GILMOUR'S MAKES THE AUDIENCE SMILE Pink Floyd frontman David Gilmour was joined on stage by some famous friends on the first night of his sell-out concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. The 62-year-old rocker and his five-piece band made sweet music with David Bowie, David Crosby, Graham Nash and Robert Wyatt. Gilmour's three day concert coincides with the launch of his third solo album On An Island and his new single Smile will be released on June 5th following the 5-date UK solo tour of the UK which takes place in Manchester, Glasgow and London. All dates sold-out in just a few hours and led to an additional date being added at London's Royal Albert Hall making three consecutive nights on 29, 30 and 31 May. Plans have also been confirmed to film two of the London shows for release on DVD later this year.

Last night's first of three Royal Albert Hall sell-outs made the reunion more distant still. As Gilmour and his five-piece band (including Wright) triumphantly rattled through On An Island - certainly the finest album released in 2006 by a 62-year-old multi-millionaire - and a few Floyd stalwarts and obscurities, the message was clear: he no longer needs Pink Floyd. As if to confirm a return to showbusiness, there were guest appearances from David Bowie, David Crosby, Graham Nash and Robert Wyatt.

He partially sidestepped the issue last night, doing a sterling job on Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here, but mainly delving into post-Waters material such as the genuinely moving Coming Back To Life and duetting with Bowie on the magical closer Comfortably Numb, although after over three hours, I was more numb than comfortable.

The ovation was standing, the sense of occasion genuine and the feeling that Gilmour is winning the battle of Pink Floyd hard to ignore: at least until July, when Waters brings his show to town.

Then came a show-stopper that instantly brought the whole hall to its feet. A grey-suited David Bowie strolled on to supply a beautifully apt mockney lead on the Floyd's first single, Arnold Layne. As the lights went mental, and Bowie and Gilmour duetted on Comfortably Numb, a patchy show miraculously pipped Pink Floyd for drama in the end.

As if such theatrical and musical splendour were not enough, David Bowie then arrived to perform an encore of Arnold Layne and to share the vocal with Gilmour on Comfortably Numb, bringing the curtain down on a show that not only echoed, but surely rivalled, the glories of Pink Floyd themselves.

David Bowie makes surprise appearance in London

The star sings some Pink Floyd classics

David Bowie stunned fans by making his first appearance on a UK stage in nearly two years last night (May 29) at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The singer, who has been relatively quiet since undergoing emergency heart surgery in summer 2004, came on as a surprise guest during the encore at former Pink Floyd man David Gilmour's first of three sold-out nights at the venue.

Long time Floyd fanatic Bowie received a standing ovation after performing classics tracks 'Arnold Layne' and 'Comfortably Numb'.

Bowie last played the UK in June 2004, at the Isle Of Wight festival.

Other guests on the evening included David Crosby and Graham Nash, who sang on the title track of Gilmour's recent UK Number One album 'On An Island' as well as 'The Blue', Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' and their own 'Find The Cost Of Freedom'.

Meanwhile long time collaborator Robert Wyatt also dropped to reprise his role from the recent album, playing cornet on 'Then I Close my Eyes'.

Gilmour plays another two nights the venue - tonight and tomorrow (May 30/31).
