John and Cynthia Lennon, George Harrison and Pattie Boyd fly to London from Tahiti

“Three weeks after beginning their holiday in Tahiti, John and Cynthia Lennon, George Harrison and Pattie Boyd flew back to London Airport.
The sun's there if you want to go and get it - I don't give a damn about the sun. You go out to these places and waste your time lying on the beach; I did it with George for three weeks. We were as brown as berries and we got home and it had gone the next day, so what's the point? I didn't feel any healthier - I was dead beat. John Lennon, 1965 Anthology

The return journey involved a stop-over in Los Angeles, before the group departed for London.

“The holiday was fantastic, but after four weeks we'd had enough. By now we'd drifted further and further from Tahiti and didn't relish the thought of a long boat ride home, so we hopped on a flying boat and went back and spent a day around Tahiti. We then caught a Pan Am 707 coming from New Zealand which took us to Los Angeles. The four of us were the only passengers on the plane and I remember lying on the floor, sleeping, as we had so much space to ourselves. In Los Angeles we went on a bus trip that took us around Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills and all the stars' homes: 'On your left is Jayne Mansfield's house,' and all that. We were only back in London for about a week before we left for Denmark, Holland, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand on tour. Soon we were back about a stone's throw away from where we'd just been in Tahiti.” John Lennon, 1965 Anthology

Live: Capitol Cinema, Cardiff
8.00pm, Monday 27 May 1963 (49 years ago)

The Beatles' first concert in Cardiff, Wales, took place during their UK tour with Roy Orbison. They performed at the city's Capitol Cinema.

Also on the bill, in order of appearance, were the Terry Young Six, Ian Crawford, Louise Cordet, David Macbeth, Gerry and the Pacemakers, comedian Erkey Grant, and Roy Orbison. The Beatles were the headline act, and were paid £100 for the appearance.

They performed a seven-song set: Some Other Guy, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Love Me Do, From Me To You, Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout.

Prior to the show the group was visited by musician Dave Edmunds, who at the time was working in a Cardiff music shop. He was sent to the venue by the store's manager, with the orders to try and sell The Beatles anything they might need for the show.

"They were setting up, going for a sound check in the afternoon and we rolled in," Edmunds told BBC Radio Wales in 2001. "There was no security in those days. I stayed for the whole day.

"In the evening, I was just standing on the side of the stage watching The Beatles do their first tour. We were too nervous to charge them so we just gave them everything, all the sticks and strings. I gave Paul McCartney a set of bass strings."

The Beatles performed at the Capitol Cinema on two subsequent occasions: 7 November 1964 and 12 December 1965.

Cilla Black goess to #1 on the UK singles chart with "You're My World".

Although the original Italian version by composer Umberto Bindi was not a hit, even in Italy, the song came to the attention of UK record producer George Martin, who commissioned an English version to be recorded by his protégée Cilla Black.

Black cut the song — translated as "You're My World" — at Abbey Road Studios with Johnny Pearson conducting his orchestra and The Breakaways providing background vocals; Black has said that her manager and future husband Bobby Willis also sang on the track. Big Jim Sullivan was the lead guitarist on the session

The Beatles visit Dylan at the May Fair Hotel, London.

The Beatles were all fans of Bob Dylan, whom they had first met in May 1965. A year later they met him once again, during his tour of the United Kingdom.

In 1965 Dylan divided audiences by moving from his folk roots and adopting electric instruments. On this tour he was backed by The Band, and on 26 and 27 May 1966 was scheduled to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The occasion was a fractious one, with audience members jeering and protesting at his new direction.

Dylan invited The Beatles to his shows, and John Lennon and George Harrison attended the second Royal Albert Hall show. Furthermore, all four Beatles spent time with Dylan in London nightclubs and at his hotel.

Following his 26 May concert, Dylan visited Kenwood, Lennon's home in Weybridge. The following day the pair were filmed being driven to the May Fair Hotel in Stratton Street, London, where Dylan was staying.

Present in the limousine was director DA Pennebaker, who had been hired to make a documentary on Dylan's UK tour, and sound operator Bobby Neuwirth. The footage, titled Eat The Document, was later shelved after the US TV network ABC, which had funded the shoot, rejected a rough cut.

Two 10-minute film reels were filled during the journey to London. Lennon and Dylan were evidently recovering from the after effects of drug taking, and both wore sunglasses and smoked cigarettes. In the first reel the pair discussed contemporary musical acts, including the Mamas and the Papas, Barry McGuire, The Silkie and Johnny Cash.

Following the evening concert, Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Aspinall and The Rolling Stones all visited Dolly's nightclub on Jermyn Street, London.
