical." It was rumoured the veteran singer would sue - but he insists he'd only consider a lawsuit if the track was stolen "note for note". Petty tells PageSix.com, "I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock 'n' roll songs sound alike. Ask CHUCK BERRY. THE STROKES took AMERICAN GIRL (for their song LAST NITE), and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, 'OK, good for you'. "If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe (I'd sue). But I don't believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous law suits in this country without people fighting over pop songs."

Tom Petty to Chili Peppers: We’re Cool

Forget all that stuff about Tom Petty suing the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Earlier this month the New York Post reported that the remarkable similarities between the Chili Peppers’ “Dani California” and “Last Dance With Mary Jane” could turn into a lawsuit. “Tom Petty was made aware of this and is looking into legal ramifications,” the item stated. “The Chili Peppers could be facing a huge plagiarism lawsuit.”

But Petty set the record straight himself in the July 14th issue of Rolling Stone, on newstands today. Here’s an excerpt:

RS: Have you heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Dani California” yet, because obviously it sounds a lot like “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”

Petty: Yes, I have. Everyone everywhere is stopping me. The truth is, I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took “American Girl” [for their song “Last Nite”], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, “OK, good for you.” It doesn’t bother me.

RS: There have been news reports that you were going to sue the Chili Peppers.

Petty: If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe. But I don’t believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous lawsuits in this country without people fighting over pop songs.

Rock Hall celebrates 30 years of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
JOE MILICIA
Associated Press
CLEVELAND - It's not often a rock star opens up his bedroom closet to the world.

Tom Petty did and the results are on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which is showcasing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in an exhibit that opens Friday.

When representatives from the Rock Hall visited Petty's Spanish-style ranch in Malibu, Calif., in April looking for artifacts, he invited them into his bedroom, then into his rather sizable closet.

Petty pulled out a flowered shirt he wore in the video for his biggest chart hit "Free Fallin'" and the gray jacket he wore as a member of the esteemed Traveling Wilburys. He also produced a nylon bag of notebooks filled with handwritten lyrics.

"We left his house pinching ourselves," said Howard Kramer, Rock Hall curator.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, inducted into the Rock Hall in 2002, are a classic American band, a blue-collar act that has always stuck to the basics.

While Bruce Springsteen has become the iconic American rocker of the last few decades, Petty's laid-back, homespun style has made him and the Heartbreakers the country's house band - one with a catalog of hits that could fill a five-hour set.

"In terms of continuity, you don't have many guys like this," said Warren Zanes, the Rock Hall's vice president for education.

Zanes, whose band the Del Fuegos toured with Petty in the mid-'80s, says Petty and the Heartbreakers resonate because they play what comes to them, what feels right.

"Petty has stuck closer to the great American tradition of the garage band," Zanes said. "In doing so, he's the guy who best represents the coolest thing about rock 'n' roll."

The exhibit comes at a momentous time for Petty, who is on a 30th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers and is releasing his third solo album, "Highway Companion," on July 25. The band also will be the subject of a documentary being filmed by director Peter Bogdanovich.

Petty, 55, told The Associated Press last month that he's happy to be on the road. The band ranked in the Top 10 tours last year, according to Pollstar, a concert industry trade publication. But Petty said he may cut back on the band's touring schedule because of the many recording projects he wants to pursue.

"We're in such a nice position right now, things have gone so well," he said. "I have people approach me on the streets and say, 'Thanks for writing the soundtrack to my life.' I can't tell you how good that makes me feel as a songwriter."

From the band's self-titled debut album in 1976, to the watershed "Damn the Torpedoes," to Petty's first solo album "Full Moon Fever," the Gainesville, Fla.-native has consistently churned out hit tunes, and groundbreaking videos.

The exhibit includes a montage of the band's videos, including the psychedelic, "Alice in Wonderland"-inspired "Don't Come Around Here No More." Petty's oversized hat from his "The Mad Hatter" role is a permanent part of the museum's collection.

Coincidentally, Petty is the fourth member of the Traveling Wilburys to get the museum's spotlight treatment this year. It opened an exhibit on Roy Orbison in April and a major exhibit exploring the early years of Bob Dylan's career in May. An exhibit on George Harrison was on display last year and will reopen this summer.
