French ban for speeding Clapton

Rock star Eric Clapton has been suspended from driving in France after being caught speeding at 134mph.

The 59-year-old was stopped by police after driving his Porsche 911 Turbo at 53mph above the speed limit near Merceuil in western France.

He was given a 750 euro (£515) fine and his UK licence was confiscated. A court will determine the length of his ban in France although he may drive elsewhere.

After his suspension Clapton posed for photographs with French police.

After paying his fine, Clapton left the scene in his Porsche - this time in the passenger seat with his secretary behind the wheel.

The 16-time Grammy Award winner will have to recover his driving licence through diplomatic means, police said.

In August, imprints of Clapton's hands and signature were installed in marble on Sunset Boulevard's Rockwalk in Los Angeles, which honours significant figures in music history.

Clapton's "Sessions For Robert J." to be released 7 December

On 7 December, Warner Brothers will release a CD / DVD entitled "Sessions for Robert J." The set contains film from Clapton's "Me & Mr. Johnson" recording sessions and interviews. Also included is additional material filmed at the time of the Crossroads Guitar Festival, in Dallas in June 2004.

On 7 December, Warner Brothers will release a combined CD / DVD package entitled “Sessions For Robert J.” This set is an audio / video companion to Eric Clapton’s “Me and Mr. Johnson” CD released earlier this year.

Recorded during tour rehearsals in London and Dallas, in Los Angeles and the Dallas warehouse where blues legend Robert Johnson made some of his final recordings, the CD features 11 tracks. The DVD is performance / documentary with 14 tracks from which the 11 CD selections are taken. Five Robert Johnson songs were not included on “Me and Mr. Johnson” - “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Terraplane Blues,” “From Four Until Late,” “Ramblin’ On My Mind,” and “Stones In My Passway.”

Clapton is seen performing the songs with his touring band, acoustically with Doyle Bramhall and solo as well as discussing Johnson and his influence.

EC to be featured in DVD releases by Wyclef Jean, Zucchero
On 7 December, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Wyclef Jean's "All Star Jam At Carnegie Hall". The 140-minute DVD was recorded at the New York City venue on 19 January 2001. The evening was a benefit for the Wyclef Jean Foundation, which funds musical education for inner-city youth. Eric performs a reggae-flavored "Wonderful Tonight" and a duet with Jean, "My Song." Other musical guests included Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Destiny's Child, and Charlotte Church. The entire cast is featured in the finale of "Guantanamera / Hot Hot Hot."

"Zu & Co - Live At The Albert Hall" was filmed at the London venue on 6 May 2004. Host Zucchero took over the venue on an off-night during Eric's 6 night stand during the 2004 World Tour. Musical guests include Ronan Keating, Dolores O'Riordan, Mousse T, Solomon Burke, Paul Young, and Cheb Mami. Eric performs "Hey Man" and "Wonderful World" with Zucchero. Cream's "Disraeli Gears" To Receive The 'Deluxe' Treatment And Expanded To 2 CDs
9 July 2004 -- Cream's seminal Disraeli Gears album from 1967 will receive the Deluxe Edition treatment on September 13th, adding a variety of bonus and live tracks. It had been scheduled for release a year ago, but put back while a search for unreleased live material for possible use on the set was made. Sadly, nothing came of it.

The new expanded edition will not only feature the original 11-songs, which included "Sunshine Of Your Love," "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" and "SWLABR", but will also feature five demos, an unreleased alternate version of "Blue Condition," and the outtake "Lawdy Mama." A second disc features the album in a mono mix and incorporates a selection of tracks from last year's BBC Sessions release.

The five demos -- "We're Going Wrong," "Hey Now Princess," "SWLABR," "Weird Of Hermiston," and "The Clearout" -- were all released on the 1997 Cream box set Those Were The Days.

Disraeli Gears was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic and was the must-have album in the Summer Of Love.

Cream, which was made up of Eric Clapton on guitar and vocals, Jack Bruce on bass and vocals, and Ginger Baker on drums, broke up in 1968 after two legendary farewell concerts at London¹s Royal Albert Hall. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993 where they played a short 3 song set. Although there was talk of a reunion, nothing came of it.

Influential guitarist and songwriter Eric Clapton is to be made a CBE at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old, who rose to fame in the Yardbirds in the 1960s, is being given the award for services to music as part of the New Year's Honours list.

The musician was a member of the band Cream before going on to have a successful solo career with songs such as Layla and Wonderful Tonight.

Clapton, who was born in Surrey, was made an OBE in 1994.

As a member of Cream, he recorded rock covers of blues numbers including Crossroads and Born Under a Bad Sign.

He then went on to record Layla under the name Derek and the Dominos, written about his first wife Patty Boyd.

But with his early success came an addiction to alcohol and heroin, with Clapton admitting he spent £1,500 a week on drugs and drank at least two bottles of vodka a day.

He conquered his addictions in 1982 with the help of a treatment centre in the Caribbean, which he continues to support through fundraising.

Tribute to son

He went on to have a string of successful albums under his own name, and his MTV Unplugged session sold more than 15 million copies in 1992.

But in 1991 his son, four-year-old Connor, died after he fell from the 54th-floor window of a New York apartment.

He went on to write the hit track Tears in Heaven as a tribute to his son.

Clapton married American Melia McEnery on New Year's Day, 2002.

Musician Clapton delighted by CBE

Influential guitarist and songwriter Eric Clapton has said being made a CBE at Buckingham Palace was the "icing on the cake" of his career.

The 59-year-old was given the honour by the Princess Royal as part of the New Year's Honours list.

He said that during his youth he would have rejected the CBE due to his "rebellious streak", but that he was now "grown up" enough to accept it.

"I think it is an important thing to be able to set an example," he said.

The musician was a member of the band Cream before going on to have a successful solo career with songs such as Layla and Wonderful Tonight.

Support for royals

He added that he felt his earlier anti-establishment views were "immature", and said: "To say 'I did this all my life because I loved it' and to be recognised for that in this part of my life is good.

"I remember when the Beatles gave theirs back. At one time of life I probably would have identified with that, but I don't now."

The musician, who was made an OBE in 1994, said he thought his honour was for his musical "tenacity", but also for his support for drug and alcohol rehabilitation programmes.

He also spoke of his support for the Queen and her family. "I am a real royalist too - I have the greatest of respect for the Royal Family. It is a great thing for me."
