CLAPTON COMING TO TERMS WITH AGE

ERIC CLAPTON has finally accepted he is no longer a sex symbol at 60.

The veteran rocker struggled at first to come to terms with his diminishing attraction to the opposite sex.

Clapton - married to 31-year-old MELIA McENERY - says, "At first there was a little regret that women didn't look back any more when I looked at them.

"I was also concerned about weather I was a dirty old man.

"But then I found it was a tremendous relief not to be ruled by my sex drive."

Legend has it that Junior Wells and Buddy Guy first met in 1958, when recent Chicago transplant Guy beat Wells in a Battle Of The Blues competition, even though Wells was the established player on the Windy City scene. The two played together at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival and opened for The Rolling Stones on their 1970 tour. That tour was the catalyst for the recordings on this album, originally released in 1972.

When the Stones played Paris, Guy-Wells disciple Eric Clapton came over for a visit, joining Guy onstage for a few numbers. Backstage, Clapton suggested to Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun that he sign the two bluesmen. Ahmet agreed if Clapton agreed to produce the record. The deal was struck, and sessions got underway at Criteria Studio in Miami. Unfortunately the album took two years to be released, during which time some of the post-Woodstock blues buzz had subsided.

Although the Guy-Wells partnership was vital well into the '80s, Guy enjoyed his greatest commercial successes after the partnership ended, winning five Grammys—beginning with 1991's Damn Right, I've Got The Blues—and a record 21 W.C. Handy Blues Awards. Wells died in 1998.

This two-disc Rhino Handmade edition of Play The Blues presents the original 1972 Atco album in its remastered entirety, plus 13 previously unreleased tracks from the Clapton-produced sessions. New liner notes and track-by-track commentary by Mark Humphrey.

Buddy Guy & Junior Wells Play The Blues is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies.

CLAPTON: 'I NEED TO WORK UNTIL I DIE'

Millionaire rocker ERIC CLAPTON will carry on working until he dies, because he leads such an extravagant lifestyle.

Despite an estimated fortune of around $216 million (GBP120 million), 60-year-old Clapton insists he and wife MELIA McENERY, 31, spend so much their bank account will run dry if he ever stops singing.

Clapton says, "It's not a pretence. I will have to work to support the way we live."

REFORMED womaniser Eric Clapton says girls are no longer interested in him now he's turned 60.

The rock legend said: "At first there was a little regret that women didn't look back any more when I looked at them.

"I was also concerned about whether I was a dirty old man.

"But then I found it was a tremendous relief not to be ruled by my sex drive."

Clapton - known as Slowhand - is married to Melia McEnery, 31, after a string of high-profile relationships. The couple have three children under four.

He said: "I see myself as a good family man who will probably have to work for the rest of my life to support my wife and kids."

Those unable or unwilling to shell out the absurd price of Cream's reunion shows can now get some of their flavour via the inevitable live double album - or even better, the DVD, as the lack of a visual component robs this album of an essential part of the magic. The chestnuts like "Spoonful", "Crossroads" and "Sunshine of Your Love" are shorter and less indulgent than previous live incarnations - Ginger keeps his "Toad" drum solo to a relatively terse 10 minutes - and the set is marked by a restraint unthinkable in the trio's younger days. There's no waste in Clapton's quicksilver solos in "Stormy Monday" and "Sleepy Time Time", or Baker's avalanche drum rolls in "NSU" and "We're Going Wrong", and there's a raw, fiery spirit to Jack Bruce's blues-harp showcase "Rollin' and Tumblin'". The shouts for each member are scrupulously apportioned - "It's a privilege to be playing with him," that kind of thing - though if you've paid £125 and upwards for a ticket, you probably already know who's playing what. There's only two iffy tracks: "Sweet Wine", which meanders, and Ginger's vocal cameo "Pressed Rat & Warthog", with its nonsense lyric about the closure of a shop selling "atonal apples and amplified heat". Ginger is pleased to report, however, that PR&W has opened a branch in the foyer to sell T-shirts. Cute.

Interview in the December 2005 "Guitar World"...

"Well, I never travel with less than 10 other musicians, you know. I have fairly big bands. My ideal band usually has, like, two keyboard players, three guitar players, horns, girls...And I can end up playing very little. Really, I'm just a singer. And I like that kind of framework, where I can just play when I want to play."

"Playing with Cream again was much more demanding. And, actually quite, quite rewarding, too, because if you can cross the barrier and actually deliver the goods, then you end up feeling like you really took a big step. And I felt like that. By the time we played our Friday night show at the Albert Hall, I had gotten used to that sort of dynamic again, and it felt quite comfortable to do all of that work. But initially, it just felt like, God, when do I get a break here?"

За что я уважаю ЕС: он не боится меняться и не скрывает перемен. По большому счету, всю жизнь делает то, что хочет, и делает это с удовольствием. Лично мне большинство его перемен не по душе, но всегда найдется кто-то, кому понравятся, скажем, сплошные синтезаторы и сэмплированные барабаны. А мне с каждым годом все больше нравится его пение -- даже странно, что человек в таком возрасте может так усовершенствоваться в вокале. И на студийные overdubs не спишешь -- мы ведь могли слышать его пение живьем в Москве и Питере. Может он и правда теперь все больше певец? В общем, пусть ЕС делает и говорит, что хочет, он заслужил на это право. А я между тем проигнорирую его новый альбом и буду слушать Just One Night и смотреть Live in Hyde Park...
