Queen defy plea to scrap Rome gig

Rock band Queen went ahead with a gig in Rome on Monday despite a plea to cancel out of respect for the Pope.

Queen are on tour with former Free singer Paul Rodgers in place of Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991.

Before the show, Guido Bertolaso, who is overseeing Rome's arrangements for Pope John Paul II's funeral, said it would be "in very bad taste right now".

Queen said the show took place "after consultation with local authorities" and they observed a minute's silence.

Although a fan of the group, Mr Bertolaso said: "I think that in this moment of pain and prayer, a concert should not be held in our capital - with all due respect to what others believe."

The government-appointed commissioner for the Italian capital's funeral arrangements added the group turned down requests to postpone the show at the Palalottomatica venue.

A statement from the group said: "After consultation with local authorities, promoter Barley Arts decided the concert should go ahead. Band opened concert with a minute of silence."

All Italian sporting events, including Serie A football matches, were cancelled at the weekend, as was campaigning for Italian regional elections.

And the Italian cinema box office slumped 37% over the weekend, according to film industry publication Screen Daily.

Rome film complex La Casa del Cinema postponed a screening of The Exorcist: The Beginning and a related debate that had been scheduled for Tuesday, Screen Daily reported.

QUEEN Guitarist Defends Decision To Play Rome - Apr. 6, 2005

The Associated Press is reporting that QUEEN guitarist Brian May is standing by their decision to play Rome, even as the city mourns Pope John Paul II.

QUEEN and guest vocalist Paul Rodgers played a show in Rome on Monday.

But according to the British Broadcasting Corp., Italian authorities had asked the band to postpone the show out of respect for the pope.

The band played anyway, opening the show with a minute of silence, and Tuesday justified the move to play on his Web site.

"You have to understand that music is our lives — to be asked not to play music on a day of mourning is like being asked not to breathe," May wrote. "I sincerely hope that when I die people will feel they can sing and dance and do everything that comes naturally to them."

May said in his post that he wasn't trying to say he's more "important than anyone else."

"We are all just God's creatures, every one of us; birth and living and death are with us every day," May wrote. "In my view we must all act according to our own consciences and beliefs, so long as they don't hurt anyone else."

May added that if there were laws to not play on specific days in specific countries, that would be a different matter and he would honor them.

The guitarist thanked his fans for showing up and the concert. He said they meant no disrespect to the pope, but they also did not want to disappoint the QUEEN fans who had waited years for them to tour again.

"The thought of disappointing those 9,500 QUEEN fans after 20 years was too much," May wrote. "As you may have heard, we had a minute's silence in respect to the Pope's passing, and I dedicated 'Love of my Life' to those dear to us whom we are missing, to give an opportunity for the people in the audience to explore their own feelings, whatever they might be."

'RHAPSODY' IN BLUE!

THE FLAMING LIPS have tackled QUEEN’s classic ’BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ for an upcoming covers album.

The band took time out from working on the follow-up to 2002’s ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ to record their own unique version of the operatic rock standard.

Singer Wayne Coyne told NME.COM: “There’s this covers album with a bunch of different bands recording versions of Queen songs. No-one wanted to do ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. At first we didn’t either, but in true Flaming Lips fashion we decided to take on the behemoth that is ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. I think we did it justice.”

He added: “We took it to task, knowing that when people think of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ they think of this huge overblown thing with the weird vocal swirls and backwards bits going on. I think we nailed it and made it a little more intense and a little more sad. We put a big operatic flourish in the middle just to make it a little more Flaming Lips-ish.”

Coyne revealed that fans can expect The Flaming Lips new album, ‘At War With The Mystics’, in January 2006.

Не обошлось без сюрпризов. После Bohemian Rhapsody на сцену поднялись Peter Kay и Patrick McGuiness и начали исполнять импровизированную версию (Is This The Way To) Amarillo. Эта кавер-версия, записанная Питером Кэем, уже несколько недель занимает 1-ое место в британском чарте синглов, а в клипе на песню снялись Брайан с Роджером. Песню подхватил весь зал, а затем к ним присоединился и Брайан. После этого впервые за это турне была исполнена Under Pressure, на вокале в основном был Роджер. Также в аудитории были замечены Fish и Michael Falzon (Ex-Galileo).
Отсутствует Little Bit Of Love, вместо Seagull - Wishing Well, не было Feel Makin' Love - вряд ли кого-то это расстроило :)))

Состоялись ещё 3 концерта группы Мэя, Тейлора и Роджерса. Естественно sold out.
6 мая в Бирмингеме на NEC Arena впервые в этом туре была сыграна Another One Bites The Dust! На вокале Пол. В сет-листе она стоит после Fat Bottomed Girls. И снова была Under Pressure с вокалом Тейлора! Роджер был в ударе...)))
7 числа в Кардиффе The Show Must Go On сменила Under Pressure и исполнялась перед Bohemian Rhapsody, вернулась Feel Like Making Love - в сет-листе после Hammer To Fall, Another One Bites The Dust переместилась на бис.
И самое грандиозное - вчера в славном городе-герое Шеффилде. В первую очередь, этот концерт записывался для выпуска DVD! (в сентябре?) Съёмочную группу возглавлял Дэвид Маллет - достаточно произнести такие магические слова как Under Pressure, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, чтоб вы узнали этого человека.

Стоит рассказать об окончании весенней части турне Мэя, Тейлора и Роджерса.
11 мая концерт прошёл в зале Wembley Pavilion в Лондоне. Многие фаны и сам Брайан очень отрицательно отзывались об этом зале. По сет-листу отличие с Шеффилдом только в том, что местами поменялись номера 7-10:

7-ой концерт британской части европейского тура Queen и Пола Роджерса прошел в Северной Ирландии, в Белфасте 13 мая. К большому удивлению в зал Odyssey Arena на приблизительно 10000 человек были проданы не все билеты. Тем не менее концерт был весьма успешным. Группа впервые за все турне исполнила Fire And Water - в сет-листе она заняла место перед барабанным соло (16 номер). Это был один из самых длинных сетов за весь тур, более 2,5 часов. God Save The Queen не была включена в конце по политическим соображениям.

Последний концерт весенней части европейского тура Queen и Пола Роджерса прошел в субботу 14 мая в Дублине, в небольшом зале приблизительно на 8 тысяч человек The Point. Сет-лист снова был таким, как и в Белфасте. Группа во второй раз исполнила Fire And Water, а во время гитарного соло Брайан исполнил часть из Cockles and Mussels. В один из выходов к краю подиума кто-то из зала зашвырнул на сцену парик, который был сразу же опробован на своей голове Роджером.

Я вот все жду не дождусь их нового альбома. Мне так их хочется услышать. На самом деле они классные. Я bad company обожаю а их первый альбом просто один из самых лучших в роке на мой взгляд.
