With great sadness, I have just received news from friend and journalist Dave Ling, that our old friend and the architect of our first 3 albums, including the wonderful Argus album, Derek Lawrence, has passed away. Derek left us yesterday at age 78.
I’ll always have great memories of him and our time in the studio together. He had an easy manner while keeping the firm hand of guidance on 4 spirited, young, headstrong men, full of opinions and ideas. He was a true mentor.
He had a great sense of humour, and also great knowledge of the music business both in the U.K. and on this side of the Atlantic. He really understood how it all worked, going way back to early rock & roll, which was where his roots lie.
As the original record producer for Deep Purple, Derek was the connector, the catalyst if you will, after my onstage jam with Ritchie Blackmore at the Dunstable Civic Auditoreum. Ritchie made the call to Derek and from there we got to speak with Don Shane at Universal City, which led to the launch of our recording career.
Wishbone Ash, and I’m sure that I speak for all the original members, will always be indebted to Derek for his production work on those first 4 iconic albums, Wishbone Ash, Pilgrimage and the jewel in the crown, Argus. After our stint, living in the USA, it was also a pleasurable experience to reconnect with Derek on the No Smoke Without Fire album at De Lane Lea Studios, Wembley.
Sincere condolences to all of Derek’s family and friends.
