PAUL McCartney is planning to release an album as soon as his bitter divorce from Heather Mills is over.

Friends say the former Beatle is desperate to be known for his music again, not his stormy private life, and has been writing songs since the couple’s acrimonious split

“The album is scheduled for seven or eight weeks’ time, it’s imminent,” said a source close to McCartney’s company MPL.

“It’s a rock album. But he knows that just because he might win a court case, it doesn’t necessarily mean fans will buy his album.

“It’s almost like starting out again for him. He lost touch with his core fans when he married Heather and he wants to reconnect.”

Another McCartney aide said: “We’ve been told to stand by for an album. He has been working on it for some time and it will be the first of two projects, the second being a guitar concerto.”

McCartney appears to be winning the High Court battle raging in London.

Lawyers have been challenging Mills, 39, over a catalogue of claims they say are fraudulent as McCartney fights to keep his reported £835million fortune.

But he is just as concerned at the damage the marriage has done to his reputation as Britain’s biggest rock star.

“Before he met her, he was the chairman of the board of rock’n’roll,” said the source.

“Now he’s more like the chairman of Grace Brothers. He’s old Mr Grace. People love Paul because he’s a national icon but the national icon has been made to look a fool.

“While married to Heather, Paul became stand-offish with the public and the media. He was phoning to harangue journalists about their treatment of his wife. He would never do that before.”

McCartney, 64, is said to be particularly riled by his tabloid image. He feels that having always been a rock star, recent events have relegated him to being a celebrity.

“Prior to this, he was always ‘Paul McCartney, the former Beatle’,” says one friend. “Now it’s ‘Paul McCartney, the husband of Heather Mills’.

"This marriage has made him a celebrity and he was never a celebrity, he was a star, a rock star at that. He absolutely hates being a celebrity, he used to use the term as a swear word.

“The fact he and Heather have superseded the Beckhams is probably the worst thing that’s ever happened to him with fame.”

Colleagues are talking about a series of intimate gigs to relaunch McCartney, or even an impromptu tour in the style of his 1970s band, Wings, who turned up unannounced at universities, asking to play.

Sir Paul has always been keen on intimate gigs as a way of directly reaching fans.

After The Beatles gave up live performances in 1966, he suggested they turn up at pubs to play and has repeatedly planned smaller shows over the years. His daughter, fashion designer Stella, 35, has been helping him plan his post-divorce future and has taken an active role in his business affairs over the past few months.

“It’s true, Stella has been running the show,” said the source. “She’s making decisions, backing Paul up on a lot.

“She’s his main ally and of all his children, the one most like him. She took the marriage personally, she hated it from day one, everyone who was at the wedding will tell you that, she wasn’t smiling. Stella’s a good girl, she has the same honesty and work ethics as her father. She understands the responsibility of being a McCartney.”

Ms Mills is expected to walk away with around £30million. The judge will “ring fence” Sir Paul’s fortune gained prior to their 2000 marriage but his earnings during their four years together included significant income from three tours. His 2002-3 tour reportedly grossed £63million.

EXCLUSIVE: TRAVELING WILBURYS REBORN WITH RHINO

After being out of print for more than a decade, the two studio albums from all-star band the Traveling Wilburys will return to the marketplace in a variety of formats June 12 via Wilbury Records/Rhino, Billboard.com has learned.

"Traveling Wilburys Volume 1" and "Traveling Wilburys Volume 3" will be available together in one package with bonus tracks and a DVD of rare footage, as a deluxe linen-bound edition, a vinyl set and a digital bundle. The DVD boasts a 24-minute documentary and five music videos.

The Wilburys formed in 1988 after Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison assembled at a California studio to record a B-side for the Harrison single "This Is Love."

The resulting song, "Handle With Care," was instead released under the Wilburys name, with the artists posing as a band of brothers. It went on to reach No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the "Volume 1" album hit No. 3 on The Billboard 200. The reissued version of the album includes the previously unreleased tracks "Maxine" and "Like a Ship."

Orbison died in late 1988 before a second album could be completed; it was eventually released as "Volume 3" in 1990. The set is expanded here with the B-side "Runaway" and "Nobody's Child," which was released on a benefit album for Romanian orphans.

Reportedly the first single from McCartney's "Memory Almost Full" will be the first song on the album called "Dancing Tonight."

There is a video to accompany the song which includes a Paul "lookalike." The video was directed by Michel Gondry and stars Mackenzie Crook, Natalie Portman and Macca impersonator Neil Tudor.

Paul McCartney's "Mull of Kintyre" may have sold more than two million copies in the UK, but the video was on the bland side. So I'm pleased to hear that Macca has put a bit more effort into the visuals for his next album, entitled "Memory Almost Full," expected to be released in June.

"Paul has just finished filming the video, which stars Natalie Portman and The Office star Mackenzie Crook,'' I'm told.

"Macca's always been a huge fan of Natalie's, but he recently met her through his daughter, Stella, who makes the 'vegetarian' shoes that Natalie likes to wear, and asked her if she'd like to work on the project. She and Mackenzie are quite an odd combination, but the end result looks fantastic: it involves Paul being visited by various ghoulish figures.''

Memory Almost Full out Monday June 4th 2007

I actually started this album, Memory Almost Full, before my last album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (released September 2005). The first recording session was back in the autumn of 2003 at Abbey Road with my touring band and producer David Kahne. I was right in the middle of it when I began talking with Nigel Godrich about a brand new project (which became Chaos And Creation In The Backyard).

When I was just finishing up everything concerned with Chaos and had just got the Grammy nominations (2006) I realised I had this album to go back to and finish off. So I got it out to listen to it again, wondering if I would enjoy it, but actually I really loved it. All I did at first was just listen to a couple of things and then I began to think, ‘OK, I like that track – now, what is wrong with it?’ And it might be something like a drum sound, so then I would re-drum and see where we would get to.

I took it from there and built it up. I went through, track by track, making changes as I went along. I fixed things I wasn’t too keen on and it just evolved from there. Without me knowing, or really trying, it started to get its own theme, a sort of thread that holds it all together. So I suppose it’s about half new stuff and half old stuff from 2003.

In places it’s a very personal record and a lot of it is retrospective, drawing from memory, like memories from being a kid, from Liverpool and from summers gone. The album is evocative, emotional, rocking, but I can’t really sum it up in one sentence.

There is a medley of 5 songs towards the end and that was purposefully retrospective. I thought this might be because I’m at this point in my life, but then I think about the times I was writing with John and a lot of that was also looking back. It’s like me with ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘Eleanor Rigby’ - I’m still up to the same tricks!
I know people are going to look at some of the songs and interpret them in different ways but this has always been the case. The thing is that I love writing songs, so I just write and write. I never really get to a point where I start thinking I’m going to write about specific subjects. Inevitably though, what I am thinking is going to find its way into what I’m doing.

The opening track of the album is ‘Dance Tonight’. I recently got myself a mandolin and I was just playing about with it and came up with the basis of this track. A couple of weeks ago we made the video, which was great fun. It’s directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) and stars Natalie Portman and Mackenzie Crook. I’m not going to give the plot away. You’ll have to go and watch it for yourself, but we had a good time doing it.

The album title came after I had finished everything. For me, that’s when they normally come, with the exception of maybe Sgt. Peppers, otherwise I don’t think I have ever made an album with The Beatles, Wings or solo where I have thought of a title and a concept. I was thinking about what would sum the whole thing up and ‘Memory Almost Full’ sprung to mind. It’s a phrase that seemed to embrace modern life; in modern life our brains can get a bit overloaded. I realised I had also seen it come up on my phone a few times. When I started bouncing the idea round with some friends they nearly all got different meanings out of it, but they all said they loved it. So the feedback helped solidify the title.

After completing the album I then started thinking about the album artwork and how I’d want it to look. I really wanted to make the CD a desirable object. Something that I know I’d want to pick up from the shelf, something that would make people curious. I hope our final concept has done that. The album sleeve itself includes an etching by a friend of mine, Humphrey Ocean. As with the album lyrics, I’m looking forward to seeing how people might interpret the artwork.

Currently I’m just starting out on the promo trail and beginning to get the first bits of feedback about the album and so far so good! It’s interesting now as I’m getting to hear what other people are making of the songs and what their feelings are. I’m also talking about the album myself and I’m really enjoying the discovery process.

I really enjoyed making this album with David Kahne and I’m proud of all the songs. We had a great time. I hope that the fun we had will communicate itself to the people who are going to listen to it.
