The John Lennon I embraced was a life-sized statue
of the great man in a park named after him.
You could be forgiven for thinking that the park
is located in Liverpool, London or New York.
But it is actually in Havana, Cuba. John Lennon,
along with Che Guevara and Fidel Castro,
has been immortalized as a friend of the Cuban revolution.
Given Lennon's often radical views and his
strong support for the peace movement in the West,
it seems appropriate that the former Beatle
should be admired in Cuba.
So, on December 8, 2000 the 20th anniversary
of his death a bronze statue depicting a pensive Lennon,
by artist Jose Villa, was unveiled in front of a crowd that
included about 200 members of Havana's Beatles Soul Club.
