Ono, Pink Spread the Love
Aguilera, Etheridge also contribute to gay rights compilation
Yoko Ono, Christina Aguilera, the Dixie Chicks, Mandy Moore, Pink, Emmylou Harris, Cyndi Lauper and Melissa Etheridge are among the thirty-two artists featured on the double-disc compilation, Love Rocks, due February 25th. Proceeds from the set go to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization dedicated to fighting for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.
One issue that galvanized the musicians involved is the ongoing constitutional battle to legally sanction same-sex marriage.
"I just think it's a human rights issue," Ono, who contributes "Every Man Has a Man" -- a Middle Eastern-seasoned remix of her 1980 song "Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him" -- tells Rolling Stone. "The constitution of this country is based on human rights and justice and freedom . . . For [politicians] to say, 'OK, we're going to change the constitution so the gays can't get married,' I think it is outrageous . . . I just immediately started to feel that it was important to send that message out that anybody can fall in love regardless of the difference of religion, or race, or sex, or age. Love is love. It's beautiful.
"My generation knows that if two people are fortunate enough to fall in love, they should be protected equally under the law," says Moore, who does a poppy reading of Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move."
Adds Pink, "I think it is so important for us, through music, art and even politics, to stand up and use our voices; to support and promote any and all acts of love and commitment between any and all types of people."
"All of us have the responsibility to visualize a better world for ourselves and our children so we'll get there," Ono continues. "In reality, the truth is what we create. It's in our hands."
