For Taylor, A Day At The Races represents "a step ahead of our previous work. We tried to avoid over complication, sterility-we tried to get a more basic feel in."
Is Queen living down its reputation for studio fussiness? "Not at all," Taylor answers, "I think it's good to be fussy. You might as well make it as good as you can if you've got all the studio devices at your command. As long as the end result isn't clinical; as long as you maintain the feel of the music."

Tom Browne: Let's have some more music. Brian, let's take one of yours, one we're going to play from you in a minute is from "A Night At The Opera" and is called "Good Company". Which has a George Formby ukulele on it, and Trad-Jazz. Were you interested a lot in Trad-Jazz?

Brian: I can remember the Trad-Jazz boom, and I was very keen on a group called The Tempered Seven, who indeed were in fact a revival of the 20's arrangements for a Jazz band. That's the kind of thing I was going after on this track.

Tom Browne: Brian, we now come to your personal choice, which is half of one and half of another!

Brian: Yes I'm very greedy.

Tom Browne: Tell us what they're going to be.

Brian: Ok, this is going to bring us onto Jimi Hendrix, who I'm sure we could talk a lot about. I'd just like to play the beginning of a track called "A House Burning Down". The beginning of this is the most amazing, attacking beginning of a song that I've ever heard. It's the complete production job on the guitars and bass and drums. I've never heard anything like it.

Brian: And the other track is "And Your Bird Can Sing", which is a very simple and beautiful song which The Beatles did. There's a lot of Beatles in us I think. A lot of influence there, whether it be conscious or unconscious and that was one of the things I liked. A very simple song, very well done. And also a little bit of double tracking from George Harrison, I assume its George, playing the little figures that go around the vocals. That was an inspiration as well because one of my dreams was to be able to do multi-tracking guitar on records. At that time, it was unheard of to do double tracking. I could name about three instances to do proper harmonies with a rock sounding guitar and George Harrison was quite a pioneer because he had a go at it on this track.

AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING

A.K.: Another one of May’s songs on ‘A Night At The Opera’ which required some imagination was the track ‘39’. The feel was very folky, which was surprising for Queen but what about the lyric?

B.M.: It’s a science fiction story. It’s the story about someone who goes away and leaves his family and because of the time dilation effect, when you go away, the people on earth have aged a lot more than he has when he comes home. He’s aged a year and they’ve aged 100 years so, instead of coming back to his wife, he comes back to his daughter and he can see his wife in his daughter, a strange story. I think, also, I had in mind a story of Herman Hesse which I think is called ‘The River’. A man leaves his hometown and has lots of travels and then comes back and observes his hometown from the other side of the river. He sees it in a different light having been away and experienced all those different things. He sees it in a very illuminating way, cause I felt a little bit like that about My home at the time as well having been away and seen this vastly different world of Rock music. Totally different from the way I was brought up and I had those feelings about Home.
So usually the song, I think people generally usually won’t admit it, but I think when most people write songs there are more than one level to them. They’ll be about one thing on the surface but underneath they’re probably, even unconsciously, trying to say something about their own life, their own experience. I know in my own stuff there is something like that.
