Loudness drove Cream to separate Loudness drove Cream to separate

October 20, 2005

Exactly what was it that caused the world's first rock 'n' roll supergroup, Cream, to break up some 36 years ago? It wasn't the drugs, it wasn't the women and it wasn't creative differences between the three legendary band members (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce). Things just seemed to be getting a little too loud.

Drummer Baker says in the December issue of Guitar World magazine: "From my point, it was the volume. It just got louder and louder and louder, and I didn't enjoy it anymore. I asked them to turn it down and they wouldn't. That's what finished for me."

Cream (Reprise)

Two and a half stars

The Cream reunion earlier this year was in ways even more improbable than the year's other major reconciliation, Pink Floyd with Roger Waters at Live 8. Neither means little more than nostalgia, except in Cream's case there's a hefty paycheck that anyone whose last name isn't Clapton can probably use at this point. The reunion of rock's second greatest power trio - Hendrix's Experience was more revolutionary - is pretty much what you'd expect.

Age plays a factor. Jack Bruce's exuberance is buoyed by a voice slowly ravaged by time. Ginger Baker seems to have occasional trouble keeping his energy and chops together. Eric Clapton has been in the adult contemporary mode so long, he resembles a shadow of his former God-like self even when he cuts loose.

Still, there are spirited performances, and the musicians can get powerful and inspiring. In general, Cream's original material ("Badge" "Sunshine of Your Love") fares better than the blues covers ("Spoonful," "Stormy Monday") throughout the two discs. Bruce's bottom line is rock-solid throughout, Clapton shows glimpses of greatness (although his sound is way too filtered for a once raw band), and Baker demonstrates what made him so inventive.

What a reunion like this also does is expose flaws that reverential history has erased. A glowing example for this trio is that the idea of supremely talented musicians shredding through blues classics is no longer novel; it's become a crutch. Also, music is a democracy but why include Baker's "Pressed Rat & Warthog" when "Tales of Brave Ulysses" is omitted?

It's probably not coincidental that "Royal Albert Hall" was released before Cream's shows at Madison Square Garden - the only U.S. shows announced so far - and the band's true believers wouldn't be deterred if this record was complete garbage. At the same time, it's not likely to add to the great trio's legacy.

Reunited Cream ready to rock the U.S.Reunited Cream ready to rock the U.S.
NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The rock supergroup Cream is excited to be reuniting again -- this time to play three shows in New York City.

"We're kind of in the same place at the same time," says Eric Clapton, who formed the group in 1966 with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Cream released four albums before breaking up in 1968.

"We were feeling like it would be good to do something worthwhile, not just leave that as a memory," Clapton adds. "When everyone was still available to do it, why not?"

Before this year, Cream's only public performance since breaking up was at its 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. The trio reunited for shows in May in England, which yielded the CD and DVD set "Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6 2005."

Cream will play Oct. 24-26 at Madison Square Garden. No other shows have been announced.

QUEEN OF ROCK AND ROLL
By Nathan Yates Royal Correspondent
THE Queen has a good knowledge of pop and rock music, her husband claimed yesterday.

Prince Philip insisted the monarch knew all about rock greats such as Eric Clapton.

He said: "Of course the Queen knows who Eric Clapton is. When she met him she knew exactly who she was talking to."

But the Duke of Edinburgh confessed he hadn't a clue about the guitarist.

Philip was giving a joint interview with Edward to mark the 50th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh awards. He also insisted he was not a difficult dad.

Edward did the award but Philip said he didn't force him into it. "I am not a demanding father. I didn't go pushing things."

GINGER BAKER COULDN'T HANDLE THE NOISE GINGER BAKER COULDN'T HANDLE THE NOISE

Sixties rockers CREAM split because drummer GINGER BAKER couldn't handle how loud the band were, he claims.

The group called it a day at their peak, 36 years ago, amid rumours of rifts within the group comprising Baker, ERIC CLAPTON and JACK BRUCE.

But Baker insists their music just got too loud: "From my point, it was the volume.

"It just got louder and louder and louder, and I didn't enjoy it anymore. I asked (Clapton and Bruce) to turn it down, and they wouldn't. That's what finished it for me."

ERIC CLAPTON - "So Tired"

Get up in the morning already yawning and I'm so tired
I Ain't had a wink of sleep seems like all week
We're So tired
The Baby's only feeding and one of them is teething
They're So tired
They get up before the dawn I don't know how we carry on
We're so tired

Thank God their mama is a natural
She knows exactly what to do
And as for me I think I'd go insane
I just wouldn't have a clue

You know we try to do our best
Just don't get no rest
We're so tired
Would do it all again you can bet your life my friend
But I'm So tired

Just can't wait til the sun goes down and all the kids have gone to bed
Trying to sleep you know but sleep won't come
With all the stuff goin through my head

Well its play group on thursday Music class on Friday, I'm so tired
And Now Mamas getting snappy
Daddy won't change no messy
And I'm so tired

Sometime I think I'll just go on to bed
I must have better things to do
When Its time to get my good night kiss
My dreams have all come true
Bomp ba da da da da da
So Tired

Supergroup issues 'Cream' of DVDs
By Scott Galupo
October 21, 2005

A few lucky thousands will see the reunited Cream at New York's Madison Square Garden next week -- its three dates there constitute the beginning and end of a North American tour. The rest of us must content ourselves with "Cream: Royal Albert Hall," a magnificent DVD document of the band's four-night residency last spring at the storied London venue where it bid its legendary farewell.
The supergroup whose very name suggested cocksureness already had a reputation to live up to when it formed in 1966. Quitting only two years later probably did as much to secure Cream's eminence as the trio's virtuosic musicianship: There was no long decline, no drift into irrelevancy, no embarrassing transition into the video age.
And, fortunately for the members of Cream, no premature deaths -- which is the main reason Eric Clapton felt compelled to reform the band: They're all still here.
The double-disc "Royal Albert Hall" (an audio set of the same name was released simultaneously on Oct. 4) knits together performances from each of the four May nights that Cream played Albert Hall, for a two-hour presentation that begins with one of the band's jauntiest songs, "I'm So Glad," and ends with its first hit single, "Sunshine of Your Love."
The video footage does everything it's supposed to. It captures the momentousness of a long-in-coming reunion. As the cameras swoop into and away from the audience (which on one night included the actors Jude Law and Sean Penn), you can practically feel the electricity under your feet. (There are also humorous interruptions that show various venue employees who couldn't care less.)
It reveals how each of the principals looks (Mr. Clapton, fit and fatherly; singer-bassist Jack Bruce, ragged; drummer Ginger Baker, ravaged) and how they sound (excellent).
Wisely, Cream avoided wizened psych-rockers such as "I Feel Free" and "Strange Brew" ("Tales of Brave Ulysses," with its descending doomsday riff, would have been nice, though) and, instead, stuck to its hard bluesy English roots with renditions of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' and Tumblin'?" and Blind Joe Reynolds' "Outside Woman Blues," plus an aching take on T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday," into which Mr. Clapton (on lead vocals) digs with soulful precision.
Slowhand slows down Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" (his blistering solo on Cream's cover version on the "Wheels of Fire" album assures him a high place in the pantheon) to a more comfortable, midtempo shuffle -- but still not as slow as Johnson's doleful original.
Mr. Bruce's definitive vocal on "Born Under a Bad Sign" is still frighteningly exact, as is the menacing, back-and-forth riff he carpentered for "Politician."
Mr. Baker, one of the greatest and most influential drummers of the rock era, turns in the inevitable epic drum solo "Toad," which impresses heavily, even as it reminds you of the ghastly trend it started. He also chews on "Pressed Rat and Warthog," a spoken-word oddity from "Wheels of Fire" that is all the more endearing for his nervousness in delivering it.
If I have one quibble (warning: it's a technical one), it's how -- there is no other way to put this -- Stratty Mr. Clapton's guitar sounds. By Stratty I mean Slowhand's exclusive use of Fender Stratocasters, which he didn't take up in earnest until his time in Derek and the Dominoes. Cream loses some of its distinctive muscle here because of the relentless twang of Mr. Clapton's favored ax.
In the interview section of the DVD bonus features, Mr. Bruce mentions how assiduously the band steered clear of nostalgia exercises. In rehearsals, the band experimented with some of the vintage gear it used back in the day -- and then thought better of it.
That's admirable. But why shouldn't here-and-now Cream reproduce the indispensable wah-pedal effect on "White Room?"
A bemused fan, who will shortly return to his basement to bang out Cream guitar riffs, wants to know.
