’Dark Magus’ by Miles Davis' Son

Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis by Gregory Davis with Lesley Sussman is scheduled for publication in November, 2006. As told by his son, this book strips away the public perception of Davis-often based on books written without such intimate access to the man-and gets down to the realities of his personality, his relationships, and his many quirks.

Dark Magus details this enigmatic superstar's Jekyll-and-Hyde behavior: his swings between sobriety and prodigious drug use; his tender family moments and his destructive selfishness; his search for marital stability and his obsession with young women; his exalted musical talent and his ever-present personal demons.

Containing many never-before-seen family photos, this sometimes-shocking tell-all traces Miles Davis's life as seen through the eyes of the person who was closest to him for many years. As jazz star Clark Terry notes, "This book is a brilliant and engaging revelation of Miles's character through the recollections of his oldest son. It's a book about a legendary musician who was one of my closest friends and a book that's second to none." As he recounts the successes and scandals of Miles Davis's life, the author delves into Davis's relationships with artists such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and John Coltrane; his role as a mentor to young musicians; his obsession with sports; the ups and downs of his career and its affect on his family; and the family's turmoil over his final will.

Gregory Davis is the eldest of Miles Davis's four children. Born in 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory traveled extensively with his father from the time he was around 11 years old. During Miles's fusion period, Gregory served as his father's assistant road manager and bodyguard. Gregory, who is also a trumpet player, graduated from Long Island University with a master's degree in psychology. He has four children and lives in New York City. Miles Davis inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk

Miles Davis was posthumously inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on the 15th Anniversary of his passing, amongst immediate family members and celebrated friends and fans including popular jazz trumpeter, Chris Botti; Earth, Wind & Fire's Verdine White; respected bandleader, keyboardist and producer George Duke; Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Wallace Roney; Legendary drummer Lenny White (Bitches Brew); world-renowned drummer Ndugu Chancellor, and chart-topping saxophonist Mindi Abair among others.

Additionally, a personalized congratulatory greeting on DVD was sent by Diddy, who was unable to attend due to his conflicting promotional schedule. Diddy, a true fan, samples Davis on his new CD Press Play.

Written congratulatory statements were also received from 60 Minutes hard news journalist Ed Bradley, and critically-acclaimed rock legend Carlos Santana, who is featured on the new Davis release – Cool & Collected.

Immediate Davis family members including son Erin Davis; daughter Cheryl Davis; nephew Vince Wilburn, Jr., and brother-in-law Captain Vincent Wilburn, Sr. (RETUSA), were on hand to unveil the bronze bust of Miles Davis, which will reside on RockWalk's posthumous wall alongside Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson and legendary concert promoter Bill Graham among others.

Davis, an internationally renowned music icon is still widely regarded as one of the most innovative, influential and highly respected figures in the history of jazz – even 15 years after his passing in 1991 at age 65. His innovative style defined the evolution of the genre, and many argue that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't around to push it forward.

The eight-time Grammy Award winner, who was the sole jazz artist to be inducted into the 2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has enjoyed a "milestone" year. His 80th birthday on May 26 was commemorated with the release of the ultimate Concord Records 4-CD box set featuring his original artwork; he will be honored by the legendary USC Marching band with a nationally-televised "Tribute To Miles" during their sold-out homecoming game on November 11, and a special remix project entitled Evolution Of The Groove, featuring Santana and Nas, and produced by Sony/Legacy executive Steve Berkowitz and Vince Wilburn, Jr. is set for release early next year. Additionally, mtvU is basing a segment around the cultural significance of Miles Davis, and Golden Globe winning actor Don Cheadle will portray Davis in a forthcoming biopic. Sony Legacy also recently released Cool & Collected featuring 13 career-defining classic recordings spanning 1956-to-1984 in paying tribute to the 15th Anniversary of his passing.

Hollywood's RockWalk is the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring artists and other musical innovators who have made a significant and lasting impact and contribution to the growth and evolution of music.

Bitches Brew To Be Recreated Onstage

Miles Davis' seminal fusion album, Bitches Brew will be performed in its entirety at New York's Merkin Concert Hall, 129 W. 67th St., on Dec. 9.
Saxophonist Bob Belden, who has helped Columbia Records with its Davis reissue program, will lead the performance with his group, Animation. Trumpeter Tim Hagans, keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matthew Garrison and drummer Zach Danziger will also be part of the group. In a nod to musical trends that emerged years after Bitches Brew was recorded in 1969, DJ Logic and DJ Kingsize will perform with the band on turntables.

Майлс Дэвис стал фаворитом рейтинга джазовых записей

Три композиции трубача Майлса Дэвиса (1926-1991) вошли в десятку лучших джазовых произведений всех времен по версии слушателей радиостанции theJazz.com. Все пьесы были записаны на одной пластинке - "Kind of Blue".

Второе место в рейтинге занял саксофонист Джон Колтрейн: поклонники отметили две его вещи. Результаты опроса публикует газета The Independent.
В рейтинге упоминается только один ныне играющий музыкант - 27-летний англичанин Джейми Каллэм (Jamie Callum), играющий мягкий фортепианный джаз на стыке с поп- и рок-музыкой. Слушатели theJazz.com отметили заглавную композицию с его пластинки "Twentysomething" 2003 года.

Complete On the Corner Sessions [BOX SET]

The Complete On the Corner Sessions, is the eighth and final deluxe box set in the Miles Davis Series. It is due to be released by Columbia Records on September 25, 2007 in the U.S.A. and October 8, 2007 in the U.K..

Columbia records has released a series of ten box sets containing recordings from the 1950s to the 1970s. These contain material not available on other Columbia albums. Following on from The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions; The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions; The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions; and The Complete Cellar Door Sessions the latest release takes a look at the funk/ Jazz fusion album that would have a strong influence on hip-hop in the late 1980s, especially on the Beastie Boys. The album was Miles' electronic twist on what Duke Ellington called the “jungle sound.” His band was made up of musicians trained not in the basics of jazz, but on the new sounds of James Brown and Sly Stone.

The box set includes more than 6 hours of music. Twelve of these are previously unissued tracks. Another five tracks are previously unissued in full. They cover sixteen sessions from On the Corner, Big Fun, and Get Up With It until Davis's mid-seventies retirement. Miles is joined in these recordings by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, and many others. The 6-CD deluxe edition also contains a 120-page full-color booklet with liner notes and essays by producer Bob Belden, journalist Tom Terrell, and arranger/ composer Paul Buckmaster as well as rare photographs and new illustrations.

Сокровища Коламбии, вроде бы, закончились на этом боксе.

Как известно тот факт что Коламбия не поняла и плохо продвигала пластинку, был последней каплей после чего Майлз начал искать другой лейбл, видимо это также был один из фактов по которым музыкант ушел в пятилетний простой.
Бокс точно придется покупать. Но прайс на него суров $119.97 на Амазоне…
