Rock legends of the Sixties turn back the clock - in their sixties

IN THE Sixties secret meetings were held to ensure that their latest releases never clashed, but Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Mick Jagger are now going head to head in a battle of rock’s living legends.

Stadiums have been booked and spanking new albums presented to their record company as Sir Paul and the Rolling Stones set out to prove that Coldplay have nothing on these sixtysomethings.

A friendly rivalry has existed between Sir Paul, 63, and Sir Mick, 62, since Lennon and McCartney donated their song I Wanna Be Your Man to give the blues hopefuls a hit in 1963.

When the Beatles and the Stones reached their peak, release dates for their singles were staggered so as not to test the loyalties and pocket money of fans; but after decades resting on their greatest hits both artists are prepared to fight head-to-head to prove that new material is the most vital music each has recorded for 20 years.

Listeners will get the chance to judge when Sir Paul’s Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard arrives in stores next month just seven days after A Bigger Bang, the Stones’ first studio album in eight years.

The records are both “back-to-basics” releases, with McCartney returning to snappy, three-minute melodies, while the Stones have chosen a no-frills blues and soul approach.

The albums, though, are mere curtain-raisers for two hit-packed, 18-month world tours that are likely to become the most lucrative in history.

Insurers are satisfied that the fitness fanatic Jagger, cancer survivor Charlie Watts, 64, reformed alcoholic Ronnie Wood, 58, and rock of ages Keith Richards, 61, can withstand what may be their final global trek. They aim to play to three million before packing their instruments away.

Tickets for the tour, which opens in Fenway Park, Boston, next week, cost up to £200; Sir Paul will chase the Stones through many of the same venues weeks later.

Sir Paul has sold out four nights next month at Madison Square Garden, New York, where he will perform to 100,000 fans, but the Stones will have already taken New York, using the Garden as a “club show” before they play at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

The Stones pioneered the modern stadium tour and have grossed £1.2 billion since 1989. On this tour special tickets will allow fans to join the band onstage. Several hundred seats will be built directly into the stadium set. Sir Paul will rely on the quality of his songs rather than fireworks and gimmicks to entertain the crowds.

The stadium shows will reach Europe next summer before touring Australasia and the Far East. By then EMI, the record company which now houses both legendary artists, hopes that their new records will be lodged alongside Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs in contemporary record collections.

The Stones are trying to create a “buzz” by offering three tracks exclusively for downloading a month before the 16-track A Bigger Bang is released. In reality, Radio 2 is now vital for the former hellraisers to reach their audience, and Ken Bruce was given the world exclusive on their new single, Streets of Love. By contrast, the marketing campaign for Sir Paul presents him as the father figure to every subsequent generation of hip rock bands.

Sir Paul hired Nigel Godrich, Radiohead’s producer, to give his new record a contemporary sound, but McCartney threatened to walk out when the newcomer accused him of becoming complacent.

Sir Paul said: “He’d say ‘You’ve done better than that.’ In the end I started to value that more; it’s what I need.”

No less competitive, Sir Mick wants the new album to return the group to the top of the charts. “We’re pretty excited about this record. We think there’s really good stuff on it,” he said.

A Bigger Bang is released on September 5, with Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard following on September 12.

Beatles vs. Stones. 'Twas the great cultural debate of the 20th century, and here in the 21st -- all the really cool Beatles dead, all the surviving Rolling Stones undead -- the conundrum shifts to which exorbitantly priced nostalgia-pimping arena tour will embarrass and horrify you less. So what'll it be? Paul McCartney trudging through "The Long and Winding Road" at San Jose's intimate HP Pavilion, or Mick Jagger and the boys giving "Jumpin' Jack Flash" its 20,000th spin upon a ludicrously extravagant stage at SBC Park?
Both, you say? Don't feel like paying rent this month, do ya?

Paul has a few key advantages. Gala opener "Magical Mystery Tour" joyously dropped like a bomb on last Tuesday's HP crowd, and nearly half of the two-hour-plus hoedown that followed exploited old Beatles tunes so dominant you hardly need to hear them anymore -- if you honestly require an alt-weekly music critic to sell you on "Drive My Car" or "Blackbird," you're a bigger doofus than the guy who wrote it. And that, after all, is McCartney's other great strength: He's a doofus. Proudly. His presence and stage banter is pure arena rock cheese. He's a ham. He's your dad. He's Woody Allen with self-confidence. But that lack of pretension -- his alarming disinterest in projecting any kind of Cool whatsoever -- makes him infinitely more tolerable.

So enjoy the doofus, whether he's turning "I Will" into an indisputably lovely solo picnic serenade or commanding his cadre of far more Rockstar-affected sidemen -- by all means introduce the band, Paul, but don't let them talk -- through the cream of his post-Beatles crop: "Jet" and "Let Me Roll It" retain a corny '70s stadium-rock charm. Don't be surprised if that whole Wings era undergoes a hipster renaissance in coming years, with MySpace Generation kids scrambling to re-create the awkward grandiosity of "Live and Let Die." (Trust me, it's not nearly as terrible a future as it sounds.) Even the obligatory cuts from his new sorta-okay baroque-pop album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, didn't send everyone scrambling for more nachos, though Paul wheezed through "Jenny Wren," perhaps distracted by an audience sign reading "My Grandma Saw You at Candlestick Park."

Otherwise, "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" seemed to thrill die-hards clamoring for Beatles deep-cuts, and "Let It Be" -- here performed by candlelight -- remains one of humanity's greatest cultural achievements, slotted comfortably in the Top Five between Internet porn and the half-cherry/half-Coke Icee. And you have to admire the love Paul still inspires -- every song triggered thirty seconds of standing ovations and deep bowing. By all means, let him roll it.

Mick Jagger, conversely, is most definitely not your father, and he gyrates about as though intent on fathering multiple litters of illegitimate pebbles yet. Sunday night's SBC Park soiree was deadly serious business, from the enormous stage (built to resemble -- and I can't explain this -- an airport parking garage) to the big-shot opening act: Metallica. Yikes. The well-adjusted, egoless stars of Some Kind of Monster thrilled half the sellout crowd and terrified the rest: "This doesn't sound like something I'd dance to," noted one graying and balding gent to another as they held court at respective urinals as Metallica lurched through "King Nothing." No deep cuts for superfans here -- just sleepwalking jaunts through "One" and "Enter Sandman" and, oddly, "Turn the Page," the band's usually atrocious Bob Seger nod that, in such an outlandish setting, wound up sounding inexplicably awesome.

But the Stones, man. Mick is harder to love than Paul just because he's still desperately trying to project that ultra-sexy Rockstar image, but there's something mesmerizing about Jagger's geriatric sashays and the riveting/horrifying one-two guitar punch of Ron Wood and Keith Richards, who just absolutely cannot possibly be alive. But other than a disastrous two-song interlude with Keith on lead vocals -- by all means introduce the band, Mick, but don't let them sing -- the Stones made megalomaniacal machismo seem perfectly natural and highly enjoyable. Their patented Airport Parking Garage stage proved quite resourceful, with a couple hundred fans packed into its upper levels, and a motorized mini-stage trolley that slowly pushed the boys through the crowd. It's tough not to be awestruck as Mick belts out "Honky Tonk Women" as a rapt, panoramic audience exults all around him. Even the absurdly oversexed stuff worked. A salacious cover of Ray Charles' "Night Time Is the Right Time" -- Mick gleefully molesting his duet partner as she soul-shrieked her accompaniment -- brought the house down, and the last forty-minute sprint ("Sympathy for the Devil," "Paint It Black," etc.) was a dogpile of classic rock Mount Olympii.

It's awfully tempting to dismiss these sorts of shows as boomer-gouging cynicism, or lament the lack of current bands that'll gouge us twenty years from now -- will we drop $500 large to behold Death Cab for Cutie in Google Arena? But having never witnessed a Beatle or a Stone in the flesh before last week, I am relieved to have done so before those mortal coils start shuffling off en masse. You feel a variety of conflicting emotions during nostalgia-pimping arena tours, but regret, thankfully, is not among them.

Paul McCartney is amused that the Rolling Stones are playing the Super Bowl XL halftime show on Sunday (February 5th) in Detroit, one year after McCartney did the same for Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Florida. McCartney told us that, the way he sees it, the Stones have always followed the Beatles'lead: "It's not bitchy, but if you look at the career of the Beatles and the Stones, they always do stuff a year after we do. So we do Sgt. Pepper and about a year later they do Satanic Majesties, they do their psychedelic album. The Beatles come to America, about a year later the Stones do. So I like it. They're holding true to form."

McCartney didn't want to take the Stones to task too much, however: "It's all a bit of fun, really, you know, that's the main thing. As long as everyone's enjoying themselves, and the audiences are, so it's good enough for me."

McCartney is nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. He'll perform for the first time ever at the ceremony, which takes place Wednesday (February 8th) in Los Angeles and will be televised at 8:00 P.M. ET on CBS.

After Super Bowl XL, the Stones resume touring on February 8th in Atlanta, Georgia.

Как раз копаю эту тему. В интервью открытым текстом не говорят, но очевидно: на отличную пластинку "конкурентов" нельзя было отвечать выпуском хреновой. Так и соревновались все 60-е. А когда FabFour распалась, "роллингов" хватило всего на два по-настоящему великих альбома... ИМХО...

Похоже, что для "роллингов" самым успешным годом "конкуренции" с "Битлз" стал 1967-й - когда они выпустили два полноценных, очень сильных альбома. А в 1968-м "Битлз" издали свой лучший сингл "Хей, Джуд" и сильнейший двойной "Белый альбом" - на этом фоне "Банкет бедняков" выглядел значительно скромнее.
А кто из биографов описывал сцену, когда на "роллинговскую" вечеринку по поводу выхода "Банкета" пришел Маккартни и включил только что отпечатанный экземпляр "Хей, Джуд"? (если я не путаю)

Антология Битлз точно была в электронном виде. Кажется, и сейчас можно найти. О "Стоунз" тоже вполне могли выложить. Может быть, у нас на форуме есть счастливый обладатель бумажной версии, который к нам присоединится позже?

Да, это книга Билла Уаймена, "Роллинг Стоунз".
Битлы конечно там упоминаются, но не сказать чтоб очень часто. Есть цитаты конечно всякие, так сразу и не вспомнить.
Вопщем такой хронологических дневник Уаймена добротно приправленный всевозможными цитатами, экскурсами в историю, фотками, вырезками из газет и прочими мелочами. Битлы и "о битлах" иногда попадается.
