Chop Shop" Who wants yesterday's guitars?".

THE Welsh singing star who once knocked the Beatles off the number one spot in the charts, has released a rare new album in time for Christmas.
Recollections is a collection of 11 songs originally recorded by Swansea Valley-born Mary Hopkin between 1970 and 1986.
But the singer revealed yesterday the tapes containing the old songs nearly landed her in hospital.
She said: “There were about 30 hefty two-inch tapes weighing heavily on my mind, and also on my bedroom ceiling.
“They had been gathering dust in my loft for many years and one morning I woke up to an ominous creaking sound as a huge crack appeared in the ceiling.
“So, with some prodding from my daughter, Jessica, we decided to release them from their dusty boxes before the ceiling fell in.”
Ms Hopkin shot to fame in 1968 with Those Were The Days, recorded on the Beatles’ Apple label.
When she later married top record producer Tony Visconti – who guided Marc Bolan and David Bowie’s early careers – she soared to celebrity status.
Her first solo public performance had been at the age of four, singing a hymn in the local church hall in Pontardawe where she grew up.
She also sang in rugby clubs and choirs, but got her big break on the X Factor of the 1960s, Opportunity Knocks.
After getting rave reviews on the show, Paul McCartney – alerted to Mary’s “beautiful voice” by the ’60s model Twiggy – had her sign for the Beatles’ Apple Records and she went on whirlwind tours of the US, Canada and Europe.
Ironically, she knocked the Beatles off the number one spot in 1968 with Those Were The Days.
But after having two children she decided to drop out of the public eye and, after a divorce from Visconti, now lives in the south of France, rarely doing interviews.
However, she has continued to write and collaborate with other singers.
Her new album has been put together at Space Studios in Cardiff, where she bases her recording work and record label, Mary Hopkin Music.
She set up the label in 2005 to release material entirely on her own terms – recording in the studio only, without having to do tours, personal appearances or interviews.
It is run by her daughter, Jessica Morgan, 34, who owns Space Studios with her partner, Chris Thomas.
Ms Morgan is following in her famous mother’s footsteps as a singer songwriter in her own right doing session work and individual concerts.
When in Wales, Ms Hopkin writes and records with her son, Morgan Visconti, and Jessica.
Music industry publicist Judy Totton, who represents singers Joe Brown and Welshman Andy Fairweather Low, said of Recollections: “Mary has that exquisite, distinctive voice which made her such a star.
“That voice really stands out on this new collection of old songs and will be a must for fans of Mary Hopkin.”
Pat Richmond of Cardiff, who runs a Mary Hopkin fan site, said: “I’ve heard the album, it gets better and better with each play.”
Strawberry Fields Forever". :)
And Your Bird Can Sing - минор - When your prized possessions start to wear you down,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds -
Dear Prudence -

(11/6/2008) In her latest blog on MySpace, Mary Hopkin has announced she plans an imminent release of another album of unreleased tracks, this one to be called "Recollections." A previous album of unreleased tracks, "Valentine," was a wonderful collection and is still available through her website. Also available is a 1972 live album from Royal Festival Hall that served as her farewell concert.
Here's the information on the new album as written in her blog on Oct. 31 (which accounts for the horror metaphors):
Scary News! The new album, 'Recollections', is now at the pressing plant and features 11 previously unheard tracks sung by Mary.
Mary Hopkin continues to explore her archives, dust off some long-forgotten recordings and sends them out to air and to see the light of day in a new album of old songs. Following the release of 'Valentine' in May 2007, featuring a collection from the archives, 'Recollections', due out in mid-November, is a further 11 gems recorded between 1970 and 1986. 'Valentine' saw 12 previously unreleased tracks from the same stash, including three of Mary's own compositions. 'Recollections' features two of Mary's own, 'Another Day' and 'Who's the One?' with a cluster of other fabulous songs.
"There were about 30 hefty 2-inch tapes weighing heavily on my mind, and also on my bedroom ceiling," recalls Mary. "They had been gathering dust in my loft for many years, and one morning, I woke up to an ominous creaking sound, as a huge crack appeared in the ceiling. So, with some prodding from my daughter, Jessica, we decided to release them from their dusty boxes before the ceiling fell in."
Mary Hopkin shot to fame in 1968 with 'Those Were the Days', recorded on the Beatles' Apple label. 'Live at the Royal Festival Hall 1972', the first release on MHM, is a recording of her "farewell" concert, which marked her retirement from the public eye to concentrate on her family. She has since recorded various projects and guest appearances on albums. She has appeared on work produced by her then husband Tony Visconti - most notably on 'Sound and Vision' by David Bowie. The songs that feature on "Valentine" and "Recollections" were produced by Tony during this period.
Some other legendary names appear on the album – Blue Weaver (Amen Corner) on piano, Dave Mattacks (Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention) and Gerry Conway (Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull) on Drums, and Bruce Lynch (Cat Stevens, Richard Thompson) on bass.
The original recordings have now been digitally remixed and remastered at Space Studios in Cardiff, where Mary bases her recording work and record label, Mary Hopkin Music. MHM distributes only on the internet at www.maryhopkin.com .
Re: "The Beach Boys" vs. "The Beatles" мирное подведение итогов Автор:ExpertДата: 05.11.08 01:43:47
Product Description ebruary 2, 2008: #82 bestseller on Amazon.com's hot 100 list in the Music History & Criticism category.
Published immediately after the 'Beach Boys' tour of Australia and New Zealand in November 2007 is the first major nonfiction publication from New Zealand-based writer G. A. De Forest. Beach Boys vs Beatlemania: Rediscovering Sixties Music sets forth a polemic that serious Beach Boys observers have reiterated over the decades: that this Sixties group has not only been shortchanged measured up against longtime (it's been 43 years) media favorites the Beatles but is superior to them.
Those longhaired lovers from Liverpool shrewdly moved with every trend, reformed from leather-jacketed toughs by manager Brian Epstein into innocuous but very charming `moptops', morphing on Bob Dylan's influence into darlings of mid-Sixties counterculture ruled in a triumvirate by Dylan, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, each taking turns at being `counter' to whatever irked them. This culminated in Beatle John Lennon's 1966 claim that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. While reviled through the Bible Belt (much narrower then), the group carried on as popular as ever, except in their homeland, until their vituperative breakup announced in April 1970, when it was seen that--contrary to the fab, all-you-need-is-love exterior--there was something rotten in Apple.
Regardless, all four carried on highly popular as solo performers and Lennon and later George Harrison were martyred in turn by fans of the mystique the group and those around them had created. The pristine image remains largely intact by consensus of the mass media, one can only surmise for business reasons. And the fallacy that they improved rock by giving a second-hand standardized version of it, and reintroducing Music Hall, children's singalongs and lullabies, Easy Listening, show tunes, Europop, C&W, Classical and psychedelia as the market warranted, goes on under its own mythology with all the strength of more British blarney in 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Harrypottermania'.
Tracing the Beach Boys' Sixties career, focus is on the period of competition from 1962 when both groups were rising--the Beach Boys breaking internationally in fall that year, the Beatles growing through the British Commonwealth and breaking out a year later, followed rapidly by their conquest of the USA early 1964. By this time, harrassed by British parent company EMI and Parlophone's creative head George Martin--the Beatles' record producer and indispensable collaborator--American sister Capitol caved in and adopted the Beatles as its supremely favored act over the Beach Boys: Destiny was maneuvered over Capitol's management and A&R men, who to a man had rejected the Beatles' recordings one after the other through 1963.
In its 448 pages the book strives to explain how this happened and its consequences not only for the Beach Boys but American rivals the Four Seasons, an array of popular girl groups, and a score of major African American Soul acts--all striving to maintain artistic integrity in the face of an unbeatable, hydra-headed industry called the Beatles. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1601453175...1189&creative=374929&creativeASIN=1601453175
