On The Charts

1963
A Lennon/McCartney composition featured on the US chart for the first time when Del Shannon’s version of The Beatles’ first UK number one, “From Me To You” - they had given him the song to record when he toured the UK with them a few months earlier - entered the Hot 100.

1964
Roy Orbison topped the UK chart for the second time with “It’s Over”, a song he’d co-written with Bill Dees, and which had peaked at number nine on the US chart a few weeks earlier.

With the British Beat Boom in full swing, it was the first time in 46 weeks that a non-British record had topped the chart, since Elvis Presley’s “You’re the Devil in Disguise” in August 1963.

1966
Two days after going to the top of the British chart with “Paperback Writer”, The Beatles topped the US chart for the first of two weeks with the same record.

1977
Marvin Gaye topped the US chart for the third time for one week with “Got To Give it Up, Part One”.

The recording, which was recorded live at the London Palladium the previous year, had earlier peaked at number seven on the British chart.

1977
Following their first UK tour in five years, The Jacksons topped the UK chart for the first time for one week with “Show You the Way to Go”, their first hit on the Epic label since their acrimonious split with Motown two years earlier.

1983
The Police’s “Synchronicity” entered the UK album chart at number one for the first of two weeks.

It made them the only act to have four successive albums enter the chart at the top.

1983
Michael Jackson’s record-breaking 37-week run at the top of the US album chart with “Thriller” was interrupted after 17 weeks when the original cast recording of “Flashdance” went to number one for two weeks.

1988
17-year-old Debbie Gibson, who was still at high school and whose previous three singles, “Only in My Dreams”, “Shake Your Love” and “Out of the Blue”, had all been US Top Five hits, maintained her remarkable record when she topped the chart for one week with “Foolish Beat”.

It made her the youngest artist to write, perform and produce an American number one single.

1988
Bros, whose previous two singles, “When Will I Be Famous” and “Drop the Boy” had both stalled at number two on the UK chart, went to number one for the only time for two weeks with “I Owe You Nothing”.

1988
Van Halen topped the US album chart for the second time when ”OU812” went to number on for the first of four weeks.

2000
Kylie Minogue returned to the top of the UK chart for the first time in just over ten years when “Spinning Around” entered the chart at number one.

It was her fifth number one and 17th UK Top Ten hit single, including her duets with Jason Donovan and Keith Washington.

On This Day

1966
The last edition of “Thank Your Lucky Stars”, ABC’s Saturday evening rival to the BBC’s “Juke Box Jury”, and which was first broadcast in September 1961, was aired.

A feature of the show was the inclusion of the promotional film for The Beatles’ latest hit, “Paperback Writer”, which had gone to the top of the UK chart two days earlier.

There was speculation that the show’s demise was a result of the recent Musicians Union ban on mimed shows.

1966
The “Summer Spectacular” Concert, which had been held at the Cow Palace in San Francisco the day before, was repeated at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The show was headlined by The Beach Boys, and among the other acts on the bill were The Byrds, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Percy Sledge and Chad & Jeremy.

1967
The Beatles appeared on the live telecast of the worldwide television spectacular, “Our World”, singing “All You Need is Love”.

Among those who were in the Abbey Road studio and sang the chorus along with The Beatles were Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Marianne Faithfull, Eric Clapton, Keith Moon, Mike McGear, Jane Asher, Graham Nash and The Walker Brothers’ Gary Leeds.

The orchestra was conducted by former Manfred Mann guitarist, Mike Vickers.

The two-hour show, which was part of Expo .67, was seen by an estimated 500 million people in 26 countries on five continents.

1969
The Hollies recorded “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” at Abbey Road with still unknown session musician Reg Dwight (later better known as Elton John) playing piano.

1989
The 12-hour long “Liberty Show”, the largest show of its kind ever held in France, took place at the Hippodrome De Vincennes in Paris as part of the country’s French Revolution bicentenary celebrations.

Among the performers who took part were Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, The Gipsy Kings and Cyndi Lauper.

1999
The first of two mammoth open-air charity concerts organised by Michael Jackson - “Michael Jackson & Friends” - was held in Seoul.

The bill featured Jackson himself, Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross, Boyz II Men and Rod Stewart.

Jackson then flew to Germany for the second show which was held in Munich two days later and featured Jackson, Status Quo, Barenaked Ladies, Alan Parsons, Ringo Starr, Boyzone and The Scorpions among others.

1999
The Glastonbury Festival boasted the widest range of entertainment ever with over 300 bands, a wide selection of theatre, comedy and cultural events and more than 250 food stalls.

Performers included R.E.M., Manic Street Preachers, Fatboy Slim, Hole, Blondie, Al Green, Skunk Anansie, Lonnie Donegan, Marianne Faithful and Courtney Pine.

2000
18 years after the band’s original “farewell” tour, the surviving members of The Who - Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Roger Daltrey, with Ringo Starr’s son, Zak Starkey on drums - began another US Tour with a performance at the New World Music Theatre near Chicago.

2001
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ bass guitarist Howie Epstein and singer/songwriter Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, were arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

2004
The Glastonbury Festival raised funds of Ј1 million for Greenpeace, Water Aid, Oxfam and local good causes as well as an additional Ј100, 000 which was donated to the Sudan appeal.

A notable feature was a performance of The English National Opera which played to an audience of 15, 000.

Other performers included Paul McCartney, Muse, Oasis, James Brown, Joss Stone, Toots and the Maytals, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Black Eyed Peas, Sister Sledge, Television, Michael Franti and Spearhead.

On This Day
1966
Having just started their tour of Germany, Japan and the Philippines, The Beatles returned to Hamburg for the first time since their last appearance as relative unknowns at Hamburg’s Star Club in December 1962.

They gave two performances at the city’s Ernst Mercke Halle and enjoyed several reunions, notably with Astrid Kirchherr and Bert Kaempfert.

That night, John and Paul returned to the city’s Reeperbahn where they visited the clubs and renewed acquaintances with old friends.

1972
Filming began on location on the Francis Ford Coppola produced George Lucas movie “American Graffiti” starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard and Harrison Ford.

The film’s budget was $750 000, of which 12% ($90 000) was for the rights to the 25 rock .n’ roll hit songs on the film’s soundtrack

1973
Rolling Stone Keith Richard and his girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg were arrested at their home in Cheyne Walk, London and charged with possession of cannabis, a revolver and ammunition.

He was subsequently given a conditional discharge and fined Ј205.

1974
Sonny and Cher were divorced after 11 years of marriage.

1977
Less than two months before his death in August that year, Elvis Presley gave the last performance of his life when he appeared at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis with backing by the Joe Guercio Orchestra.

1992
Elton John and Eric Clapton gave the first of three sell-out concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium, sharing top billing on a bill supported by Bonnie Raitt and Curtis Steigers.

The show also featured a guest appearance by Queen’s Brian May.

It was John’s first public appearance since undergoing painful hair transplants.

1992
Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the end of The Cold War, and with concerns having moved from the threat of nuclear war to the environment, donations of Ј250 000 from the profits of the Glastonbury Festival were given to Greenpeace and Oxfam and not to CND as in the past.

In addition to Tom Jones, who made a surprise appearance at the, performers at the Festival included Carter USM, Shakespear’s Sister, Primal Scream, P J Harvey, Sawdoctors and The Levellers.

1996
Van Halen announced that lead singer Sammy Hagar had left the group.

It was generally anticipated that he would be replaced by the group’s original lead singer David Lee Roth, who had been invited to record a track on the group’s greatest hits album but, four months later, to the surprise of many, including Roth himself, former Extreme front man, Gary Cherone joined instead.

1998
The Glastonbury Festival was again hit by heavy downpours which turned the event into a mud bath.

Nevertheless, the event was a huge success and over Ј500 000 was raised for Greenpeace, Oxfam, Water Aid and local charity organisations.

American singer Tony Bennett was the guest attraction and other performers included included Blur, Primal Scream, Robbie Williams, Tori Amos, Pulp, Bob Dylan, Roni Size and The Chemical Brothers.

2001
A US court ordered Pony Express Records, who had released an album of Bruce Springsteen’s early recordings without his permission, to destroy its recordings.

2001
Michael Jackson finally finished work on his new album “Invincible” which was scheduled for release later in the year.

He had spent the past three years working on the project and it was believed that he had recorded and re-recorded around 50 tracks and scrapped all but 16 of them.

The project is believed to have cost Sony up to Ј21 million.

2004
57-year-old David Bowie underwent emergency heart surgery at the St. Georg Hospital in Hamburg, Germany to clear an “acutely blocked artery” after he’d fallen ill during a concert at the Hurricane Festival in Scheesel, Germany, complaining of a pinched nerve in his shoulder.

The remaining 11 dates of his scheduled tour had to be cancelled and he returned home to New York to recover.
