* Gerard "Gerry" Marsden MBE (born 24 September 1942) is an English musician, songwriter and television personality, best known for being leader of the British Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers (1959-1966, group), 1966–present (solo).

Marsden was born at 8 Menzies Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, Merseyside, and his interest in music began at an early age. He remembers standing on top of an air raid shelter singing "Ragtime Cowboy Joe" and getting a great reception from onlookers. He said to himself then, "This is what I want to do".

Gerry and the Pacemakers was the second group signed by Brian Epstein and remained among his favourite artists. Their first single was "How Do You Do It," recommended by George Martin after it was initially given to the Beatles. This was the first number one hit for the Pacemakers. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and was released on EMI's Columbia label. Marsden said the recording took four or five takes. The group's second number one was "I Like It", followed by "You'll Never Walk Alone". Other singles included "It's Gonna Be Alright", "I'm the One," "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," and "Ferry Cross the Mersey."

After leaving the Pacemakers – his brother Fred Marsden, Les Maguire and Les Chadwick—Gerry Marsden maintained a low-key career on television, and starred in the West End musical Charlie Girl alongside Derek Nimmo and Anna Neagle.

He is most remembered for the song "I Like It" and his rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone", which has been adopted as an anthem of several football clubs, the most notable being Liverpool, the club that Marsden supports. He sang the song at Wembley Stadium when Everton faced Liverpool at the 1989 F.A. Cup final shortly after the Hillsborough disaster. Marsden is a vocal Everton FC supporter and almost goes to every game on Goodison.

The Pacemakers, albeit with different musicians, still tour today and are a popular oldies draw on the circuit.

Marsden returned to No. 1 in the charts twice during the 1980s with re-recordings of two of his old hits, with all profits going to charity. In 1985 after the Bradford Football Club stadium tragedy in which 56 were killed, he formed a group called "The Crowd", which included other musicians, singers and radio disc jockeys, to produce a new version of "You'll Never Walk Alone." On 18 April, three days after the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool F.C. fans ultimately died as a result of their injuries, he joined forces with Paul McCartney, the Christians, Holly Johnson and his production trio Stock, Aitken & Waterman on a new version of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" .

Marsden's favourite recordings are "Ferry Cross the Mersey," "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" and "You'll Never Walk Alone".

In 1993, Marsden published his autobiography, I'll Never Walk Alone, co-written with former Melody Maker editor Ray Coleman.

As of 2013, he still performs a few hundred shows a year to various audiences worldwide, mostly in the UK. During 2013, he will take part in a 50th Anniversary Farewell Tour in Australia, the US and Canada.

Having decided to collect the money and donate it as a lump sum to the fire disaster fund, Marsden was shocked to discover that the appeal had been closed, and the organisers had told him that they didn't want the money. In the end, the money was donated instead to the burns research unit in Bradford.

The music publishers of the record refused to waive their royalties, resulting in a much-reduced donation of £132,000.

But it wasn't what the people attending had planned on seeing. The band performed Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," Ray Charles' "What'd I Say?," the pop standard "Red Sails in the Sunset," Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack" and other songs.

* In May 1989, a charity version of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" was released in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 95 Liverpool fans the previous month (a 96th died in 1993 as a consequence of that disaster). The song was recorded by Liverpool artists The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Stock Aitken Waterman. The single held the #1 spot in the UK chart for three weeks.

GERRY MARSDEN, lead singer of the 1960s British group Gerry and the Pacemakers that had such hits as “Ferry Cross the Mersey” and the song that became the anthem of Liverpool Football Club, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” has died. He was 78.

His family said that Marsden died Sunday “after a short illness in no way connected with COVID-19” and that his wife, daughters and grandchildren are “devastated.”

К огромному сожалению, новый, 2021-й год уже отметился первыми печальными новостями из мира музыки.

Джерри Марсден - музыкальная легенда ливерпульской бит сцены, автор известного хита «You'll Never Walk Alone», умер в возрасте 78 лет, после непродолжительной болезни.

Меломаны знают о Джерри в первую очередь в связи с группой Битлз. Группа Марсдена - Gerry and the Pacemakers не раз составляла конкуренцию ливерпульской четверке в самые первые годы существования The Beatles. Кстати, менеджер битлов, Брайан Эпстайн подписал группу Джерри сразу после Битлз.

Песню How Do You Do It? от которой в начале своей карьеры отказались The Beatles, предоставив взамен Джорджу Мартину для записи Please Please Me, в итоге записали Gerry and the Pacemakers. Мартин настаивал, что эта песня станет хитом, и в итоге оказался прав.

Новость о кончине музыканта была подтверждена в Twitter ди-джеем и другом семьи - Питом Прайсом.
