Never say never again . . . May 5 2005

Rock band Cream got back together this week to play their first show since 1968. While it was hailed a success, Tryst Williams asks whether reunions are always such a good idea

'NEVER go back', goes the old football saying.

So it's probably just as well that Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker are rock musicians from legendary '60s group Cream rather than a trio of veteran strikers.

The band this week performed together again to great acclaim 36 years after their farewell appearance - but can all such reunions go so smoothly?

In recent years the success of the Friends Reunited website has thrust the spotlight squarely on old flames rekindling their teenage relationships.

This attempt at reliving an idealised youth ties in with a glut of programmes that peddle nostalgia as a cheap and easy form of entertainment - such as the I Love the 1970s/1980s strand of programmes, Hit Me Baby One More Time, and the Top 100 clip shows.

And at the same time the sounds of 20 years ago have undergone a return to vogue with a crop of current bands paying homage to the strains of bands such as New Order and The Smiths.

Friends Reunited co-founder Steve Pankhurst said, 'Our site has proved so popular because it appeals to peoples' sense of curiosity and nostalgia and affects everyone in one way or another, as we all went to school.

'Launched in the summer of 2000, the site tapped into the nation's social need to reconnect to the past and revisit the 'good old days'.

'Now with over 12 million members and still growing at the rate of a football stadium full of people (35,000) every week, there have literally been hundreds of thousands of connections made with reunions taking place up and down the country.

'Our members tell us they've been able to rekindle school friendships and relive some of the best days of their lives.'

But chartered psychologist and relationship expert Dr Pauline Rennie-Peyton warned there were hidden pitfalls in revisiting youthful romances.

'People have the expectation their old flame will be the same age and have the same energy as when they last knew that person.

'I've certainly come across it being very destructive for many people, who go off in the flush of youth and destroy their existing relationship.

'Falling in love isn't going to be the same second time around, how can it be?'

She mentioned the cautionary tale of the woman who became reunited with a childhood sweetheart, only to slowly realise with horror he was now racist.

And she added, 'There's also usually a reason couples split up in the first place and what's to say those reasons are not going to be valid second time around?'

Career-wise, the high-profile return to an old job is most often seen in the world of football and the movies.

And usually with the same less-than-impressive results.

Most famously, Paul Newman reprised the role of Fast Eddie in The Colour of Money 25 years after The Hustler; and of course, Sean Connery couldn't resist a second stab at being 007 again in Never Say Never Again.

Western Mail film critic Gary Slaymaker said, 'I suppose The Colour of Money is the best example of a character being brought back years later.

'But a cynic would say they only did it to give Newman a shot at the Oscar. I don't think it really does work for the most part, unless it's a series of films with a span of time in between.

'There's still talk of Harrison Ford reprising his role as Indiana Jones - he'll be about 70 and they'll have to call it The Wheelchair of Doom or something!'

Can a reunion ever be as good as the original? In the case of Cream maybe the answer is yes, with tickets with a face value of £50, £75 and £125 being snapped up within minutes of going on sale, and with some agencies offering them for sale at a staggering £1,700.

But sometimes going over old ground has all the allure of a dog returning to its vomit. Maybe it's time to ditch those rose-tinted spectacles...

Здорово!

Cream rises to occasion Cream rises to occasion
May 7, 2005

They were the creme de la creme and, as a reunion shows, they still are, writes Warwick McFadyen.

They are three men in their 60s. One of them was born a month before Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. They couldn't quite say they were close, never have been. Even when they were young bucks, it was always push and shove, never give and take. Friendship wasn't the glue that held them together; it was music. But even that wasn't strong enough. It all went sour.

They were Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. They were Cream, formed July, 1966; split November, 1968. They were labelled a "supergroup" in the days when that epithet still meant something. Through their virtuosity, they extended the form of the rock song. Sometimes, it collapsed into interminable noodling, sometimes, it was electrifying.

But no sooner had their star risen, then it went out. Their final concert was at the Royal Albert Hall in London. After that, they went their own ways. Clapton fell into shambolic band ventures - at first with another "supergroup", Blind Faith, with Baker that lasted less than a year - heroin addiction, rehab, a solo career and resurrection as what he always was, a bluesman; Jack Bruce had a modicum of solo success; and Baker, while engaging in jazz projects, took up his interest in polo and ponies, first in the US and then in South Africa.
But this week three grey, timeworn men ambled onto the stage of the Royal Albert Hall and played almost shoulder to shoulder the songs they had played on that same spot 37 years ago.

It was not the first time they had performed together since the split. They reunited briefly for three songs in 1993 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tickets for this week's reunion shows were gone within hours of going on sale. No sooner were they all sold then tickets were being offered on the internet for thousands of dollars. Some people might think this is a bit rich for Cream, but then their audience is older and wealthier.

Reviews of the reunion have ranged from lukewarm to ecstatic. For the fans, a trip down memory lane was nothing of which to be ashamed. Some had travelled from the US for the concerts, fathers had bought tickets for their sons. One diehard had been to both the farewell concert in 1968 and this one, and this one had been better.

But nostalgia isn't what it used to be. It used to be a feeling, often tinged with regret, for times past. Now, it is a formidable part of the music business.

Witness the Eagles. They made millions when they were first together; they're making millions now that they've reunited. In Melbourne last year, they sold out five shows at Rod Laver Arena.

As another (brief) reuniter, Ross Wilson, formerly of Daddy Cool, told The Age this year: "You don't lose skills (as you get older), you acquire them, and many of the people touring actually play better now."

Witness also Queen, albeit with Paul Rodgers standing in for Freddie Mercury, who eternally departed the stage in 1991. They are now on a short tour. Queen's drummer Roger Taylor said: "We're not doing it for the money although it helps, it's very nice. It's our profession and it's what we're good at."

A more indefinable quality to these "nostalgia shows" is the transportation of memory; just as certain scents evoke a time and place, so too music. Perhaps many of those in the Royal Albert Hall, would have closed their eyes, heard the opening riff to Sunshine of Your Love and been 16 again. All thing are possible.

"Thanks for waiting all these years," Clapton said. "We didn't go very long. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune cut us off in our prime." To which Baker replied: "This is our prime, what do you mean?"

Who could deny the old-timers their moment again in the sun?

Cream - Thursday May 5, 2005

Review by Rick Kent
I'll hit on my personal high points for Thursday the 3rd Show.

They did the same set list but a better set.! For the second number Spoonful they got more serious with it. This has to be the best song on the planet that has only two notes. Both Clapton and Bruce did some improvisational work that wasn't present the other nights. I'd guesstimate that an extra minute or even two minutes was added for this little jam on Spoonful. The concert was just getting started.

Sleepy Time Time was incredible again. Monday was incredible but tonight Clapton bumped it up a notch again. Eric seemed to be more in charge tonight. He was on.

When Ginger started with the vocals on Pressed Rat and Warthog the audience let out a cheer. People are expecting the songs and the order since the set list is published so many places. It has become a delight to hear Ginger Baker do this song. It's such a novelty. Once again Ginger and Jack were kidding around and cracking each other up and even Eric got in the act Thursday. Right away Ginger flubbed a lyric (same as Tuesday) and let out a big belly laugh (but much louder that Tuesday). I'm telling you those three guys are having a great time up there! No question.

N. S. U. is a Cream fan staple and arguably their best jam song. When the time came for what could be the jam Clapton took his stance and seemed to plant his feet for the Jack, Ginger, Eric strut. It happened folks. They light it up for about a 4 minute jam and it was heaven. Jack seemed to cut it off pretty quick. They have so many numbers to do it's a shame in a way since the jams have to be shorter. No 15 minute free for all's. One more night to change that. This was not a frantic jam of immense proportions but it hit the spot. A couple minutes longer here too.

Born Under a Bad Sign was totally bad ass. Is that a musical term? Jack was so strong here. His singing, his bass. People don't realize it but they never did this song ever live. Technically this was only the fourth time they'd played it live if you include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Awards. They are getting right! The audience went nuts after this one. I'm going to credit it mostly with Jack's singing. He really drew out the last bit.. "if it wasn't for bad luck, I've have no luck at all"... over and over and over sang different each time. Eric would have made Albert King proud tonight with his treatment of the blues guitar.

We're Going Wrong was the best they'd done it and again Jack was on for this one. They are so much better tonight. It's the third night and it's looser. Each song is seeming to be just a tad longer and more drawn out.

Badge has got wonderful reception each night. Badge has been the same every night and one of the only songs that was totally on from the first show.
This could be due to Clapton doing it so many times in his solo shows over
the years. It's really a Clapton number.

Crossroads was great Thursday. The other nights not so great. I really like this song but I've always said it's hard to hit it just right with the changes in it. Clapton seemed to really concentrate. A lot depends on how well Ginger and Eric mesh on this one and it worked. Great job guys!

White Room was tasty. You can tell they are starting to wind up for the finish. It's getting more intense. The last bit of White Room gets a jam thrown in and not a song you'd expect that to happen but it was done right. It was incredible.

Toad! I love it! Ginger was on again. Best tonight. I'm ao down with those African beats. He could stay on the toms all night and that would be enough for me. He has that swing that Eric talks about. He doesn't need to hit the skins hard to get his message across.

Most all know Toad is the last song before the encore. Just before Baker finishes up there is rush to the stage on the arena floor and I was ready, I got to center stage less than 10 feet away from Mr. Eric Clapton.

Encore

and they said.......
I’m with you my love, The light’s shining through on you.
Yes, I’m with you my love, It’s the morning and just we two.
I’ll stay with you darling now, I’ll stay with you till my seas are dried up.
In the Sunshine of Your Looooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeee!!

The last couple minutes of Sunshine was a total frenetic free for all jam. This is what we want. This is Cream. The pace was way over the top. They exceeded all the speed limits they've been putting on themselves. I was overwhelmed. This could have been my high point of the reunion. I don't see how it can get any better for Friday night.
