RICHARDS: 'FEW WOULD SURVIVE MY LIFESTYLE' RICHARDS: 'FEW WOULD SURVIVE MY LIFESTYLE'

Hard-living KEITH RICHARDS refuses to recommend his hedonistic lifestyle to everyone - because only a few people would survive his history of excess.

The PAINT IT BLACK guitarist reckons his strong constitution has enabled him to consume huge amounts of alcohol and drugs and still be alive - but he realises he is an anomaly in the death-ridden world of rock music.

Richards says, "Yeah, I'd like to see the Reaper off, but people shouldn't try and do what I've done with my body, because not everybody can."

His ability to withstand pain even confounded his dentist during a recent trip where he underwent dental work without an anaesthetic.

He comments, "After a bit I hear, 'This guy's immune system is f**king unbelievable!' I chuckled to myself but I didn't say anything."

Press views: Rolling Stones tour Press views: Rolling Stones tour
Rock legends The Rolling Stones have kicked off their latest world tour at Fenway Park, Boston - getting an overwhelmingly positive reception from critics.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
The Rolling Stones will be touring the world over the next 12 months
Age can be cruel to musicians, eroding voices and stamina. But yes, the Stones can still do it.

Through decades of selling out arenas and stadiums, the Stones have remained more a band than a spectacle.

The flashpots, strobing video and inflatable lips-and-tongue logo are still only a sideshow to the physical presence of the band members, playing their instruments and romping across the stage.

THE BOSTON GLOBE
The opening night of the band's 31st global tour was marked by numerous high points, not the least of which was the guys' indefatigable passion for playing music.

Appropriately, they hit the stage with Start Me Up, as plumes of fire shot skyward from the front of the stage. Dressed in blue satin pants and a silver jacket, Jagger jumped about in all his swivel-hipped glory.

Richards, looking every bit like Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, prowled the stage, both a little oblivious to the audience and also feeding off their energy.

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
The twist this time is the much-hyped onstage seats that make fans an integral part of the Bigger Bang set design.

The Stones' new configuration turned out to be about as intimate as the view from a high-rise.

The "onstage" seating (which actually is standing - there are no seats) put several hundred fans up on a series of tall balconies that stretched up, in a spider-like shape, from the huge screen that was the stage backdrop.

Some who found themselves 40 to 60 feet above the band and watching Keith Richards from behind all night were less than thrilled.

THE TIMES
Whereas the rest of the group have mellowed in their various ways, Jagger was as tough and spiky as a cactus as he jiggled and wiggled through the opening salvo of Start Me Up and You Got Me Rocking.

In particular, his electrifying performance of Ray Charles' Night Time (Is The Right Time) underlined why he is still one of the greatest singers of the pop era.

A chunk of the stage dramatically detached itself and carried the group about 30 yards into the crowd while they played Miss You. This was the cue for a string of greatest hits.

THE NEW YORK POST
For two hours, on what's reportedly the biggest, most expensive stage ever assembled for a rock show, the legendary band, known for excess, demonstrated how too much was just enough.

With 36,000 fans on the brink of mass hysteria, Boston's hallowed baseball field was electric from curtain to bow.

The ultimate question is: Do the Stones still have the right stuff? If the Fenway show is the tour standard, the answer is absolutely.

B.B. KING SAYS THE ROLLING STONES, OTHERS HELPED EXPOSE THE BLUESB.B. KING SAYS THE ROLLING STONES, OTHERS HELPED EXPOSE THE BLUES

B.B. King says that having the Rolling Stones back on the road is good news for the blues. The veteran bluesman has worked often with the Stones, who cite him as one of their influences. King told us that artists such as the Stones, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, and others have been important in helping to expose the blues to different audiences: "We had groups like the Rolling Stones... many of the British groups introduced the blues to white America and that was a big plus for us... You have to give them credit. These guys were popular, and they opened the doors for many of us to be heard."

King collaborated with the Rolling Stones on a version of his "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" from his 1997 Deuces Wild album.

WOOD'S 'NO-SHOW' AT CENTRE OF LEGAL ROW

ROLLING STONE rocker RONNIE WOOD is at the centre of legal row after he failed to turn up for a gig, despite being been billed as the top act.

Wood was expected to join his former THE FACES bandmate KENNEY JONES at a concert in Deal, Kent earlier this year (05), and fans were understandably disappointed when the star failed to arrive.

A spokesman for Wood insists the START ME UP hitmaker never agreed to perform at the gig.

However, bosses of the Astor Theatre, are considering legal action against the agent involved in the booking, MIKE HOBLEY, who claims he only "hoped" Wood would be on stage.

Astor Theatre chairman JON JOHANSON (corr) says, "I was told he would be playing. We are considering options including legal action."

JAGGER FURIOUS OVER SMALL MANHOOD COMMENT

LATEST: SIR MICK JAGGER is reportedly furious with his ROLLING STONES bandmate KEITH RICHARDS after he publicly claimed the singer has a small penis.

The iconic rocker's romances with a string of international beauties, including models SOPHIE DAHL and JERRY HALL, have earned him a reputation as a legendary lover.

But last week (ends21AUG05), Richards said of Jagger, "Huge balls, small c**k."

On hearing the news, Jagger reportedly stormed over to Richard's room in Boston's Four Seasons Hotel before Sunday's (21AUG05) opening world tour gig to vent his rage at the guitarist.

A backstage source tells British newspaper The Sun, "He practically ran over to Keith's suite and had a stand-up argument. Mick was offended and took the remarks personally.

"Keith just found it really funny. Mick went off in a huff and refused to come out of his room.

"By the time they arrived at the venue the atmosphere backstage was horrible."
