A Meissen porcelain figure of a Map-Seller
circa 1745
from the Cris de Paris Series, modeled by J. J. Kändler and Peter Reinicke, holding an unfurled map of Herzogthum Schlesien in his right hand and an oval box under his left arm, a chest of drawers and a bedroll on his back, faint crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue.
height 6 1/2 in. 16.5cm
This figure is from the first series of Cris de Paris figures modeled after the first page of the third edition of 'Etudes prises dans le bas Peuple ou les Cris de Paris' (1738), engraved by the Comte de Caylus after Edmé Bouchardon and the model is recorded in Reinicke's work book in October 1744: "1 Tyroler, einen Tabulet-Kasten tragend mit Bildern in der Hand, 9 Zoll hoch, in Thon bossiert".
The map represents the former Duchy of Silesia, now Wroclaw, Poland.
