Well, a fantastic performance last night... sat with Phil and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Surrounded by opera buffs (hardly a Waters fan in sight in our area) and also Roger's friends and family, too.
Roger didn't conduct the Overture, but did a short introduction, read in Italian. Looked a bit anxious but with the audience as it was (certainly in the front) I'm not surprised!

The staging was superb - nice and restrained - a simple screen, with on the whole, static images fading in and out. The sound quality was stupendous - especially things like the cannon fire!

All singers were excellent, as were the orchestra.

Phil is staying on for tonight's performance, but I, sadly, had to leave Rome lunchtime today. Phil - didn't get a chance to say goodbye properly last night (you know why!) so hope tonight's is good and you have a safe journey back.

And my fingers are crossed that Roger's plans to perform the show elsewhere - North America, possibly Paris, too - come off.

Pink Floyd star Roger Waters has received mixed reviews for his new opera Ca Ira (There Is Hope), which premiered in Rome, Italy, on Thursday.

The Comfortably Numb rocker, who received a standing ovation at the city's Music Auditorium following the performance, had been dreading the Italian media's critical response to his new direction.

Speaking in September, he said, "The knives are bound to come out. People defend their own little islands of culture with great panache."

However, Waters didn't receive the slating he had been expecting.

One critic at newspaper La Repubblica described the opera as "eclectic" but added, "Waters is not so much (Guiseppe) Verdi or (Giacomo) Puccini, more Andrew Lloyd Webber...

"(The opera) was like an elephant trying to take to the air with a small pair of wings."

The world premiere performances of Roger Waters newly-released opera "Ca Ira", at the Auditorium, in the Parco della Musica in Rome, Italy, were received with much acclaim.

Tickets for the shows, held on Thursday and Friday evenings, went incredibly quickly, and those of us lucky enough to be there witnessed a fine live debut of Roger's work. In all, some 236 people took the stage during each evening - ranging from the main vocal performers, through to 100 members of the Rome Symphony Orchestra, and an 80-strong choir, some of which were children.

Billed as a gala performance, Roger's family and friends were in attendance. At the front of the stage sat the likes of Harry and India Waters, Marianne Faithful, and PP Arnold. The audience, certainly towards the front, were obvious opera fans (and not Waters devotees) and it must have hugely relieved Roger when he was met with a standing ovation.

We're currently in the midst of sorting out our full report of the show, along with some great pictures of proceedings, but in the meantime, there are a couple of TV news reports that you can view, giving a flavour of the event. It shows part of Roger's introduction on Thursday night, along with preparations for the show.

The segment covering Roger's show appears at 21 minutes, 47 seconds, and last for a couple of minutes. Again it shows the start of the show, but it also has a couple of clips from the show itself, and shows Roger in the audience watching nervously.

As reported on 3rd September of the publication on November 3rd of "Drawing Blood: Forty Five Years of Scarfe Uncensored", an eager-awaited book that sees highlights of Gerald Scarfe's career compiled into a lavish hardback book.

The book is a real feast for all Floyd fans, due to his extensive work with the band, over the years, featuring a few illustrations from The Wall which haven't been seen before - alongside the five decades of incredibly varied work he has done for all sorts of people and publications.

We recently interviewed him, and should be bringing you the transcript shortly, along with a review of his new book. In the meantime, a number of new events have been lined up:

Thursday 24th November: special screening at the National Portrait Gallery, London. 7pm. A chance to see SCARFE ON SCARFE - THE SELF PORTRAIT (BBC, Arena, 1986). A unique opportunity to see Gerald Scarfe and filmmaker Anthony Wall introduce their BAFTA award-winning film. This documentary has been buried in the BBC archives for years so catch this rare outing. Anthony Wall will introduce the film and will answer questions with Gerald Scarfe afterwards. We had the pleasure of attending one of Gerald's illustrated talks in London, last year, and another this month in Brighton, and both were fascinating and amusing looks at his career, including his work with Pink Floyd. Definitely worth going to one of these, if you can.

An incredibly rare recording of Syd Barrett, performing live on 27th January, 1972, with the Last-Minute Put-Together Boogie Band, at a show in Cambridge, has recently been unearthed, and plans are underway for a release!

Naturally, this news has spread like wildfire and anticipation is huge amongst the legions of Syd fans. Should the release of this show come to fruition (and the people behind it have outline permissions from all concerned to go ahead), it will be a fascinating, historical document for Pink Floyd fans.

The sound on the recording (shown to the right) is uneven in parts and will require 'tweaking' in a studio before it will be suitable for release. Any release is therefore some months away.

The Last-Minute Put-Together Boogie Band's set consists of 5 blues songs before Syd comes on stage for a long jam ("Number Nine") followed by 3 blues songs/improvs ("Gotta Be A Reason", "Let's Roll" and "Sweet Little Angel"). The Hawkwind and Pink Fairies sets on the reel are also reported to be worth hearing.

Syd is on stage for 29 minutes in total - the jam "Number Nine" is around 9 minutes long but segues directly into "Gotta Be A Reason". None of the songs are Syd's or Pink Floyd's. Alan Barrett (Syd's brother who makes decisions on Syd's behalf) was pitched the story of the recording and the hopes to release it, and he has contacted PF Music Publishing to give them the "OK".
