The Beatles' last album to be released, Let It Be was mostly recorded in early 1969, prior to Abbey Road. The music was produced by George Martin, and was then prepared for release in 1970 by Phil Spector.

Following the often fractious sessions for the White Album in the summer of 1968, Paul McCartney realised The Beatles were in danger of fragmenting further if they continued to work independently of each other. Since the death of Brian Epstein on 27 August 1967 he had worked hard to keep the group motivated, and towards the end of 1968 he hit upon the idea of filming a television special in front of an audience.

Hurtwood Edge, Surrey, England

At his home, Eric Clapton throws a party for 200 guests to celebrate his marriage to George's first wife, the former Patti Boyd. (The couple married in Tucson, Arizona, on March 27.) At the end of the evening, Paul, George and Ringo, as well as the other celebrities present, including Mick Jagger, Denny Laine, Ginger Baker and Lonnie Donegan, join Eric for an impromptu concert on a stage set up in a large marquee tent in his grounds. They run through various old rock'n'roll hits and even some Beatles' covers. Friends and family take souvenir pictures of the event, although only the above one have appeared in print. This is the closest the world would ever get to a live performance by the former Beatles after they broke up.

Live: Town Hall, Alloa, Scotland
8.00pm, Friday 20 May 1960 (52 years ago)

The Silver Beetles' seven-date tour of Scotland, backing singer Johnny Gentle, began on this day with a performance at the Town Hall in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.
The tour had been arranged by London-based promoter Larry Parnes - known in the industry as 'Parnes, Shillings and Pence' - following an audition in Liverpool on 10 May 1960.

They were never billed as The Silver Beetles on the tour; all posters gave the billing as "Johnny Gentle and his group". However, they decided to adopt stage names.

The repertoire throughout the Scottish tour was: Buddy Holly's It Doesn't Matter Anymore and Raining In My Heart, Elvis Presley's I Need Your Love Tonight, Ricky Nelson's Poor Little Fool, Clarence Frogman Henry's I Don't Know Why I Love You But I Do, Eddie Cochran's Come On Everybody and Jim Reeves' He'll Have To Go.

Johnny Gentle first met The Silver Beetles half an hour before they went onstage in Alloa, and they had just 20 minutes of rehearsalance. Gentle gave Harrison a black shirt to wear on stage, to match those worn by Lennon and McCartney.

This first night was somewhat ragged, but they improved over the following six days. This was the only date of the tour not to take place on Scotland's north east coast; the others were all around the coast in the Highlands.

Concert at the Gaumont, Southampton (3rd British tour).
Live: Gaumont Cinema, Southampton
8.00pm, Monday 20 May 1963 (49 years ago)

The third date of The Beatles' tour with Roy Orbison took place at the Gaumont Cinema in Southampton. Also on the bill were Gerry and the Pacemakers, David Macbeth, Louise Cordet, Tony Marsh, Terry Young Six, Erkey Grant and Ian Crawford.

The Beatles performed the same seven songs throughout the tour: Some Other Guy, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Love Me Do, From Me To You, Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout.

This was The Beatles' first performance at the Gaumont in Southampton. They returned on two other occasions, 13 December 1963 and 6 November 1964.

The venue opened as the Empire Theatre in 1928, and became the Gaumont in 1948. In 1987 its name changed to the Mayflower Theatre.
