The Comets Rock for NASA Scientists Tue Jul 5, 9:23 PM ET

PASADENA, Calif. - A day after NASA scientists blasted a hole in a comet, The Comets struck back. Five surviving members of the rock 'n' roll band Bill Haley & The Comets paid tribute to the space agency's Deep Impact team by hosting an outdoor concert at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Tuesday.

The Comets — Johnny Grande, Marshall Lytle, Dick Richards, Joey Ambrose and Franny Beecher — performed several of their greatest hits including "Shake, Rattle and Roll," "See You Later Alligator" and "Rock Around The Clock" during an hourlong concert.

About 400 scientists and engineers — including dozens of Deep Impact members who spent a sleepless Fourth of July weekend on the project — danced along to the music.

The band offered to perform for free after learning about the $333 million mission to send a space probe to collide with a comet 83 million miles from Earth.

The goal of the Deep Impact mission was to smash a crater in comet Tempel 1 to study the pristine material in its core. Comets are considered remnants of the early solar system and studying them could provide insight into how the sun and planets formed 4.5 billion years ago.

Scotland's Simple Minds has a new record. After three years, Simple Minds will return with 'Black and White 050505'.

The new album was recorded in Italy and Holland and then mixed in LA by Bob Clearmountain.

Jim Kerr said in a statement "We wanted to make an album once again that was full of dramatic and atmospheric pop music. We felt that we needed an album that proved as much to ourselves as anyone else, that the big beating heart of Simple Minds was very much alive and driving us on once again. Having delivered 'Black and White 050505,' an album that we believe is 'classic Simple Minds,' albeit with a whole new energy. We can honestly say that we are delighted with the results and look forward with a totally revitalised outlook to this next phase of our on going creativity. We feel with some certainty that people who grew up with Simple Minds will share our enthusiasm for this new work. While at the same time, given the chance, we also feel that these new songs are good enough to interest a whole new contemporary audience. Needless to say, in the tradition of all great rock bands, we are extremely excited at the prospect of playing this album live on stage and look forward to doing exactly that in the near future."

The track 'Home' will be the first single from the album. Kerr says "There are a number of songs on the album that will make great singles but I feel that the way 'Home' kicks in with Charlie's signature soaring guitar riff, there could be no better way off announcing to the world that Simple Minds had recaptured the kind of uplifting musical spirit that defined our best work. Lyrically, 'Home' is a pop song with a spiritual heart, taking us on a secret journey through the thoughts of someone who is desperately seeking out their own inner crusade."

Black and White 050505 will be released in September.

Lil Kim Given Jail Term

Rapper Lil Kim will spend the next 12 months behind bars.

The singer was found guilty on charges of perjury after confessing that she lied before a grand jury just minutes before she was due to be sentenced.

It all came too late. The judge had already decided that the rapper would take the rap and gave her a prison sentence of one year, one day plus a $50,000 fine and three years probation on charges of perjury and conspiracy.

Lil Kim was protecting friends following a shooting in 2001 outside a New York radio station.

The judge heard how she lied 29 times over three court appearances relating to the shooting. She told the court that her manager was not at the radio station when he was and denied knowing a man named Jackson who was her former bodyguard.

In a statement following the hearing Kim said "I would like to thank all of my supporters who have stood by my side throughout this entire ordeal," said Lil' Kim in a statement released shortly after she was sentenced. "The many prayers and hundreds of letters of support, e-mails and kind words that have poured in have been overwhelming and critical in helping my family."

France Honors Punk Rocker Patti Smith Sun Jul 10, 2:44 PM ET

PARIS - U.S. punk rocker Patti Smith received one of France's top cultural honors on Sunday.

Smith, 58, was presented with the insignia of Commander of the Order of the Arts and Letters by Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres.

The ministry, in a statement, noted Smith's appreciation for 19th century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, and praised her as "one of the most influential artists in women's rock 'n' roll."

Speaking to The Associated Press at an AIDS benefit concert in southwestern Paris, where she received the award Sunday, Smith said she accepted the award "from the most spiritual side of me."

"I have vowed to live up to this honor in my work and my conduct," she said. "I can't explain what I feel like. It has uplifted me, and I will work very hard to earn it."

In an interview published Sunday in Le Parisien Dimanche weekly, Smith said she hoped to record a new album including hits from artists like Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and late French diva Edith Piaf.

Rock Legends' Guitars Saved From Hard Rock Blaze

Guitars donated to the first Hard Rock Café in London by rock n roll legends were spectacularly saved by firemen last night (09/07/05).

Over 30 firemen fought back flames at the capital’s Hard Rock Café in a bid to rescue memorabilia donated by some of the world’s most famous axe-men. The slew of guitars and other rock memorabilia had been donated to the café after Eric Clapton started the practice when he asked staff to hang his guitar over his favourite bar stool with Pete Townshend soon following suite.

Other legends such as Beatle George Harrison and Rolling Stone Keith Richards also had donated guitars which were rescued from the fire. Unfortunately Jimi Hendrix guitar couldn’t be saved as he’d already torched it himself some thrity five years earlier.

Wal-Mart Tweaks Willie's Reggae By Sarah Hall

No, you're not smoking something--the cover of Willie Nelson's new reggae album comes in two separate versions: regular and Wal-Mart.

The cover art of Countryman, released Tuesday, features green marijuana leaves over a red and yellow background and looks similar to a large pack of rolling papers.

However, for those looking to snap up the CD at Wal-Mart's famously rolled back prices, the cover features a palm tree in place of the offending leaves, a change made by Universal Music Group Nashville out of deference to the retailing giant's strict guidelines with regards to lyrics and packaging.

"They're covering all the bases," Nelson commented to the AP.

Nelson's not the first artist to be edited by Wal-Mart. In the past, musicians have been asked to change lyrics in order to be stocked on the retailer's shelves, and Wal-Mart once refused to carry a Sheryl Crow album because it contained a song with lyrics about children killing each other with guns purchased at the store.

The retailer also pulled Prodigy's 1997 album, Fat of the Land, from shelves after deeming the lyrics to "Smack My Bitch Up" too offensive by its standards.

Despite the toned-down cover art, Wal-Mart shoppers can rest assured that the contents of Countryman remain unaltered.

The long-awaited album features reggae versions of Nelson songs including "Darkness on the Face of the Earth" and "One in a Row," as well as covers of Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" and "Sitting in Limbo."

Nelson also teamed with Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals to record "I'm a Worried Man" by Johnny and June Carter Cash.

"When he [Cash] found out I was doing a reggae album, he said, 'Hey, I've got a reggae song that I wrote when I lived there,' " Nelson told the AP. "Toots heard it and liked it."

Nelson originally started work on the album for Island Records in 1995 with producer Don Was, who's worked with the Rolling Stones and Bonnie Raitt, among other big names.

However, after Island founder Chris Blackwell left the company, the album fell to the wayside until a former Island exec landed at Nelson's current label, Lost Highway Records and revived it.

The 72-year-old country singer is currently on the road again, appearing with Bob Dylan in small venues across the country.

On Sept. 18, Nelson will reunite with fellow Farm Aid founders John Mellencamp and Neil Young in Chicago to mark the benefit concert's 20th anniversary. Dave Matthews Band is also scheduled to appear and other acts will be announced at a later date.

Over the years, the concerts have raised more than $27 million to benefit farmers.

The Band boxed set unearths three-dozen rarities

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The Band will be the subject of a six-disc boxed set that will feature 37 previously unreleased tracks, including a live collaboration with Bob Dylan on "Highway 61 Revisited."

"A Musical History" (Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing), set for release Sept. 27, will include five audio discs, a DVD featuring rare live performance footage, and a 108-page book.

The 111-song box begins with tracks the Band crafted with Ronnie Hawkins and Dylan in the early and mid-1960s, including previously unreleased "song sketches" of "Words and Numbers," "Beautiful Thing," "Caledonia Mission" and "The Stones I Throw."

Beyond such classics as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Up on Cripple Creek" and "The Weight," the late '60s/early '70s are represented with previously unreleased live versions of "Strawberry Wine," "Rockin' Chair" and "Look Out Cleveland," taped June 2, 1971, at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The latter portion of the group's career is augmented with the "Highway 61 Revisited" track (taped Jan. 31, 1974, in New York), and such rarities as a "song sketch" of "Twilight" and a live take on "Forbidden Fruit."

The DVD includes the Band's three-song, Oct. 30, 1976, performance on "Saturday Night Live," which has never been released in its entirety. Other performances were captured at Robbie Robertson's studio ("Jam"/"King Harvest (Has Surely Come)"), on the famed Festival Express tour of Canada ("Long Black Veil," "Rockin' Chair") and at London's Wembley Stadium ("The Genetic Method"/"Chest Fever").

SLY STONE OK'S COFFEE CHAIN'S TRIBUTE ALBUM

JOSS STONE, STEVEN TYLER and BUDDY GUY are among the stars paying tribute to reclusive funk pioneer SLY STONE on a new covers album.

Stone granted bosses at US coffee chain Starbucks permission to re-record classic SLY + THE FAMILY STONE tracks by the musician himself.

Starbucks released the star-studded compilation yesterday (13JUL05) - two months before Sony chiefs release an expanded version of the album, DIFFERENT STROKES.

Among the tracks covered are Stone, JOHN LEGEND and VAN HUNT revamping FAMILY AFFAIR, MAROON 5 covering EVERYDAY PEOPLE and Tyler teaming up with steel guitarist ROBERT RANDOLPH on I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER.

One track, BLACK EYED PEAS star WILL.I.AM's version of DANCE TO THE MUSIC, will also be used on the soundtrack of upcoming movie STEALTH.

No New Country Joe & The Fish

There's bad news today for fans of the 60s and Woodstock - there will not be a Country Joe and the Fish reunion.

Rumours have been surfacing about duo getting back together but lead guitarist Barry 'The Fish' Melton has stopped the rumours cold with the statement "Maybe some day, but not this summer".

Country Joe McDonald and Barry 'The Fish' Melton began working together in 1965 in San Francisco and quickly became a crucial part of the 60s hippy movement.

2005 marks their 40th anniversary but they won't get back together to celebrate. "I can see why people get confused and think there's a reunion," says Melton. "Joe's out there with musicians we've played with in the past. But none of them were part of our original band or with us at Woodstock."

Melton is also actively employed these days but considering his hippy past, fans might be surprised to learn his current occupation. He is a well-known criminal defense lawyer. As Public Defender of Yolo County, California, where he currently makes his home, Melton is the chief attorney in an office of 22 lawyers that handle some 10,000 criminal and juvenile cases per year.

COMETS RETURN WITH CLASSICS ALBUM

BILL HALEY's COMETS are planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their smash-hit ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK by recording a new album with British rock legend GRAHAM NASH.

The CROSBY, STILLS + NASH star has signed up to produce the elderly backing band's new studio album, which will feature reworked versions of the group's biggest hits and revamped covers of tracks by the BEATLES, THE WHO and BOB DYLAN.

The Comets manager, MARTIN LEWIS, who is also planning a world tour for the group, who are all in the 70s and 80s, says, "The Beatles covered three of their tunes and so they're keen to return the favour - they'll record ONE AFTER 909, which was a track on the LET IT BE album.

"They also plan to cover PETE TOWNSHEND's SQUEEZEBOX and Dylan's FOREVER YOUNG, which will be sung by the Comets' 82-yearold drummer DICK RICHARDS."

Meanwhile, Lewis is also planning a special one-off London concert with a host of stars they inspired.

Top Acts Recharge Sly & The Family Stone Classics

Janet Jackson, OutKast's Big Boi, Moby, the Roots, Maroon 5 and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am have recorded new music that has been combined with master tapes from Sly & the Family Stone to create the material on "Different Strokes by Different Folks." The set is due Sept. 27 via Epic/Legacy and is said to have been approved by Sly Stone, who has rarely been seen in public since the group's 1993 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Maroon 5 updates "Everyday People," while Will.I.Am tackles "Dance to the Music," a version that also appears on Epic's recent "Stealth" soundtrack. Janet Jackson intersperses her own "Rhythm Nation" into the immortal "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)," while Joss Stone, Van Hunt and John Legend team up for "Family Affair."

Other contributions are turned in by John Mayer with Buddy Guy, D'Angelo with Chuck D and Issac Hayes and Nappy Roots with Martin Luther.

Stone, now 61, has not released an album since 1982's "Ain't But the One Way" and was last heard from on the 1986 soundtrack to the film "Soul Man." Over the years, he has battled drug addiction and been the subject of bizarre rumors about his personal life, but is understood to now be in better health and living in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In recent years, Sly & the Family Stone -- minus Sly, but including several original members -- logged studio time in Los Angeles, some of it with engineer Tom Flye, who had worked with the Family Stone many years ago. But the project fell into limbo last fall due to scheduling conflicts. The group Family Stone Experience, featuring original drummer Greg Errico and saxophonist Jerry Martini, is on tour this summer in North America.

Ennio Morricone Gets Compiled By Ipecac

Renowned movie composer Ennio Morricone will be celebrated this fall with a new double-disc compilation, "Crime and Dissonance." Due Sept. 6 via Ipecac, the 30-track set focuses primarily on Morricone's experimental and oft-overlooked work from the early 1970s.

It turns out that the collection was originally planned for a 2002 release following 2000's "Morricone 2000" and 2001's "Morricone 2001." But when the set was shelved, Ipecac eventually stepped in and offered to give it a home.

Ipecac head (and Tomahawk/Fantomas frontman) Mike Patton tells Billboard.com he has become a great admirer of Morricone's work in recent years. "I knew the [Sergio] Leone scores and loved them, but really became hooked while living in Italy in the '90s," he says. "His compositions are virtually everywhere -- you hear them on late night TV programs, '60s pop radio stations, in jingles and in classical repertoires. I became fascinated with the depth of his work and fell in love with his compositions as they became a part of my everyday life."

The track list for "Crime and Dissonance" was assembled by Sun City Girls member Alan Bishop. "I was given a specific list of Morricone film scores to choose from which were available to license and assembled the compilation from that list," he says.

But when Bishop wanted to include an extra track, he hit a snag. "The only difficulty at all was waiting for Sugar Records to allow the licensing of the final track, an 11-minute epic cut from 'Un Uomo Da Rispettare' [A Man To Respect]," he says. "It wasn't on the original list given to me to choose from but I really thought it belonged in the set and would be the perfect finale for the compilation.

"There have been so many Morricone compilations over the years that it's difficult to choose strong tracks which have never been on previous comps, and it's no different with this one," Bishop continues. "His true fans are waiting for the scores that have not been reissued and some that were never originally released. The Cometa label did several highly sought-after Morricone soundtrack LPs in editions of 500 and 1000, yet only one has been reissued so far. Great scores like 'Matchless' and 'Mysticae' are examples of these."

Patton is thrilled that the collection focuses on the uncommon. "With the wealth of Morricone comps, collections and reissues available out there we felt it was imperative to compile something truly special and different," he offers. "On a more personal level, I wanted this collection to feel more like a tribute to one of my favorite composers."

Bishop names "A Man To Respect" and "Quella Donna," from the film "Forza G," as two favorites. "All tracks work in the sequencing quite well due to the comp's experimental context," he says. "It's truly a compelling listening experience and shows what Morricone has accomplished for cinematic moments of oddity."

Although the Rome-based Morricone had no involvement with "Crime and Dissonance," he continues to compose and occasionally perform. "His work ethic has been relentless over the years but he's been slowing down his production lately," Bishop says. "Also, his son, Andrea, has been composing for film consistently now for a few years."

Herbie Hancock Makes Allstars Album

Jazz great Herbie Hancock is following the Santana template and has recorded an album featuring all-star guests.

On the album 'Possibilities', Hancock is joined by John Mayer, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Sting, Joss Stone, Jonny Lang, Raul Midon and Tret Anastatasio as well as Carlos Santana.

"This is real collaboration that we're doing here. It's all been decided at the session," Hancock said in a statement, "a record without borders, woven like a tapestry with many colors."

The album will be released through Warner Music on September 1.

From SteveLukather.net - Last week the band made their decision about the title of the new Toto album: Falling In Between. The album will be released January/February 2006. The Toto world tour 2006 will start in February 2006.
Steve Lukather: "We now can say it officially: the title of the new Toto record will be Falling In Between. Artsy and cool sounding and it defines us musically as falling in between styles and falling in between being young and old... It describes our music as no one can put us in one box style wise, never have been able to. We have fallen in between the cracks as we play so many styles. This is what pisses critics off. Versatility. They want there "rock music" very simple a defined. 2 things which we are not, hahaha. It also defines where we are at in terms of our lives. We are not young, yet we are not old yet either. Falling in between is also the lead track on the record. I think its more a 'Pink Floyd esque' title myself and that's what we are going for... Believe me this hasn't been easy to get 7 people to agree on a title.
We have the photos being made by a guy named Jeff Sedlik who did Miles, Dizzy, BB King, all very hip black and white shadowed photos... should be cool."
"The record is really starting to take shape. We have been working on it for 8 months with a few more to go so you KNOW we are REALLY trying hard and working hard to make this our best yet musically speaking. Now we all know that radio will be tough but we have some interesting ideas on how to get past that which we will tell you about as we get closer to the release. So far the band have 10 tracks in the can, very rough on the mixes, no EQ or EFX. The tentative song titles are:

The overall sound of the album is fresh and new and alternating different styles, from prog rock to old school Toto. It wasn't really thought out but yet we wanted it to be like that."
During the next weeks the band will announce the tour dates for 2006 and further release plans.

Ok, so I couldn't let a major Toto news item pass without a quote from the man himself. I e-mailed Lukather and asked if he possibly had anything else to add. of course he did!
"Hey man, The new album is a labour of love. It's 7 months in and we are working VERY hard on it. Jan. release and world tour starts in Feb. Its not the "same old same old" at all. We are digging deep and we know there are high expectations as some feel we have not done anything relevant in awhile. Mindfields was a start and a reunion with Bobby. I see the flaws but there was some good stuff as well, depending if you like us or not. haha...BUT, now that we have been playing live and living and breathing the concept of doing something that we feel is living up to our potential...well it feels good and we are really trying as hard as we can.
