Jagger's drug raid claim revealed

Sir Mick Jagger claimed police tried to plant "white powder" on him during a drugs bust in 1969, according to secret files just released.

The files show Scotland Yard dismissed the claims, saying the Rolling Stones frontman was caught up in "the world of users of dangerous drugs".

Sir Mick's allegations followed a police raid on his Chelsea home in May 1969, where cannabis was found.

The papers have been released by the National Archives at Kew, west London.

Legal defence

Sir Mick's home was raided by the local drugs squad, headed by Detective Sergeant Robin Constable.

The files revealed that Sir Mick made a statement to the police some weeks after the raid, alleging Mr Constable had tried to plant the "white powder" - apparently heroin - in a piece of folded up paper he produced from a box in the house.

"I think he put the box down and opened the folded paper. He said 'Ah, ah, 'we won't have to look much further'," he said.

"As I got to him he showed me the paper and I saw it contained some white powder."

The claim that Mr Constable tried to plant drugs and then attempted to solicit a £1,000 bribe went on to form the basis of the singer's defence when he was charged with cannabis possession at Marlborough Street Magistrates Court.

'Intelligent man'

He was later found guilty and fined £200 and ordered to pay 50 guineas in costs.

However, Sir Mick's claims were investigated and after interviewing all those involved, the Yard's investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector William Wilson, said that the claims came down to Sir Mick's word against Mr Constable's.

"Michael Jagger is an intelligent young man, and doubtless is on the fringe, if not embroiled in the world of users of dangerous drugs," he noted.

Mr Wilson also said he "would not be prepared to place any reliance at all" on Sir Mick's girlfriend, Marianne Faithful, who had also been in the flat at the time of the police raid.

In contrast, Mr Constable was described as a "hard working and competent police officer".

LONDON - Today, he's respectable Sir Mick. But 35 years ago Mick Jagger was a rock rebel who could rattle the authorities. Newly released police files show that in 1969, police considered Jagger an "intelligent young man" who lived on the fringe and consorted with "the dregs of society."

The records, declassified by the National Archives, detail Jagger's claim that detectives planted drugs on him during a raid on his London apartment in 1969.

The Rolling Stones singer was fined 200 pounds (about US$500 at the time) for possession of cannabis after the raid on his Chelsea home.

The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into Jagger's claim that a drug squad officer, Detective Sgt. Robin Constable, had tried to plant white powder inside a box in the house.

"I think he put the box down and opened the folded paper. He said 'Ah, ah,' we won't have to look much further,'" Jagger said in a statement to police.

"As I got to him he showed me the paper and I saw it contained some white powder. I said 'You bastard, you planted me with heroin.'"

Jagger claimed Constable then said "Don't worry, Mick, we can sort it all out."

"He twice asked me how much it was worth. He then said 'a thousand,' but I never replied," Jagger said.

Scotland Yard launched an investigation, interviewing supporters of Jagger who ranged from a lawyer and a member of Parliament to minor drug dealers.

"The private persons interviewed during the course of this investigation represent extreme ends of the scale. At one end are public figures whilst at the other are the dregs of society," noted Commander Robert Huntley, who oversaw the inquiry.

The investigation concluded that there was no "substantial corroborative evidence" for Jagger's claim against the "hardworking and competent police officer" Constable.

"Michael Jagger is an intelligent young man, and doubtless is on the fringe, if not embroiled in the world of users of dangerous drugs," said Detective Chief Inspector William Wilson, one of the investigators.

The case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who concluded that no action should be taken against the police.

Men Pick 'Satisfaction' in VH1 Song Poll 2 hours, 19 minutes ago

NEW YORK - What's your favorite summer song from the '60s, '70s or '80s? A random telephone poll of 1,000 adults by VH1 Classic had more men picking the Rolling Stones' 1965 ode to sexual frustration, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," than any other tune.

Women went for "I Got You Babe," Sonny & Cher's portrait of domestic bliss — at least until their divorce. That was also from 1965.

Others in the top five were The Police's song about an obsessive boyfriend, "Every Breath You Take," from 1983; the Doors' "Light My Fire" from 1967; and, from the Commodores in 1978, "Three Times a Lady."

VH1 Classic airs music videos, concerts and music specials featuring rock, soul and pop artists from the '60s, '70s and '80s.

Stones tracks sold online first

The Rolling Stones are putting three songs from their new album on sale via digital download, three weeks ahead of the album's release.

Rough Justice, future single Streets of Love and Back of My Hand will feature on September album A Bigger Bang.

Described as "an ambitious collection of hard-hitting, high-powered rock and blues songs", A Bigger Bang is the Stones' first studio album since 1997.

The band begins its 40-date world tour in Boston on 21 August.

The new songs are being sold by "all major" download retailers, where prices vary, the band said.

Metal support

Metal band Metallica are to support the Stones at their San Francisco shows on 13 and 15 November.

"We thought it might be fun to play a few small intimate gigs so we called up our close personal friends, the Rolling Stones," said a message on the group's website.

"Seriously, how could we say no to the quintessential rock band?

"These two shows are about nothing more than having fun and playing music. (We have) nothing to sell, nothing to promote, nothing to talk about."

Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Pearl Jam and British soul star Joss Stone are among the other acts lined up to support the Stones on the US leg of their tour.

Stones get 'Justice' on U.S. rock chart

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The Rolling Stones entered Billboard's airplay-based Mainstream Rock Tracks chart at No. 29 Thursday with "Rough Justice," a track from their Sept. 6 Virgin Records album "A Bigger Bang."

It's the first track by the veteran act to appear on the Mainstream chart in almost three years. "Don't Stop" peaked at No. 21 in October 2002. "Rough Justice" ties a live version of "Gimme Shelter" released in 1998 at the Stones' highest-debuting title on this chart since September 1997, when "Anybody Seen My Baby?" opened at No. 4.

The Mainstream tally was introduced the week of March 21, 1981. The Stones' first single to appear on this survey was "If I Was a Dancer (Dance, Pt. 2)," which entered the week of April 18, 1981, ultimately peaking at No. 25. Four months later, "Start Me Up" debuted, and became the Stones' only No. 1 hit on this list, spending 13 weeks on top.

The group made its first appearance on a Billboard chart during the week of May 2, 1964. England's newest hitmakers opened at a lowly No. 98 on the Hot 100 tally with a cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away."
