Veteran pop acts double up on the road

HOLMDEL, N.J. (Amusement Business) - During a recent concert in New Jersey, Don Henley was doing his usual earnest job with "Hotel California" when, seemingly out of nowhere, the crowd burst into a huge round of applause.

It was the instantly recognizable voice of Henley's long-ago love interest Stevie Nicks that prompted the ovation from the crowd at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. The Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter had casually materialized mid-song to join the Eagles' frontman, creating the kind of sweetly organic rock moment fans don't experience too often these days.

Of course, artists tour together all the time either as co-headliners or as openers for each other, but it's a rarity when they actually play together, let alone interpret each other's stuff. When such pairings do come off, the result can be magical -- an X factor that all the corporate promotion in the world can't create.

Now, as promoters continue their quest to restore value and return a more authentic vibe to an industry pummeled by rocketing ticket prices and formulaic shows, the concept of major acts playing together is one that's being closely watched.

And it's one of the season's most unlikely success stories -- the double bill starring veteran bands Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, now in its second summer -- that's generated the interest.

While both acts have been strong on the classic circuit for decades and equally lauded through the years for their sophisticated horn sections, melodic singles, textured arrangements and liberal fusion of jazz, rock and soul, even at their finest there's a limit to how many times the same fans will come out.

But now, playing as something of a superband, both have moved up to touring's front ranks and have earned critical raves in the process.

"It's probably one of the best combinations that's ever happened between two bands," says EWF co-founder and bassist Verdine White. "But in the beginning, promoters didn't think this would work. My agent said it would never happen."

After a solid run last summer, the tour not only worked, it's now posting better numbers than it did a year ago, averaging more than 7,000 fans a night.

There's also a new Chicago-EWF DVD recorded live at L.A.'s Greek Theatre, and EWF is releasing its first new album in years -- "Illuminations," due Sept. 20 on Sanctuary Records.

Word is the tour will likely continue into next year, with plans to take the show to Europe and Japan.

"I've done this all my life and I can't believe how good it is," says veteran Chicago trumpeter Lee Loughnane. "It's emotional every night. I never would have imagined in a million years we'd be doing (this kind of business) this late in our careers."

MULTIPLICITY

As is usually the case with feel-good tours, value and judicious pricing ($20 to roughly $75) has led to strong word-of-mouth and plenty of repeat customers.

"Promoters probably thought the music wouldn't jell and that the audiences were too different, which we're finding is not true," White says of the pessimism that preceded the venture. "But it's like it is with Don and Stevie, you know -- if you like Fleetwood Mac you probably like the Eagles."

EWF and Chicago have done more than just jell. In a swiftly paced three-hour show, the two bands -- each of which is big to begin with at 10 or more members apiece -- first play together, then perform separate sets and then reunite for a blockbuster encore.

Fresh arrangements for classics such as "Shining Star," "25 or 6 to 4," "September," "Free" and many of their other durable singles (more than 50 Top 40 hits between them) infuse both catalogs with a vitality that even the musicians didn't envision.

"When we went into this, we all made the commitment that we were really gonna learn each other's songs," says Peter Schivarelli of HK Management, who's been shepherding Chicago since the '70s. "When both bands take the stage for that final 40 minutes, when there's 21 guys on stage jamming, no one in the audience is leaving early to beat the traffic."

Like Billy Joel and Elton John before them, the EWF/Chicago and Henley/Nicks collaborations feature acts with many clear parallels -- and many differences as well. The brief Henley/Nicks tour, which was said to be a trial for a full-fledged trek next year, was also enhanced by the artists' personal history and past collaborations. That both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac also played similar brands of California lite-rock from time to time also makes them a good match.

Warner Bros. Records vp Liz Rosenberg says Nicks and Henley have long admired one another and have remained close friends through the years. "Stevie adores Don. This is something they've both wanted to do for a while," Rosenberg says.

John and Joel were reportedly just acquaintances when talk of their pairing began in the early '90s. Years ago, Joel said it was sheer happenstance that brought the piano men together. He had become so bored with his own music, he simply stopped playing his own songs during soundchecks and instead began playing John's music every night before his own shows.

He did them so well, word eventually spread within the business and the idea for a tour came together -- a collaboration that ran for years, reportedly led to a close friendship and stands as one of the most successful live acts of all time.

More recently, first-season "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson posted solid numbers teaming with second-season runner up Clay Aiken for an arena tour in which they sang together and separately. And frequent dueter Elvis Costello is in the midst of a summer tour during which he is performing with old friend Emmylou Harris.

"I don't think anyone sits around saying, 'How do we put a great double bill together?"' Schivarelli says. "It's something that just feels right."

Balancing the needs of musicians, agents and managers from two camps is often tricky in such situations, but Loughnane says that since most of the guys in EWF and Chicago are classically trained, devoted to their music and generally easygoing, it's been smooth sailing.

White, who has been friendly with Chicago bassist/vocalist Jason Scheff for about 20 years, says that though the bands were both on Columbia Records in their '70s heydays, they didn't really know each other. "But it was always a good vibe," he says.

The current tour came together after White and Scheff did some informal jamming a few years ago, while at the same time Schivarelli was feeling out the industry. Making the financial numbers work with so many people on stage has been easier than it might seem, they all agree.

"We've learned how to go on the road," says Loughnane, who still bunks five to a bus with his bandmates. "That comes from years of overspending. We also don't have a lot of extra people on tour -- it's more pared down than it looks. With two bands, I think we have four trucks and eight busses."

Says White: "I think people think that the more stuff you see on stage, the more money you don't make -- but that's not necessarily true. When you have a sellout tour like ours, you're gonna make money."

Как-то качал в Осле видеоклип Hotel California. Поиск, помимо всего прочего выдал весьма популярный по скачиваниям файл "Hotel California - acoustic live with Eric Clapton". Ну, думаю, когда это такое было? Выкачал 70 мб, оказалось - обычный клип с "Hell Freezes Over". Видимо, имелось в виду "unplugged-версия" :)))

Внутри была гнущаяся голубенькая пластинка. На стороне "B" - группа "Ариэль" под рук. В. Ярушина.

Самый распродаваемый альбом всех времен продолжает продаваться. Согласно RIAA, разошелся еще 1 миллион копий "The Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975", и таким с 1976 года по сей день продано 29 миллионов экземпляров альбома.

Интересно, в чем секрет такой популярности диска? Ведь на нем нет Отель Калифорнии, да и еще пары поздних хитов.
Видимо, "Орлы" в Америке действительно "народная группа" (похоже, добрая часть 29-миллионного тиража была продана там).

Есть у меня эта советская пластинка (была по крайней мере). Там от "Иглз" были "Отель "Калифорния" с "вплывающим" вступлением (не сначала) и убранным концом и "Новый ребёнок в городе" (New Kid In Town), от которого откромсали где-то половину или даже больше. А пластиночка была прозрачная и красная-красная!

Хотите верьте, хотите нет, но Дон Хенли сказал испанской газете El Periodico, что новый альбом Eagles выйдет к будущему рождеству или в начале 2007-го и будет называться The Long Road To Eden. В альбом войдет одноименная песня против войны в Ираке.

Уважаю эту группу, но скучные они на альбомах до невозможности.

Частично можно согласиться, а можно и поспорить. Песни у них очень красивые. Но недостаток, на мой взгляд, в том, что они под настроение. И вот именно оно иногда и мешает по-нормальному эти произведения воспринимать...
