George Harrison's family may have filed a false address on his death certificate because of a typing error.
Police have confirmed they are looking into a complaint that the address is a fake one.
The Los Angeles District Attorney says there could be a prosecution if a crime has been committed.
A spokeswoman said the investigation might take some time but anyone charged and found guilty of falsifying a public document could face up to three years in prison.
She said: "It may be that this is a typing error.
"That is being investigated. Who filed the certificate is also being investigated."
Harrison was recorded as having died at 1971 Coldwater Canyon in Beverly Hills, but the United States Post Office revealed the address does not exist.
Los Angeles lawyer Gloria Allred has filed a formal complaint.
She believes it was an attempt to prevent the real location of his death becoming a shrine to his fans.
"Celebrities and or their supporters are not above the law, even if they are acting with good intentions," said Ms Allred.
