DVD Live 8 выходит раньше!

LIVE 8 DVD NEWS

Since Live 8 on 2nd July, which featured the headline-making reunion of Roger Waters with Pink Floyd, work has been underway on the DVD release of the event. We reported on this last month, where the release date was expected to be November 28th.

We were told today that the official DVD will be appearing earlier, on 7th November (8th November in the US). The DVD will contain not just concert performances, but backstage and rehearsal footage, as well.

Each region's DVD set will be tailored to reflect key artists and performances for that territory - and if there was a local show, that will get good coverage. Naturally, there will be certain artists who will appear on ALL versions of the set - and Pink Floyd is a sure thing for that category.

All the bands who performed at Live 8 surrendered their rights to the performances so nobody can refuse to be on the DVD, as Led Zeppelin did with the original Live Aid show.

The set will be released by EMI, who secured the DVD rights to Live 8 after agreeing to pay several million pounds up-front to the event’s organisers, according to a report in UK newspaper, The Times. Naturally, a show like this sparked a frantic bidding war for the rights to produce an event DVD. EMI offered the organisers a generous cut of the profits and a large advance, which helped with the running costs of the event.

The Live 8 DVD is expected to generate greater sales than the DVD of the original Live Aid show, which sold more than a million units.

Bob Geldof said: "I hope this will be the biggest selling DVD of all time. It deserves to be. [The profits from the DVDs] will help us achieve our goal of changing the lives of the extreme poor for the better and making our generation the one that helped end the disgrace of poverty."

There has been a website set up which should contain more details of the DVD soon - www.live8livedvd.com - but naturally we will also endevour to bring you the latest news regarding this release.

OFFICIAL 2006 PINK FLOYD CALENDAR DELAYEDOFFICIAL 2006 PINK FLOYD CALENDAR DELAYED

We know that many of you liked the official 2005 Pink Floyd calendar, which was designed by Storm Thorgerson and commemorated the 30th anniversary of the release of Wish You Were Here. (Indeed, a copy can be seen on the wall in the Floyd's management office!)

The same company who produced that calendar, are continuing the trend with a 2006 design, again by Storm, which currently focuses on the legendary Dark Side Of The Moon design he created with George Hardie.

There have been a few issues with the artwork, which have caused delays, and which are being ironed out. The company releasing it - PyramidPosters.com - were hoping for it to be available already, but until they get final approval over the contents, are currently looking at a September publication of this item. Despite 2006 being over four months away, people do seem to want to get hold of these official calendars early!

As with last year's, the calendar is a large format, glossy colour production, featuring twelve seperate images. To give you an example of how Storm's imaginative design skills might come into play, we've shown below this year's January page.

Orders are currently being taken at Amazon through the following special links: UK/Elsewhere, France, or Germany. A limited number of the 2005 calendars are still available from Amazon. You can also get the calendar from the Pyramid Posters website.

Images used with permission of Pyramid Posters, and © Storm Thorgerson. No unauthorised use!

DVD REVIEWDVD REVIEW
PINK FLOYD'S "LONDON 1966-1967"

Hot on the heels of the recent CD release, the long-awaited DVD of "Pink Floyd - London 1966-67" has now arrived. Attempts were made a couple of years ago to release this on DVD, but there were problems that stopped this happening. It's great news that these problems have now been overcome; it is bound to be a popular release.

It is a fascinating look at the early days of the band, featuring the classic line-up of Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Rick Wright, shown in action in the studio and live in concert, at the UFO club.

Additional footage captures "swinging sixties" London and interviews with Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, David Hockney and Julie Christie.

The DVD features full length and extremely rare performances from the band’s recording session at the now defunct Sound Techniques Studio, London, on the 11th and 12th of January 1967 for Peter Whitehead's "Tonight Let's Make Love In London" film.

It also has footage of the now legendary 14 Hour Technicolor Dream Extravaganza gig in April 1967 at Alexandra Palace. The footage from Alexandra Palace includes Yoko Ono's performance art (with a model having her clothes cut off with a pair of scissors!) and a Sgt. Pepper-era John Lennon taking in the festivities. (John and Yoko had not then met.) The Floyd's performance at this show is not included, though.

The first of the tracks, "Interstellar Overdrive", runs for over seventeen minutes. It's a great rendition of the track, with lots of deep bass and a lot of guitar experimentation by Syd Barrett. It shows the studio recording, edited into footage of the day. Nick in particular looks very fresh-faced and youthful, but remarkably serious over his drumkit.

"Nick's Boogie" is a fascinating, atmospheric track, lasting around twelve minutes, held together with Mason's purposeful tattoo. Principally a two-hand performance with Syd, the footage of this track consists of a lot of slow motion, especially of people dancing at UFO, and activity at the 24 hour Technicolor Dream, alongside some intriguing studio footage that shows how Syd created some of the more unusual sounds.

Turning now to the presentation of the DVD, it is in 4:3 format (standard television shape, not widescreen), and you have two audio options - mono, or 5.1 surround sound. Due to the source material, the 5.1 surround is a pseudo-surround, which makes little use of the rear channels, simply piping a quiet mixdown to the rears, with a tiny amount of delay (presumably to give an impression of the sound bouncing off the rear walls of the studio).Turning now to the presentation of the DVD, it is in 4:3 format (standard television shape, not widescreen), and you have two audio options - mono, or 5.1 surround sound. Whichever sound mix you select, you get a nice, crisp, soundtrack, with deep, clear bass notes. A nice job has been done with it, especially considering the original source materials. With regard to the picture, it is good - clear, colours are well-defined and whilst there is a certain softness to the picture, it is nicely mastered and presented. The opening titles are pretty poor though - but this only lasts for a few seconds before the opening bars of Interstellar Overdrive appear.

The extras on the disc are almost 30 minutes of interesting interviews from the 1960s of Mick Jagger, David Hockney, Michael Caine, Julie Christie, and an overview by the director, Peter Whitehead. The interviews are very dated but fascinating all the same. The most interesting of these, is the interview titled "Peter Whitehead's overview", a four minute look at his long-term friendship with Syd Barrett, long before the Floyd were formed, and a look at how the two tracks came to be recorded and used in "Tonite Let's All Make Love In London".

A definite purchase for all fans of early Pink Floyd - where else can you find footage of the Syd Barrett line up recording in the studio? Picture quality is a marked improvement over the VHS version that was released some years ago, and the sound quality is very impressive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The DVD will be available from September 12th in the UK and Europe, and October 4th in the US. The special US edition will also include a bonus audio CD featuring Nick’s Boogie (11:50) and Interstellar Overdrive (16:46), as heard on the recent Pucka Music release. Advance orders are already being taken through the following special links: Amazon.com (USA/international), Amazon UK, and Amazon Germany. We should have ordering details for other countries shortly.

Back Against The Wall

Artist: Various
Title: Back Against The Wall (2 CD Set)
Genre: Progressive Rock
Label: Purple Pyramid
Pink Floyd Website

You cannot downplay the importance and sheer brilliance of Pink Floyd’s masterpiece The Wall. The tribute albums have come and gone, some were good and some forgettable. Back Against The Wall is a phenomenal tribute that I think the creators of the original recording will find most pleasing.

As they say in England-Bloody Hell! This is magnificent…I am gob smacked! When you assemble some of the most recognizable names in classic and progressive rock, well, actually some of the more important artists in the history of recorded music, how could it possibly not be a great recording and make an impact? Just look at the credits, its overwhelming. Ian Anderson, Tony Levin, Steve Howe, Tommy Shaw, Ronnie Montrose, Rick Wakeman, the list goes on and on. Every contributor to this project has earned a multitude of respect over the years.

This is the closest thing to the real deal as you can get. The vocals are similar to how Roger Waters and David Gilmour sounded in their prime, and the musicianship is most notable. Every song kicks some major ass, period. It is difficult to put it any other way actually. In a sense, The Wall paralleled the Dark Side Of The Moon in success (years on the charts) and originality. I know Waters was given most of the credit for this album, but let us not forget that Pink Floyd was a band and they are the ones that went to the studio every day to record this, even if it was one person’s brainchild, it took a group of people to make an album such as this. Now in one of the most stunning grouping of musicians worldwide we have a reenactment of one of the most important albums of our time.

I think it would be quite unfair to all involved to cite any particular tracks as being the best; they were all outstanding, beyond my greatest expectations. After a few songs, it makes you feel like you are listening to the original recording all over again. I would think that is whole idea behind this, it is a tribute to Pink Floyd. Each musician has their time to show their appreciation in each song to a band that helped shape their own music. It is obvious that a lot of heart and soul went into this and the sound is clear, full, and powerful-everything that Pink Floyd was when they produced an album.

Now if this is not enough, they are planning to take this thing on the road. I cannot imagine how fantastic this will be if some of the very same musicians pack up their gear and present these songs in a live setting. It will not be like Pink Floyd live, but just the same, I am sure it will be immensely enjoyable, just like this recording has been. Surely all rock and progressive rock fans will be delighted with this set. A tribute album cannot get any better than this-it is a perfect 10.
