John Lennon Austin Princess from ImagineJohn Lennon Austin Princess from "Imagine"

A black 1956 Austin Princess Limousine Hearse owned and used by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in "Imagine" (Joko, 1973). The interior features a black leather front bench seat; four custom airline seats (two rows of two, later mounted in back); steering wheel having coat-of-arms logo at center; odometer reading: 41158; finished burl wood dash board; silver plaque reading: "Arthur Mulliner Ltd./North Hampton." Exterior having black finish (most likely original); front and rear English and American license plates; English reading: "GNH 240," Californian reading: "EMAJIN," chrome fenders, luggage rack and hardware throughout. Also present is the London registration form having Lennon's signature as registered owner, stamped August 3 and 26, 1971 and a facsimile copy of a letter of authenticity.

This modified Limousine Hearse can prominently be seen in "Imagine" (Joko, 1973); a film created to promote Lennon's Capitol Records LP bearing the same name. The surreal, half-fiction footage features a day in the life of Lennon and Ono, composed to music of Lennon's "Imagine" album as well as Ono's avant garde "Fly" (Rykodisc, 1971). Lennon co-directed the film with Steve Gebhardt, who previously worked with the he and Yoko on "Ten for Two" (Vaughan Films, 1971) and the short film "Fly."

During the opening scene of the film, the hearse can be seen in an arial view as John and Yoko drive to their Tittenhurst Park residence in England. Shortly after the filming was completed, they would move to New York.

Beatles album waxworks to be sold Beatles album waxworks to be sold

<--- The wax heads were borrowed from Madame Tussauds in 1967

Three wax heads of The Beatles, made for Madame Tussauds and used on the cover of the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, are to be auctioned.
Auctioneers Cooper Owen expect the busts of John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison to fetch up to £80,000 when they are sold later this month.

Also included in the sale is a waxwork head of Sir Paul McCartney that was not used in the album cover photo shoot.

A bust of actress Diana Dors that was on the album cover is also being sold.

"The auction provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of definitive cultural history," a Cooper Owen spokesman said.

The Sgt Pepper album cover was designed by Sir Peter Blake (right)
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is regularly named among the best British albums and the cover has become an iconic piece of pop art.

Artist Sir Peter Blake used 62 photographic enlargements to create the backdrop for the album cover.

"Paul and John said I should imagine the band had just finished a concert, perhaps in a park," he once said.

"I then thought we should have a crowd standing behind them, and this developed into the collage idea.

"I wanted to have the waxworks of The Beatles because I thought they might be looking at Sgt Pepper's band too."

Stones rarity

The waxworks were borrowed from Madame Tussauds for the shoot, which took place at photographer Michael Cooper's studio in 1967.

Other items to go under the hammer at the auction will include The Rolling Stones' first recording contract, valued at between £15,000 and £20,000.

The sale takes place at Madame Tussauds in London on 27 October - two days before another Beatles-related auction.

The white suit worn by Lennon on the Abbey Road album cover and a hearse owned by the late musician will be among the lots on offer in Las Vegas.

Pop Ringo going ...Pop Ringo going ...
October 06, 2005

NEW YORK: A legendary print of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr by photographer Richard Avedon is set to go to auction next week.

US American photographer Avedon created the portraits of the Beatles in pop art style in 1967, when the band were at the height of their fame.

The set contained five prints – a portrait of each band member as well as a group picture of the band.

Avedon's work featured sharply focused, bluntly realistic portrait photographs in which he tried to show off his models' unique characteristics.

In the Beatles portraits, he used the famed technique of colourful solarisation, in which photosensitive materials were exposed to light for a long time, which resulted in his photographs having areas of shadow highlighted or darkened.

The print is set to be auction next week at Christie's.

Original Lyrics for John Lennon Masterpiece A Day In The Life to be Offered at AuctionOriginal Lyrics for John Lennon Masterpiece A Day In The Life to be Offered at Auction

Lyrics written 39 years ago -- Jan. 17, 1967 -- Bidding Opens Today

The original lyrics for what is considered one of the 20th century's most influential pop songs will be sold in a sealed-bid auction starting today, offered by fine arts auctioneers Bonhams. The two-sided page of handwritten lyrics for A Day In The Life, recently voted “Best British Song” by UK music critics, is considered potentially the most valuable musical manuscript composed in the 20th century to be offered at auction. The final selling price for this cornerstone of Rock history is expected to be in the seven-figures.

From the Madison Avenue gallery of Bonhams New York, the auctioneers announced today - on the anniversary of the date the song was composed - that written bids will be accepted for a seven-week period. The auction is to conclude at Noon EST on March 7, 2006 - the anniversary date of the "Fab Four's" first radio performance in 1962, on the BBC’s Teenager's Turn - Here We Go. Public viewings for collectors, institutions and fans will include Bonhams’ salesrooms in New York City, London, San Francisco and Los Angeles prior to the close of the auction. Details on the lyrics, the international preview tour and the sealed-bid auction process will be available online at www.bonhams.com/adayinthelife.

There is general agreement among music critics that one of the most outstanding accomplishments within the Beatles songbook is A Day In The Life, the Lennon/McCartney collaboration inspired the morning of January 17, 1967 as John Lennon read the Daily Mail. As the final track on the multi-platinum-selling album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in June of 1967 and considered one of Rock’s first and best concept albums, the work was voted “Best British Song” this past October in London's Q magazine by music critics who called the track "the ultimate sonic rendition of what it means to be British.”

The song has been referenced in nearly every chronicle of the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Bob Spitz, in his recent book The Beatles: The Biography, heralded the song as the group’s "most outstanding studio performance." Music critics Mark Herstgaard and Jack Kroll positioned the composition's towering accomplishment among the outstanding achievements of 20th century culture -- likening it to T. S. Eliot's The Wasteland and Picasso's Guernica.

According to Martin Gammon, specialist-in-charge of the sale at Bonhams, the original working draft of these lyrics in John Lennon’s hand “is undoubtedly the most significant Lennon manuscript to be offered at auction, and arguably, the most significant musical manuscript of the 20th century.”

Jon Baddeley, Group Director for sales of collectibles at the Bonhams companies, concurs, saying, “The greatest track on the Beatles’ most acclaimed album makes this original Lennon lyric one of the most highly prized musical manuscripts of all time."

The single sheet of handwritten lyrics apparently includes John Lennon’s first two complete drafts of his contribution to the song. An inspired Lennon began the draft at his home after paging through the morning paper, and then transcribed a cleaner composition in all capital letters on the verso, likely for use in the recording sessions which commenced two days later at Abbey Road Studios.

This historical rock artifact survived as part of the Estate of Mal Evans, the Beatles road manager. It was sold at auction in 1992, at that time acquired by a collector in whose family it has remained.

Rock critic Griel Marcus, writing about this manuscript for the Winter 2006 edition of Bonhams Magazine (available in February), perhaps sums it up best: "Nobody had ever heard anything like it; no one has heard anything like it since. That’s the first thing to remember about the Beatles’ A Day In The Life."

Baker sells off his McCartney momentosBaker sells off his McCartney momentos

Apparently, Geoff Baker, the ex-publicist of Paul McCartney, is selling off his McCartney autographed memorabilia on ebay. The winning bid for the above "letter" went for $1,525.00 US. More items will be listed soon.

Baker has written a book called "Rock Bottom" which is scheduled to hit stores in May. The novel is rumored to be a thinly disguised tell-all of his days with Paul McCartney.

Beatle's cast lends a hand to Bek's causeBeatle's cast lends a hand to Bek's cause

THE Beatles may have wanted to hold your hand, but now you can hold one of the Beatles' hands.

As part of Bek Devlin's World's Greatest Shave, she is auctioning off a signed George Harrison framed hand cast.

The cast, which comes with a certificate of authenticity (complete with pic of George doing the imprint), was taken in the Williams pits during the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1995.

The piece is number 8 of 500 and is a rare commemoration of the guitarist, who died in 2001.

The cast will be sold on eBay, with the auction concluding at 16:48:55 AEST April 1 (to be precise).

Bek's locks will come off during a glam ASMF cocktail party at The Advertiser's new home, Keith Murdoch House, on April 7. There are still tickets available for the event - have a look at the story on E-Type Jazz for booking details.

Lennon's schoolbook art up for sale

A 10-page school exercise book, bound in red paper and filled with the scribbles of a 12-year-old Liverpool boy, is expected to fetch ?100,000 at auction next month. The exercise book, somewhat grandly entitled My Anthology, is the work of John Lennon and includes doodles, drawings and poems said to have inspired some of the Beatles' greatest songs. One sketch is of the walrus from Lewis Carroll's The Walrus and the Carpenter, believed to have been the inspiration for the band's song I Am the Walrus. "He will always be remembered as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time," said Louise Cooper of auctioneers Cooper Owen. "But these sketches and poems paint a new picture of the creativity and passion that was rushing through his veins at such a young age. "The book includes 10 famous poems, including The Walrus and the Carpenter. That obviously led in his mind to I Am the Walrus. It is a very early link to that song. It shows how artistic he was. It is so colourful. He'd sit there at his desk and he'd be off daydreaming and writing poems." The book is not the oldest example of Lennon's belongings in the sale of rock memorabilia on April 19. Also being auctioned is his engraved silver christening bracelet. A devastating letter from Lennon and fellow Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr to Paul McCartney, which some Beatles experts believe led to the irrevocable split in the band, is another item in the sale.

John, George and Ringo wanted the group to be managed by former Rolling Stones manager Alan Klein, but Paul wanted Linda McCartney's father, Lee Eastman, to be manager.

"The others thought that would give Paul too much power within the band," Ms Cooper said.

How Lennon sailed yacht safely home and found his muse

A ship's log depicting a remarkable voyage in which John Lennon steered a yacht to safety amid a tropical storm is to be auctioned next month. The log is one of three lots which represent important moments in Lennon's life. It is to be sold alongside a school exercise book in which he showed his first recorded interest in Lewis Carroll's The Walrus and the Carpenter poem, and a letter signed with fellow band members George Harrison and Ringo Starr marking their managerial split from Paul McCartney. The 1980 sea voyage is especially significant because it marked an end of the former Beatle's 10-year writing block and led to his final solo album, Double Fantasy. Lennon, whose father and grandfather were sailors, had always dreamed of making an Atlantic crossing. When a visit to an oracle in South Africa suggested that the safest voyage would be in a south-westerly direction, Lennon decided to charter the 44ft schooner Megan Jaye and make for Bermuda. Just hours after leaving Newport, Rhode Island, the vessel found itself in the middle of a ferocious tropical storm and, one by one, members of the crew fell ill. When the final crew member, the ship's cook, also succumbed, Lennon lashed himself to the wheel and steered the vessel to safety. Upon landing in Bermuda eight days later, on June 11, 1980, he described how he had regained his courage 15 minutes into the tempest and began reciting old sea-shanties recalled from his childhood. He likened the cathartic experience to performing on stage.

"At first you panic, and then you're ready to throw up your guts but once you get out there and start doing your stuff you forget your fears and you get high on your performance," he said. Freed from his writer's block by the experience, he completed Double Fantasy just weeks before his murder in December 1980. The log, on which Lennon wrote the words "Dear Megan, there is no place like no were" includes a doodle of him sporting a beard and is expected to fetch more than ?20,000.

The auction also features a letter co-signed by Lennon, Harrison and Starr in which the three, seemingly fearful of McCartney's dominance in the band, formally reject management by the music lawyer Lee Eastman, the father of McCartney's wife, Linda.

Written in 1969, the single-page typed letter is expected to fetch more than ?70,000. It states that Eastman was "… not authorised to act as the attorney [sic] or legal representative of The Beatles or of any of the companies which the Beatles own or control …"

The most personal item reveals that Lennon was artistically gifted at a young age. The exercise book, which significantly is entitled My Anthology, was completed when Lennon was just 12 years old and contains 10 illustrations to poems - including The Walrus and the Carpenter.

"It reveals the inspiration behind the 1967 Beatles classic I am the Walrus,'' said Ted Owen, the director of acquisitions at Cooper Owen auction house. The exercise book is expected to fetch between ?100,000 and ?150,000 at the auction, which is due to take place at Madame Tussaud's in central London on April 19.
