Fresh Air from WHYY, January 15, 2008 - It's not often that you hear of a record company being destroyed by success, but that was the fate of one of America's most prominent blues, jazz, and soul labels, Vee-Jay Records. The music they recorded fell victim to legal problems after the label's collapse and has been unavailable for years, but now, Vee-Jay has launched a reissue program with Shout! Factory records. Vee-Jay: The Definitive Collection is a four-disc set that came out this past summer.

In 1953, Vivian Carter Bracken and her husband, James, borrowed $500 from a pawnbroker because they wanted to record a group they'd found in Gary, Ind., where they owned a record store. They took their initials, V and J, and Vee-Jay Records was born. Right away, they had success — so much so that they had to lease the record, Baby, It's You by the Spaniels, to another label for distribution. But it was a Top 10 hit, and by the time the group's second record came out a year later, the Brackens were on firmer financial ground and had a crossover hit on their hands.

Naturally, this attracted attention, so when a Chicago slaughterhouse worker named Jimmy Reed walked into their store asking to be recorded after being turned down by Chess, they did a session with him. The first record they put out by him went nowhere, but the second one was a Top 10 R&B hit.

With that, Vee-Jay was on the map. Another doo-wop group, the El Dorados, took off soon afterward with "At My Front Door," also known as "Crazy Little Mama," which was a Top 10 crossover hit, and the Brackens moved their operation to Chicago. There was talent all over the place, and Chess — which was located just across the street from Vee-Jay for a while — wasn't taking it all. Perhaps because Vivian had a radio background, she was able to get Ewart Abner, Chicago's top promotion man, to join her team. Convincing her brother, Calvin Carter, to become the label's talent scout was probably a bit easier.

While Chess continued to focus on blues, Vee-Jay knew there was something new happening, and in 1958, it discovered a group that not only recorded a Top 10 hit right out of the box, but also became deeply associated with Chicago for the next 40 years: The Dells.

If the Dells were a harbinger of soul music, the other group the label recorded that year was already making the transition. Jerry Butler and the Impressions made "For Your Precious Love," but soon went their separate ways. Butler stayed on to become another Vee-Jay hit machine. Not that the label gave up on classic doo-wop, recording one of the great cult masterpieces of the genre.

Nobody's quite sure what Sheriff and the Ravels are singing on "Shombalor," although there are references to chicken knees and Nazis along the way. Vee-Jay was also home to one of the last great doo-wop records, 1961's "Duke of Earl," by Gene Chandler.

By then, Vee-Jay was one of America's top labels, with a strong jazz catalog, some top gospel groups, and Jerry Butler, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and Betty Everett cranking out hit after hit. The first hint of disaster came in 1962, with their biggest record to date.

The Four Seasons hit "Sherry" was so big that Vee-Jay's owners found themselves without the money to pay for pressing more copies of the records, although the label stumbled along for a while. The worst thing it could have done would be to sign another hit group, but it did. And what a group: Capitol Records already had passed on the option to release The Beatles in America, but the Brackens jumped at the chance. "Please Please Me" and "From Me to You" both came out on Vee-Jay, followed by an album at the end of 1963. The Four Seasons and the Beatles both went to greener pastures, and Vee-Jay wound up in court, its day in the sun over.

Выкладывай, нечего стесняться. Посмотрим на него, какой лейбл, что и как.

Сегодна юбилей однако. Ровно 45 лет назад пластинка "Introducing the Beatles" была выпущена в Штатах.

"Beatles discographies have long listed July 22, 1963, as the official release date for Introdusing The Beatles. This is not correct. The original back cover of 25 Vee-Jay albums, including five that feature the brackets logo. Because the brackets logo did not make its debut until October of 1963, Introducing The Beatles could not have been issued prior to that time. This has led Beatles historians to conclude that the album was initially distributed in November of 1963. This is also incorrect. Поэтому первым альбомом Битлз вышедшим на американском континенте можно считать канадский альбом "Beatlemania! With The Beatles" (в Британии With The Beatles вышел 22 ноября), 2 декабря 1963 года.

When it issued the "Please Please Me" single in the United States, Vee-Jay Records signed a licensing agreement with Transglobal, an EMI affiliate that worked to place foreign masters with U.S. record labels, giving it the right of first refusal on Beatles records for five years.[3] As part of that agreement, Vee-Jay planned to release the Please Please Me album in the U.S., and received copies of the mono and stereo master tapes in late April or early May of 1963.[4]

Originally, Vee-Jay considered releasing Please Please Me as it appeared in England. A surviving acetate made by Universal Recording Corporation of Chicago, probably in May 1963, contains all 14 songs in the same order as on the UK album, with the title still listed as Please Please Me.[5] But in keeping with the American norm of a 12-song album, Vee-Jay chose instead to delete "Please Please Me" and "Ask Me Why" and change the album's title to Introducing... The Beatles.[6] Also, the engineer at Universal in Chicago thought that Paul McCartney's count-in at the start of "I Saw Her Standing There" was extraneous rather than intentionally placed there, so he snipped the "one, two, three" from Vee-Jay's mono and stereo masters.[7] Except for those deletions, the order and contents of the album were untouched, resulting in a U.S. album that bore the closest resemblance to a British Beatles LP until Revolver in 1966.[6]

Preparations for the LP's release continued in late June and early July 1963, including the manufacturing of masters and metal parts and the printing of 6,000 front covers.[8] But, despite the claims of many older books that Introducing... The Beatles was first released on 22 July 1963[9][10][11], no paper trail exists to suggest that the album was released at any time in 1963.[12]

After a management shake-up at the label, which included the resignation of company president Ewart Abner after he used company funds to cover gambling debts[13], Vee-Jay canceled Introducing... The Beatles as well as albums by Frank Ifield, Alma Cogan and a Jewish cantor.

Продолжим тему последним "битловским" альбомом, вышедшим на Vee Jay. Это "The 15 Greatest Songs Of The Beatles" VJ 1101. Этот альбом имеет только косвенное отношение к Битлз, т.к. не является их альбомом и песни представленные на альбоме исполняются не ими, а никому не известной группой The Merceyboys. Так что для коллекционеров этот альбом ценен только своим конвертом для оформления которого использовались фотографии Dezzo Hoffmann, а также очень малым тиражом - около 3000 проданных экземпляров.
Vee Jay Records, к началу 1965 года, уже потеряла права на песни Битлз и катилась к банкротству. Была надежда, что этот альбом выправит положение и рекламировался он, как альбом содержащий новые песни Битлз. Но обмануть публику не удалось. К тому времени свои издания вовсю продвигала Capitol Records. Альбом вышел в начале 1965 года и продавался крайне плохо даже среди бедных слоев общества. Задуманный обман не удался, но зато получился ещё один около битловский раритет. Некоторый интерес представляет, на мой взгляд смешные, посвящения Битлз, на обратной стороне конверта.

Выложу я, преодолев стеснение. Альбомы эти приобрел случайно, без всякой "подготовки". Информации почти никакой нет. Хотелось бы узнать что-нибудь об этих лейблах. Не подделка ли...

Это второй вариант Introducind The Beatles, с песнями Ask Me Why и Please Please Me (первый вариант был с Love Me Do и P.S. I Love You), вышел 24 января 1964 года. На срезе винил должен иметь номера матриц 63-3402 и 63-3403, рабочие номера 6307 и 6307Х. А так же логотип MR - Monarch Records.

Это подделка. Неаккуратный лейбл и текст. На лейблах Vee Jay, надпись The Betles никогда не печаталась ниже отверстия.

Значит, мой первый вариант, который на самом деле второй для Vee Jay - это пресс 64-го? Если так, то я очень рад.
А то что второй диск подделка - ничего страшного. Пусть будет. А я буду искать настоящий.
