John Lee Hooker Jr collects custom 'Detroit' guitar
31 Aug 2005

John Lee Hooker Jr. the son of the legendary bluesman has accepted a custom-painted guitar from eclectic guitar company Painted Axe. The Epiphone SJ guitar has been customized to depict the Koppin Theatre in Detroit. The venue was one of the most important African American entertainment clubs during the 1920s. The guitar features the likes of BB King, John Lee Hooker, Bessie Smith, Ray Charles and Robert Johnson standing beneath the marquee.

Hooker picked up the guitar during a tour stop in Muncie, Indiana. "This is one bad guitar," said Hooker, as he showed his band mates the likeness of his father on the guitar.

The commission came about in June when Hooker Jr. asked Painted Axe to honour his birthplace, Detroit, and some of his musical influences. Founder of Painted Axe Michael Gauf spent time looking through photo libraries and interviewing Detroit music experts to enable him to accurately depict the era.

Gauf commented on the project saying "This was a very daunting project, considering Mr. Hookers ties to Detroit and his musical heritage. But with each step of the project, the guitar continued to take on a unique and special personality. With the last coat of clear finish, you could almost hear the music of those great Blues artists."

Hooker when on to say "You don't know how much this guitar means to me, my mother and my whole family."

Blues Veteran R.L. Burnside Dies Blues Veteran R.L. Burnside Dies

Blues veteran R.L. Burnside, who experienced a late career renaissance after being rediscovered by Fat Possum Records in the 1990s, died today in a Memphis hospital. He was 78. Fans wishing to make a donation can write the Freeland & Freeland Trust Account at P.O. Box 269, Oxford, MS 38655. All proceeds will benefit Burnside's widow, Alice Mae. Burnside is also survived by 12 children and numerous grandchildren.

"His health was declining," Fat Possum founder Matthew Johnson tells Billboard.com. "I'm trying to get an official cause of death, but the hospital can't get it out. He was our man. He was the first artist we signed, and our biggest. We were lucky to have a relationship."

Born in Harmontown, Miss., on Nov. 21, 1926, Burnside worked as a farmer in nearby Coldwater, Miss. As a youth, he was exposed to the blues of such local masters as Fred McDowell and Joe Callicott and began playing in his late teens.

"I watched him," Burnside said of McDowell in a 1996 interview with Billboard. "We lived pretty close to him at one time. I watched him and picked up a lot of stuff from him (and guitarist) Ranie Barnett. They was guys that was all around, close. I watched them play, and I kinda put my style with it.'

In 1967, fife-and-drum bandleader Othar Turner led folklorist George Mitchell to Burnside, who recorded several performances released by Arhoolie Records in 1968. For many years thereafter, he performed regularly in local juke joints, including one run by bluesman (and future labelmate) Junior Kimbrough.

By the '70s, his notoriety had spread to the point that he toured in Europe and recorded for Swing Master in the Netherlands and Arion in France.

It wasn't until the '90s that Burnside gained fame in the U.S. He appeared in director Robert Mugge's 1991 documentary "Deep Blues" and on the 1992 Atlantic soundtrack album. He cut two acclaimed albums for Fat Possum; the records, "Bad Luck City" (1993) and "Too Bad Jim" (1994), were produced by writer Robert Palmer, whose 1981 book was the basis for Mugge's film. In 1996, he also recorded an album with underground rock act Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, "Ass Pocket of Whiskey" (Matador).

After 1999 heart surgery, Burnside kept his appearance schedule to a minimum, but continued to release music for Fat Possum, including last year's "A Bothered Mind," which debuted at No. 6 on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart.

Buddy Guy Brings 'Em Buddy Guy Brings 'Em
Legend covers hits with help from Santana, Richards, Mayer

Buddy Guy's latest, Bring 'Em In, due September 20th, features the blues great's renditions of well-worn hits by artists from Bob Dylan to Otis Redding. "Up through the early Sixties, I'd walk in a bar and say, 'I'm playing what you're playing on the jukebox,'" Guy says. "This record is similar to that."

On the Chicago blues king's new disc, he puts his spin on classics from Dylan's "Lay, Lady, Lay" to Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" -- with a little help from guest stars Keith Richards, Carlos Santana and John Mayer. "He's a great blues guitarist," Guy says of Mayer, who plays on Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember."

The album may be heavy on pop songs, but Guy says he put his bluesy signature on every one of them: "Blues is like American Express. I don't leave home without it."

Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown listed as missing in Hurricane KatrinaClarence 'Gatemouth' Brown listed as missing in Hurricane Katrina

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's house, which stood on a stretch of road along Highway 11, near Slidell, La., has been completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The only thing there is a couple of cars -- both submerged to the roofs in the bayou.

To make matters worse, no one knows whether Brown, who has lung cancer was at home when Katrina struck.

The Slidell Cultural Center is currently hosting "On the Bayou: A Portrait of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown" by recent New Orleans Center for Creative Artgraduate and Slidell resident Roland Sharpe.

Кандидатуры личностей типа Yngwie Malmsteen или Steve Vai можно долго обсуждать. не говоря уже о том, что встречаются люди серьезно заносящие в 100 величайших музыкантов века Зинчука... Каждому свое.

King, at 80, is still king of the BluesKing, at 80, is still king of the Blues

Published: Thursday, September 8, 2005

By Brent Hallenbeck
Free Press Staff Writer

SHELBURNE -- Don't let B.B. King kid ya. He's not old. Can't be. Not the way he played Wednesday night.

He came out for the finale of the TD Banknorth Concerts on the Green series at Shelburne Museum and sat in a chair with his guitar, Lucille. He said he figured folks in the crowd were saying, "Ol' B.B. got so old he can't stand up and play no more. Well, you're about right."

He has diabetes. He has a bad back, he said, and bad knees. "Head ain't no good, either," he said. "Can't remember a thing.

"But I feel good tonight."

With that, he launched into the meat of a 90-minute show brimming with charismatic style and put-a-lighted-match-to-kerosene energy that's practically unfathomable for a guy who's turning 80 in a week.

The personification of the blues will be an octogenarian Sept. 16. He's putting out a new CD next week, "B.B. King and Friends -- 80" on which musical bigwigs -- Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow and Elton John among them -- bow to the king by helping him on some classic blues tunes. There's also a new book, "The B.B. King Treasures," in which he, his contemporaries and his later admirers reflect on a life that's made him one of America's most beloved musicians.

It sounds like the stuff of elegy: a retrospective CD, a glorified history book, an old man who claims he's practically disintegrating before our eyes. Don't believe it, not the way he forcefully grabs the microphone or wrings those emotional notes out of Lucille. He proves that passion doesn't have to die with age.

A B.B. King concert, even as he spends his last week in his 70s, is not just a concert; it's a torrent of personality. Though a lot of the songs he played Wednesday were written by other people, each song was soaked with the soul of B.B. King.

Willie Nelson wrote "Night Life," but B.B. King made it his own. "That's been my life for over 60 years," said King, wearing a flashy gold dress shirt untucked from his black pants. Then he sang the heck out of a tune that sounds like it was written for him ("Night life ain't no good life/But it's my life") as the sterling play of one of his seven band mates, trumpeter Stanley Abernathy, helped drive King and Lucille through the night.

U2 wrote "When Love Comes to Town" and played it with King, but it's not Bono's song. He wrote it for King. "When love comes to town," King said, "that was me."

He used the whimsy of "You Are My Sunshine" to debunk an idea he said a lot of people in the crowd might have had, that the blues, his blues, is meant to be played slow. "A lot of you don't know how much fun we have," he said. Aside from a plea to help his home state of Mississippi and the neighboring states of Louisiana and Alabama battered by Hurricane Katrina ("We need help down there. We need all the help we can get."), he had nothing but fun Wednesday. He cracked jokes about his rough-and-tumble origins -- "I'd a been scared to sit on the side of a hill when it got dark," he said from a stage with its back to the sun setting over the high peaks of the Adirondacks. He told amusing, long-winded, fragmented stories, including one about sitting on a street corner after cataract surgery and practically wearing out his one good eye watching the ladies walk by.

B.B. King knows he's an entertainer -- he couldn't have left, of course, without a rapid-fire version of his signature tune, "The Thrill Is Gone" -- but he's so self-effacing that he never comes off as if he thinks he's entertaining. He just wants his listeners to have a good time, and appreciates that they've given him a good time in return for all these years.

"I thank God, and I thank you," he said to the cheering crowd on a hillside at the Shelburne Museum, "for helping me to make this journey for so long."

He's not about to stop being a crowd-pleasing showman just because he's almost 80. That's why he ended his new book with this:

"This is my belief," he wrote. "I believe that I'm never any better than my last concert. I believe that each night I do a concert or do a show it's like an audition, 'cause I remember the days when it was. If you played a night and somebody came in the next night and played better than you, you didn't come back. So I still have that mentality if that's a word to use.

"That if these people didn't like me, what would I be doing. Probably plowing."

B.B. King & Friends - 80B.B. King & Friends - 80

Label: Universal

If you like: B.B. King (and who doesn’t?)

Song to download: “Early In The Morning,” with Van Morrison

The title of bluesman B.B. King’s new album, 80, signifies his 80th birthday (Sept. 16), but it could just as easily be the number of albums that King has released.

King remains potent, as 80 underscores. He sings with remarkable power and passion, and his stinging minimalist guitar style - one of the most distinctive and influential in modern music - still hits the mark.

But longevity also translates to a musical catalog of varying quality and necessity. That said, 80 is not the place for King neophytes to test muddy waters. The disc is the latest of many in which King holds court with musical disciples and rock royalty. Big names (Van Morrison, Eric Clapton) make for solid performances, including an unexpectedly vital version of “Hummingbird” with the suddenly ubiquitous John Mayer. Still, what, beyond marketing lure, are Glenn Fry and Gloria Estefan doing on this disc? And why does Roger Daltrey sound like an old (but good) blues woman? For the most part, these new versions of King classics are homages that fall far short of essential.
