MARSDEN RUBBISHED BEATLES HIT

GERRY MARSDEN, frontman of 1960s rockers GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS, was given a sneak preview of THE BEATLES' chart-topping 1963 single I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND before it was released - but he dismissed the landmark hit as "terrible".

Late Beatle JOHN LENNON played the song to the YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE star when the two bands were touring together, and Marsden admits he was less than impressed by his pal's latest effort.

He recalls, "We were on tour together when John came into my hotel room and said: 'Gerry, here's our new song - I wanna hold your haaaaand.'

"But I said: 'That's terrible, John.' Just goes to show my knowledge in music!"

WHEN Merseymart & Star met Gerry Marsden, he asked to be interviewed in his new kayak as it bobbed about the Albert Dock.

The exuberant Pacemaker frontman was back on home turf to promote the 15th anniversary of The Beatles Story museum, which opened its doors in May 1990 and received this year's Best Visitor Attraction title in the Mersey Tourism Awards.

To mark the event, Marsden teamed up with Bill Harry, creator of '60s music bible Mersey Beat, for a presentation of gold discs for pacemaker classic Ferry 'Cross the Mersey and classic colour prints of Merseybeat covers.

Marsden said: "We never ever thought about getting out of Liverpool. The first gig we ever played outside the city was in Birmingham and it was a real culture shock, but I always love to get back here.

"The important thing about Liverpool is that it will always have a big heart."

Gerry continues to tour throughout the world, and with such a massive fanbase, it's gratifying to know that some have stuck with him for more than four decades.

He said: "Wherever I go in the world, at the gig, I'll recognise the same people, some have been coming to see me for years.

"The only difference is that they look the same and I've really aged and gone ugly.

"It's amazing they still come to see me."

* A new Living History audio tour is now on at The Beatles Story, with contributions from Sir George Martin, Sergeant Pepper artist Peter Blake, Paul McCartney, Brian Epstein and others.

В возрасте 66 лет умер барабанщик Gerry and the Pacemakers Фред Марсден, брат Джерри.

Hitting the top spot with their first three singles Gerry & The Pacemakers were a true Mersey Beat phenomena. They rivalled the Beatles in the heady days of that scene and had a huge following at home and abroad when Liverpool was the toast of popular music. Scousers through and through the band, headed by the inimitable Gerry Marsden enjoyed extraordinary success and in their EMI years from 1963 -1966 were as big as any of the home-grown talent. This 4 CD box set is the definitive collection of the band at its peak. It contains EMI 'Columbia' recordings from January 1963 until November 1966 and the hit singles such as How Do You Do It?, I Like It, You'll Never Walk Alone, I'm the One and of course Ferry Cross The Mersey .
