TORONTO, Oct. 5 /CNW/ - If John Lennon had lived, he would have
celebrated his 65th birthday this weekend. This year also marks the 25th
anniversary of his death. To pay tribute to this Rock and Roll legend, PEG
(Pirate Entertainment Group), a division of Toronto production house Pirate
Radio and Television, has created a multi part radio series on Lennon narrated
by Graham Nash (of The Hollies and Crosby Stills and Nash).
The first 3 hour special, "Dreaming Of The Past", airs this Sunday,
October 9th, Lennon's 65th birthday on classic rock radio stations from coast
to coast. This special covers Lennon's early years growing up in Liverpool,
the Beatles' formative days in Hamburg, Germany, the worldwide phenomenon
known as Beatlemania and the ultimate break up of the group. Interviews
include Lennon's first wife Cynthia, original Beatles drummer Pete Best, half
sister Julia Baird, Beatles' producer George Martin, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney
and dozens more of Lennon's associates.
On December 8th, the 25th anniversary of Lennon's assassination, there is
an additional 3 hour special called "The Dream Never Dies", which details
Lennon's post-Beatle years, his assassination in 1980 as well as events and
Lennon CD/DVD's that have been released since his death.
In addition to the two three hour specials, between October 9th and
December 8th, stations are airing "A Minute Of Lennon", sixty-five sixty
second features. Each minute program highlights a specific event in Lennon's
life. Pirate Entertainment Group writer/director Doug Thompson says, "We're
building a long-term, loyal audience over the two month period through 'A
Minute of Lennon' to keep listeners hooked."
Toshiba is the title sponsor for the entire Lennon series with additional
sponsorship from Tim Hortons, Goodyear and EMI Music Canada. Terry O'Reilly,
partner with Pirate Radio and Television said, "When we went to talk to
sponsors (about this opportunity), we sold out the series within five business
days."
The Lennon series is also airing nationally in the United States as well
as in Mexico, Venezuela, Australia and a half dozen other countries around the
world. O'Reilly added, "John Lennon was larger than life. We wanted to create
a series of radio that honoured his memory and did justice to his legacy.
Literally hundreds of hours of interviewing, writing and producing went into
the programs. We are extremely proud of this series."
