KING: We're back with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. His famous book of years ago "Science of Being and Art of Living: Transcendental meditation." He's the founder of transcendental meditation.

There has been a new release and a newly revised version of that historic book. Everyone got to know the Maharishi when the Beatles went to visit him. I, by the way, I send the best to you from Paul McCartney who I saw last week and I told him I was going to be with you and he wanted to wish you the best.

We know that your good friends, George Harrison and John Lennon, are gone. What do you believe happens upon death?

YOGI: Death is just a -- it gives a new start for a new journey. In the process of evolution the body lasts for some time and then will take other body and take other body and take other body. Until the final redemption from diversity is transcended.

The totality is found. They say the potential of life, cosmic potential of life, immortality in its field of counting it in terms of time. Immortality.

'Beatles are angels on earth,' said Maharishi

The souring of relations between the Beatles and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has always been amystery for the world. There was a reconciliatory meeting between Maharishi and George Harrison, and TOI's Guest Editor on Monday Deepak Chopra was the only other person present there.

In September 1991, Harrison asked Chopra to set up a meeting with Maharishi, which he did. 'We got on to a chartered plane, which had just dropped off Paul McCartney to Monte Carlo. George wrote a note to Paul, saying, 'Guess whom we're going to meet', and signed it 'Jai Gurudev'. Then we flew to Vlodrop, in the Netherlands, where Maharishi was staying.'

It was an emotional meeting. As Chopra tells it, Harrison first presented Maharishi a rose. This was followed by a long silence. Then Maharishi asked, 'How have you been?' George replied, 'Some good things (have happened), some bad things.'

Then he added, 'You must know about John being assassinated.' Maharishi replied, 'I was very sorry to hear about it.' After some time, Harrison spoke. 'I came to apologise,' he said. 'For what?' asked Maharishi. 'You know for what,' replied Harrison.

'Tell Deepak the real story,' said Maharishi. Harrison said, 'I don't know about it 100%, but here's what I know transpired.' And he narrated the incident about the Beatles being asked to leave.

Did Maharishi harbour any bitterness towards the Beatles? Chopra smiled. 'Part of the Beatles lore is that when they made their first appearance on American TV, on the Ed Sullivan show, there was no crime in the US for that one hour.

Maharishi told us, 'When I heard this, I knew the Beatles were angels on earth. It doesn't matter what John said or did, I could never be upset with angels'. On hearing that, George broke down and wept.'

There was another long silence. Then Harrison told Maharishi, 'I love you' and Maharishi responded, 'I love you too.' The two left, and Harrison later phoned Chopra and told him, 'A huge karmic baggage has been lifted from me, because I didn't want to lie.'

CHOPRA REVEALS THE TRUTH BEHIND BEATLESMAHARISHI SPLIT

Writer and thinker DEEPAK CHOPRA has exploded the myth that his friend MAHARISHI MAHESH YOGI fell out with THE BEATLES over a secret romance by insisting the Indian guru simply grew tired of the Fab Four's drug use. Neither The Beatles nor the Maharishi have spoken about their bitter falling out, leading many to speculate about the reasons for the bust-up.
Some of those close to both The Beatles and the Maharishi have claimed the guru propositioned a friend of the group - possibly actress MIA FARROW - prompting JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON to leave India and cease communications with their former spiritual advisor. But Chopra now insists the Maharishi simply "lost his temper when he learned they were doing drugs". Chopra adds, "The rumour was that Maharishi had misbehaved with Mia Farrow, but I met Mia years later at the airport while taking a flight to India, and she asked me to tell Maharishi that she still loved him." Meanwhile, during his guest editor stint for the Times of India newspaper on Tuesday (14FEB06), Chopra also revealed he helped set up a top secret reconciliatory meeting between the Maharishi and Harrison in 1991. He recalls, "We got on to a chartered plane... and flew to Vlodrop in the Netherlands, where Maharishi was staying."

Chopra recalls it was an emotional meeting, during which Harrison apologised to the Maharishi for severing ties with him.

The Maharishi brought Harrison to tears, according to Chopra, when he forgave his former student, stating, "I knew the Beatles were angels on earth... I could never be upset with angels."
