Martin guitar enthusiasts are a passionate bunch. The object of their adoration? Beautifully crafted acoustic instruments borne of a guitar-making tradition that stretches back over 170 years and through six generations of the C. F. Martin family. The guitars even purportedly sound better with age and use. Willie Nelson has played his famously beat-up Martin for 30 years. He nicknamed it “Trigger.”

The growing international society of Martin owners and obsessives includes not only luminaries like Nelson, Eric Clapton, and the late Johnny Cash, but thousands of amateur players who simply love the quality and history of C. F. Martin—the oldest family-run guitar company in the United States. And they’ll pay a pretty penny for a Martin too. Case in point: A circa 1930 D-45 (a classic model) recently sold on eBay for $245,000. It had cost under $300 new, not an inconsiderable sum for the time, but still, who could have predicted how high its value would soar?

Martin guitar owners and admirers have long made the pilgrimage to visit the company headquarters and factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, an hour north of Philadelphia and an hour and a half from New York City. And with the recent opening of the new and expanded Martin Guitar Museum and Factory, now there’s a lot more to see. Open since February, the 4,500-square-foot museum took 10 years to plan and execute. It showcases the history of the company and gives visitors a chance to view and even strum some of its most celebrated models.

Martin Guitar’s long history begins in the 1820s with Christian Frederick Martin, Sr., who took up the family craft of guitar making at 15 and traveled from his village in Germany to Vienna to apprentice with a renowned guitar maker named Johann Stauffer. Several years later, with a new family in tow, Martin returned to his hometown to set up his own shop. But restrictive guild policies thwarted him and prompted him to emigrate to the United States in 1833.

He established a shop in New York City, at 196 Hudson Street (now right by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel), but the Martins never felt at home in the city. They missed the pastoral German countryside and felt lonesome for their native culture, especially for its Christmas traditions, which had yet to take hold in New York. C. F. Martin and his wife, Ottilie, considered returning to Europe but then discovered a German community practically in their backyard.

In 1836, following the lead of his former business partner and good friend Henry Schatz (who had also urged him to sail for America), Martin sold his business and moved his family to the outskirts of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Nazareth was a Moravian settlement, and though the Moravians loved music and socializing, they closed themselves off to outsiders. In fact only members of the church were allowed to live in the town proper. Still, the Martins enjoyed living near so many German immigrants and in a landscape that even resembled that of Saxony, the region they’d left behind. Eventually they converted to the Moravian denomination and moved into town, where they established the business that is still in operation today. The old family home now serves as the visitor center for the town.

The guitar company took hold and began growing, even through the Civil War and the postwar economic crisis. The Moravians seemed barely affected by the battles that raged as close as a hundred miles away. C. F. Martin’s early guitars were entirely handmade and had idiosyncratic details like adjustable necks and a design that placed all the tuning keys on one side—a pattern Martin had picked up from a Viennese master. In the 1850s he pioneered the “X-bracing system,” which is still employed in all steel-string Martin guitars and is behind the distinctive Martin tone.

By the time C. F. Martin died, in 1873, his one-man operation had grown into a thriving company that employed more than a dozen craftsmen and that had moved from the Martin family homestead into a full-fledged plant, built in 1859 (the operations would move again in 1964, to their current site on Sycamore Street). Poised to take over the family business was his son, C. F. Martin, Jr., 48. He would be the first of five sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons to step into C. F. Martin’s boots.

As the business grew over the years, Martin guitars changed with the times, bringing distribution in-house and adding mandolins and ukuleles (both popular in the 1920s and ’30s) to its production line. Electric models were added in the 1970s, with mixed results. There have been ups and downs and even an acrimonious labor dispute that resulted in factory workers striking and picketing. But today the brand is as strong as ever and even has a distributor in Japan, where it is especially popular. And in a culture that becomes more disposable by the day, the integrity of the Martin product has won ever greater currency with its fans.

Chris Martin IV, the current chairman and chief executive, realized a longtime dream when the new museum opened this winter. It’s in a building with a façade of the traditional soft red brick native to the area (but manufactured out of state), designed to look like the original factory. Inside, the look is contemporary, with a focus on displaying the museum’s 190 instruments. You enter through a guitar-shaped lobby and proceed chronologically through the history of the company and the family. Dramatic lighting and soaring glass walls showcase the stunning guitars and photographs of famous owners. There’s a reproduction of a workspace from the nineteenth century, and a definite highlight of the museum is the “Pickin’ Parlor,” a room where adult visitors can play select Martin models (and there are other models for kids to try in the lobby).

Next, you move on to a factory tour, where you get an overview of the machinery used and are led through the various stages of guitar making, including neck fitting, bracing, and pearl inlaying. Each task is performed by a specialist, some of them second- or third-generation Martin employees. Production is more mechanized than in the days when each instrument was made entirely by one artisan, but the company still hews to tradition at every step.

Finally, you can pop into the 1833 Store, and buy Martin caps and T-shirts—but not guitars. Those have to be purchased through authorized distributors (and usually pre-ordered). An inexpensive Martin, a full-size DXM, goes for around $600, while a top of the line D-45 costs $8,849. Some limited edition models retail for $100,000. One of Chris Martin’s contributions was the introduction of the oddly-shaped “Backpacker,” an affordable (less than $400) and portable guitar perfect for traveling. And what will the seventh generation of the Martin family bring to the company? You’ll have to ask Chris’s daughter, Claire Frances. She is 19 months old, but she may become the first female to take the helm.

По всей стране продолжаются опыты по скрещиванию скворечников с гитарными грифами. Вот этот снимок я сделал три года назад в районном городе Фурманов на местном рок-фестивале. Это старейший фурманёвский рокер "профессор Преображенский" со своей самопальной гитарой. Лично слышал, как она играет да еще и издает довольно брутальные звуки.

А вот это похоже какой-то его собрат по конструированию гитарных скворечников. Фендер отдыхает!
