No other band came closer to emulating the feedback-ridden autodestruction of the early Who than the Creation, who had a couple minor British hit singles in 1966 with "Making Time" and "Painter Man." The sonic resemblance is hardly surprising; the Creation were produced by Shel Talmy, who also produced the Who's earliest records, and lead guitarist Eddie Phillips was even asked by Pete Townshend to join the Who as second guitarist. Phillips' feedback freakouts were grounded by solid mod power chords and British Invasion harmonies. The Creation produced several interesting singles between 1966 and 1968, and although they achieved brief stardom in Germany, they never made it big in the U.K. Ronnie Wood was briefly a member before the group disbanded in 1968.

We Are the Paintermen

This was the only full-length album released during the brief life-span of the Creation, one of the few beat groups to rival the raw intensity of the Who. (Guitarist Eddie Phillips, who committed violin bow to guitar strings before Jimmy Page, was allegedly even courted by Pete Townshend to become the Who's second guitarist.) This album, released in 1967 on Hit-Ton, a label out of Germany, where the group enjoyed immense popularity (a situation not mirrored back home in the UK), consists of the singles and some uninspired choices of covers ("Cool Jerk," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Hey Joe"). The group's criminally under-appreciated sound is fueled by Phillips' clanging, melodic power chords and feedback-drenched squalls, which show up most prominently in the Creation's signature single, "Making Time." Other highlights on this essential album for fans of Mod and British Invasion include "Try and Stop Me," "If I Stay Too Long," "Biff Bang Pow," and "Painter Man." A 1999 Repertoire Records reissue cleaned up the poor sound quality of the original.

14-track compilation with all four of their singles, a couple songs that were actually recorded by an unrelated Scottish group of the time called The Mark Five (no kidding), and four Creation tunes, two of which are fairly rare (a cover of "Like A Rolling Stone" and the instrumental "Sylvette"). A real hodgepodge, but British Invasion aficionados will want to have the pair of 1965 Mark Four singles included here.

For too long, this skimpy eight-track collection was the only available CD by the Creation, cult heroes of the freakbeat scene. After the brilliant "Making Time" was used in the film Rushmore, several far-more-comprehensive collections were released, rendering Painter Man basically obsolete. However, the casual listener who only wants "Making Time" and perhaps a few more tastes of the Creation's art pop weirdness without too much expense or time will find it a suitable introduction. The brief set begins with the five single sides on which the Creation's entire reputation rests. "Painter Man," a sarcastic response to the Beatles' "Paperback Writer" that introduced the group's sonic trademark, Eddie Phillips' bowed guitar, is every bit as great a piece of artsy power pop as the Who's "My Generation." (The single's flip, "Biff Bang Pow," is equally Who-like; little wonder that Pete Townshend reportedly tried to pinch Phillips as the group's second guitarist after hearing this single.) In comparison to these tracks and "Making Time," the groovy lite-psychedelia of the later singles "How Does It Feel to Feel" and "Life Is Just Beginning" is less unique, but just as appealing. A pair of uninspired Larry Williams covers add little to the canon, but the closing "Sweet Helen," a previously unreleased track apparently recorded by the group's final lineup in 1968, is a small gem of a lite-psych song, with dreamy verses leading into a driving, memorable chorus. Fans of the style are encouraged to seek out the more complete reissues, but this will suit the merely curious.

Our Music Is Red - With Purple Flashes doesn't improve on the definitive Creation collection How Does It Feel to Feel, nor is it any worse. Instead, it's a comprehensive, well-produced 24-track compilation that contains every one of the group's major songs, plus a couple of interesting covers, lesser-known singers and album tracks. Like How Does It Feel to Feel it offers a generous retrospective of the underappreciated Mod quartet and if you don't have that compilation, it's a worthwhile acquisition. If you already have that other excellent collection, Our Music Is Red - With Purple Flashes isn't necessary.

Complete Collection Vol.1 - Making Time
Along with its companion volume (Biff Bang Pow!), this collects everything available by the Creation: all of their officially released tracks, rare mono and stereo mixes, and a smattering of live German TV show appearances. General fans should continue to stick with Edsel's How Does It Feel to Feel, a well-chosen anthology of their best 20 tracks. However, a cult band such as the Creation tends to attract fans who do want everything, and this two-volume series is exemplary in that regard, although much of the rare material is slightly different stereo mixes, rather than entirely new versions. The most interesting rarities on this disc are the live TV broadcasts from 1966 (including covers of "I'm a Man" and "That's How Strong My Love Is," which they never recorded in the studio), and an entirely unreleased instrumental. It also has several of their most renowned official tracks ("Making Time," "Try and Stop Me," "How Does It Feel to Feel," "Nightmares"), and the package is made more enticing with extensive liner notes by Mike Stax.

Complete Collection Vol.2 - Biff Bang Pow
Together with its companion volume Making Time, this 20-track disc collects everything by the Creation. It's just as worthy as the first installment, featuring several of their most well-known tunes ("Painter Man," "Biff Bang Pow," "Life Is Just Beginning," "Through My Eyes") and a bunch more alternate stereo mixes. Tracks such as "Sweet Helen," "Like a Rolling Stone," and the instrumental "Sylvette" have been hard to find over the years, although they don't rate among their better efforts. There are also a couple of German TV show performances circa 1967 of "Painter Man" and "Try and Stop Me." By the way, the two Complete Collection discs don't have the rare mid-'60s singles by the Mark Four (who evolved into the Creation), some of which were quite good; for those you'll need to look for Eva's The Mark Four/The Creation.

Red With Purple Flashes: The Creation Live [DVD]

The Creation eventually became one of the best-loved cult bands of the 1960s, but this DVD of two reunion shows from the mid-'90s is inevitably going to be at least something of a letdown, considering the inherent impossibility of recapturing the excitement of the group's '60s peak. Actually, the band sounds surprisingly good, and reasonably close to the sound of its old records, though with the passage of several decades, it would be impossible to recapture the freshness of the Creation's original incarnation. The first five songs on this nearly two-hour disc are from a reunion show at the Mean Fiddler in London on July 6, 1993, and while it's no great shakes visually — just a straight video document of a club gig — the group (original lineup intact) comes off reasonably well. Those five songs are broken up by super-brief interview segments with bandmembers, and it might have been better to build the rest of the DVD around those Q&As (if there was enough interesting footage) than a second reunion gig. For the bulk of the program is devoted to a subsequent show with the same personnel, again at the Mean Fiddler, on August 22, 1995, and it suffers from major problems. Most annoyingly, the vocals are poorly miked and/or recorded, and pretty overwhelmed by the music in the mix, though it's not just the sound balance that's the culprit, since the crappy fidelity renders singer Kenny Pickett's between-song announcements downright indecipherable. Unfortunately, the criticisms don't stop there, as the camera work is sometimes unsteady. Combined with the grating audio, it makes the segment a chore to watch — and this 16-song segment comprises most of the content on this DVD. It's a shame, as if done with mere competence this would have been a respectable record of the reunion, the Creation running through much of their slim recorded repertoire (as well as covers of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" and "Batman," and a couple of songs from the group's 1990s reunion recordings). Eddie Phillips periodically whips out his heralded bow to play his guitar once in a while (also playing his axe with a mike stand at one point), marking the visual high points of this collectors-only document; Pickett also does some pop-art spray painting as he did in the Creation's mid-'60s concerts, though those antics are less exciting.

Мне кажется, что в 66-68 годы их вещи были вполне на уровне лучших британских групп. Жалко, что они так мало продержались и были больше известны на континенте. Несмотря на ограниченность их каталога - по компиляциям гуляет всего около 25 песен - он очень качественный, как каверы, так и свои вещи. Есть классное видео с ними на германском Beat Club, где они устраивают перформанс под свой хит Painter Man.

Hey Joe первый кавер (по крайней мере, первый широко известный кавер) сделала американская группа The Leaves. Это была быстрая версия, и их аранжировку тут же слямзили The Byrds и Love. Хендрикс же сделал медленный кавер.

У Creation версия похожа на хендрисовскую, вот и интересно, кто у кого позаимствовал музыкальные идеи...

По-моему, Хендрикс был первым в этом плане.

Ну конечно, The Who, с которыми Creation соперничали за влияние на распадающуюся мод-тусовку. Типичные таунсендовские рифы можно услышать у них и в Making Time, и в Try And Stop Me и даже в Painter Man. Вообще, мне не кажется это большим преступлением, песням это ничуть не вредило. А что касается Biff Bang Pow, то вступление взято прямо с My Generation. ну и пусть, песня-то хорошая.

А что касается Younger Girl - Creation ее по-моему не исполняли. Из английских групп ее играли The Knack, из американских у меня есть вариант Lovin' Spoonful. Кстати, не в тему - на сборнике The Heart Beats & Other Texas Girls Of The 60s есть "женский" вариант этой песенки - группа Friday and the Girls записала ее как Older Boy :-). В остальном - песня ничем не выдающаяся.

Creation c Who особо соперничать не могли...насколько я помню, у первых и альбома на родине при жизни не вышло, а только в Германии. Они в "третьем дивизионе" прозябали.

-Вы, наверное, правы: песни "Younger girl" у Creation не было. Я, видимо, спутал название группы с похожим - Creatures (а скорее всего, Critters). Было это лет 35 назад, память вот и подвела. Да и слушал я ту песню сквозь помехи коротковолнового радиоприемника. Так что прошу извинить за то, что навел тень на плетень.

This group evolved out of The Mark Four, which featured Phillips, Pickett and Jones, with John Dalton on bass. The Mark Four recorded four singles, which are now very sought-after, primarily because they were the first recordings by this personnel. When Dalton departed to join The Kinks, Bob Garner joined from Tony Sheridan's Band as a replacement.

The group then changed their name to The Creation and had two minor UK hits with Making Time, which reached No 49 in July 1966 and Painter Man, a No 36 in November 1966. Both featured fine guitar work from Phillips who was the first musician to use a violin bow on his guitar. Both were reissued on a double-sided single in 1973 and 1977. They appeared at the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream in London's Alexander Palace in May '67.

Kenny Pickett now left the group for a while. Bob Garner took over on vocals and Kim Gardner (from The Birds) came in on bass.

After Planet folded they switched to Polydor for whom they released four further singles. All of The Creation's singles are sought-after.

The Creation made far more impact on the Continent, where two albums were issued, than in the UK. Both albums are good, containing many of their singles and other strong material such as Hey Joe, Nightmares and Can I Join Your Band?:-

In 1968, Ronnie Wood (later of The Faces and Rolling Stones) replaced Phillips on guitar, although later that year the whole group disintegrated. They made a further single, For All That I Am/Uncle Bert, which was not released in Britain, before splitting in the Summer of 1968. Both of their Continental albums are extremely rare, particularly copies of We Are Paintermen. However, for the less affluent, there have been a number of compilations, and any of these will serve as a good introduction to the band.

The Creation were rather special and this explains collectors' interest in them. They were innovative and talented. Pickett's vocals were powerful, Phillips' guitar work was inventive and they composed some excellent songs. They were a theatrical live attraction, too, Pickett often sprayed aerosol paint onto a white screen and burnt it. It is surprising that the success they achieved on the Continent eluded them here - perhaps they spent too little time in the UK.

After they split, Kenny Pickett co-wrote Clive Dunn's 1970 No 1 Grandad! and was a roadie for Led Zeppelin. Gardner later became part of Ashton, Gardner and Dyke who had a 1971 hit with Resurrection Shuffle.

The Creation reformed in May 1987 and issued a single, A Spirit Of Love, backed by an update of their sixties hit, Making Time. They reformed again in the nineties (line-up Bob Garner, Eddie Phillips, Kenny Pickett and Jack Jones) issuing a live album, Lay The Ghost (Cohesion COCRE 1) 1993, which captures their excellent re-union gig at London's Mean Fiddler venue that year. The CD package comes in an LP-sized sleeve, with a pop-art poster and detailed liner notes by Kenny Pickett. The band also recorded a single Creation, in 1994 and started recording an album of new studio material in 1995. They've also did some further gigs and had a BBC Radio One session on 'The Mark Radcliffe Show'.

Sadly, Kenny Pickett, the band's much loved singer and principal songwriter died on 10th January, 1997.

Насчет саунда абсолютно согласен. Да и мелодии-цеплялки у них лучше выходили. Ху, по-моему, только за счет гитароразбивательного имиджа и отдельных социально-значимых композиций прославились больше

В курсе, что Бони М перепевали у Крейшен песню про художника? Очень, кстати, по-своему, неплохо. Еще бы: продюсером Бони М был барабанщик из британской фрейкбит группы Смоук, отнего же в репертуаре немцев песня "Мой друг Джек", бывший единственный крупный хит Смоук, 67-е, кажется, место.

Да нет почему? Иногда звучат как гаражники, но не на первом своем альбоме, а например на сборнике редкостей 50 minute Technicolour dream

Фрик-бит - это чисто британский термин, чтобы выделиться, показать, что они полностью "самостийные" и нормальный американский стиль "гаражный рок" ничего общего с этим не имеет, когда это, конечно же, чисто словесная казуистика. А так, если по-существу, у всех у них, Англия или США, ноги из одного места растут.
