Danger Mouse makes "Black" and "White" equal "Grey"

It's the ultimate remix record: Underground DJ Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) takes a cappella tracks from Jay-Z's The Black Album and composes new beats for each song using only samples from the Beatles' "White Album." The result, the aptly titled Grey Album, is an ingenious hip-hop record that sounds oddly ahead of its time.
"I had seen that there were these a cappella Jay-Z records," says Danger Mouse, a New York native who has found his greatest success in England. "I was listening to the Beatles later that day, and it just hit me like a wave. I was like, 'Wait a minute -- I can do this.' "

Even though DM is limiting his sounds to the two source albums, Grey is hardly a straightforward mash-up record. Jigga's ubiquitous "Change Clothes" is now spit out over some sped-up harpsichords from the Beatles' "Piggies," infusing the track with a goofy bounce. On the other end of the spectrum, the gunning guitar blasts from "Helter Skelter" are cleverly spliced throughout Jay's arrogant "99 Problems," giving the track a rumbling metal undertone that recalls Run-DMC's Raising Hell.

The album will not be sold commercially, but copies are in circulation via the Web -- at press time, representatives for Jay-Z and the Beatles could not be reached for comment.

"If somebody like Ringo or Paul McCartney heard it, I think they would dig it," says Danger Mouse. "If Jay-Z heard it and said, 'This sucks, dude,' then I'd be like, 'OK, everyone please send me back their copies.'"

Producer Of The Grey Album, Jay-Z/ Beatles Mash-Up, Gets Served

EMI sends cease-and-desist orders to Danger Mouse, several independent retailers carrying the album.

It was an ingenious idea, and one that played so dangerously close to the third rail of copyright law that it was sure to get shut down eventually.

Cease-and-desist orders went out last week to the producer who created The Grey Album and the few independent retail stores that were carrying the CD.

DJ/producer Danger Mouse married vocals from Jay-Z's recent The Black Album with beats made from the Beatles' classic The White Album to create The Grey Album. The "mash-up" CD is one of several bootlegs created using vocals from Jay-Z's supposedly final LP (see "Remixers Turn Jay-Z's Black Album Grey, White and Brown"). But it was the only one that dared to use music from the Beatles' guarded catalog.

A representative for EMI Records served the cease-and-desist orders to Danger Mouse and stores such as Fat Beats and hiphopsite.com. EMI Records controls the sound recordings for the Beatles on behalf of Capitol Records Inc. The publishing side of the Beatles' catalog is owned by Sony Music/ ATV Publishing, a venture between Sony Music and Michael Jackson.

Danger Mouse said he created The Grey Album strictly as a limited-edition promotional item (only 3,000 copies were pressed), but it quickly caught the ear of everyone from Damon Dash to the Neptunes to Jay-Z himself, and copies found their way to hip-hop retail outlets and auction sites like eBay.

Danger Mouse said he's complied with the order not to distribute any more copies of The Grey Album. Because of the small number pressed, he didn't expect any further legal action to take place.

Instead of worrying about online "mash-ups" and the like, EMI should worry about its own legacy. In other words, EMI should be more concerned with cleaning up and re-releasing the Beatles' own catalogue. We're still stuck with compact discs made in 1987, "remastered" with primitive technology and featuring skimpy artwork! It's yet another example of EMI's lack of priorities. By the way, there was a cool fan mash-up of Paul's "Silly Love Songs" and Eminem's "Without Me" that came out a while back.

The current Rolling Stone, a cut from THE GREY ALBUM by Danger Mouse is no. 2 on the HOT LIST chart, the RS editor's top singles picks. The song is "Change Clothes" by Jay-Z with samples from "Piggies" from THE WHITE ALBUM, featuring the harpsichord.

Grey Album Generates More Than One Millions Downloads

Following a cease and desist order from EMI Records, the Danger Mouse 'Grey Album' was offered around the world yesterday (Feb 24) as an illegal download and the result made it the most downloaded piece of work on the Internet for the day.

More than 1,000,000 downloads of the various songs from The Grey Album were recorded. According to the organisers of Grey Tuesday, "Danger Mouse moved more units than Norah Jones and Kanye West, and the Grey Album easily went gold in a day, with over 100,000 copies downloaded. That's more than 1 million digital tracks".

The Grey Album is the mix record made by DJ Danger Mouse merging the works of Jay-Z's Black Album with The Beatles White Album, hence The Grey Album.

Only 3,000 copies of The Grey Album were pressed for sale but EMI intervened with the cease and desist order. "EMI isn't looking for compensation, they're trying to ban a work of art," said Downhill Battle's Rebecca Laurie in a statement.

Co-founder of the organization Holmes Wilson has a stronger view. "Special interests, including the major labels, have turned copyright law into a weapon," he says. "If Danger Mouse had requested permission and offered to pay royalties, EMI still would have said no and the public would never have been able to enjoy this critically acclaimed work. Artists are being forced to break the law to innovate."

Regardless of the statements of Laurie and Wilson, it is illegal in most countries to not only use someone's work without permission and sell it or give it away.

Скачал-таки себе "серый" из нета. Что сказать? Более или менее сносным показались "December 4th" с гитаркой из "Mother Nature's Son", "99 Problems", в которой рэп неплохо лег на жесткий ритм "Helter Skelter", забавно сделана "Change Clothes" в сочетании с "Piggies", и "Justify My Thug" с "Rocky Raccoon" (и заездами Джей-Зи в хейливский "Rock Around the Clock" и мадонновскую "Justify My Love").
Самый прикольный и интересный трэк, на мой взгляд - "Encore" c ленноновским "ooh yeah" из "Glass Onion", впоследствии переходящий в "Savoy Truffle".
В целом же скажу: те, кто не переносит рэп вообще, лучше не связывайтесь. Я лично не смог прослушать все песни подряд. Рэп давит. Все остальные имеют шанс получить несколько мгновений веселья.
Прецедент имеется. Какой следующий классический альбом на очереди?
