Del. Seashore State Park hosts sand castle contest
Delaware Seashore State Park held its annual Sandcastle Contest July 13,
with 33 teams participating, including 21 teams in the 12 and under
category. Teams ranged in size from one to five members.
The contest got underway with registration at 9:30 a.m. Judging began about
12:30 p.m., with four judges evaluating entries based on skill and
creativity. Prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place winners
in each of the categories. Many clever and unique sandcastles and sculptures
were constructed, ranging from sea creatures such as fish, turtles, a
mermaid, octopuses, Sponge Bob Square Pants and a bass guitar with a tribute
to late rock musicians George Harrison and John Entwhistle, as well as
several traditional sandcastles.
The winners in the 12 and under category were: Madeline and Malachi Hoye and
Jackson Wagner, first place, for their patriotic American flag castle;
Justin Shelly, second place for a traditional sand castle utilizing a wide
assortment of natural materials collected around his home; and Sarah
Showalter, Alison Becker, Alyssa Eberly and Steph Shober, awarded third
prize for their sand rendition of Sponge Bob Square Pants.
In the open age category, first place was captured by Dennis Shelly, Kelly
Shelly and Justin Shelly, who created a sculpture of a large fish. Second
place was awarded to Roxanne Sebastian, Pam McGinley and Stacy Shober, who
created a patriotic sculpture featuring a bald eagle. Third place in the
open age category went to Kristy Longsdorf, Brian Wilson and Chris Becker
for the combination of a dolphin sculpture and a castle in the shape of a
large skull.
