Shortly after 8:45am, while Linda is taking the children to school, Paul rings his brother Mike in Liverpool to inform him of John's death. As Mike recalls in the Liverpool Echo newspaper: "Paul was too distressed to talk properly. He just said, 'Keep sending the good vibes down from Liverpool to help him through the day.' It is going to be a busy day for him and he is very, very upset."

At 11:29am, as Paul attempts to leave his Sussex farmhouse, he is greeted by an army of reporters who have been camping outside his home since the news of John's death broke. Still in a complete state of shock, Paul has this to offer: "I can't take it at the moment. John was a great man who'll be remembered for his unique contributions to art, music and peace. He is going to be missed by the whole world."

Paul is driven to London where he joins Denny Laine and George Martin at AIR Studios, where they spend the afternoon recording, to the best of their ability, a small piece of the track 'Rainclouds'. During the afternoon, Paul telephones Yoko at the Dakota to offer his further condolences.

Meanwhile, a team from the nation's media has gathered outside the studio, all eager to obtain Paul's further reactions. When he finally leaves the studio in the early evening, he is unable to express his feelings towards John's tragic death. Finally confronted, he offhandedly remarks to the reporters: "It's a drag, innit?" The comment is sadly mistaken as being flippant.

На одном из ДВД "John Lennon From The Vaults" записан этот момент. Позже, в 1984 году в интервью Плэйбою, Пол оправдывался:

McCartney's denial kept grief in closet

After John Lennon was shot dead, a grieving world wanted -- indeed, needed -- to see Paul McCartney, with a wrenched heart, struggling to cope with the sudden loss of his dear friend. Like the rest of us.

But pretty much the opposite transpired. Caught by a camera crew leaving a London recording studio a day after Lennon's murder in New York City, McCartney said with all matter-of-factness:

"It's a drag."

No emotion. No "I can't believe my best mate is gone." No sign of love behind the missing tears.

Just: "It's a drag."

If millions of people worldwide found themselves sobbing, unable to come to grips with the tragedy, how was it McCartney -- Lennon's soulmate for more than a decade -- could be so seemingly cold and unaffected? His reaction still outrages many Beatles fans.

WENT TO WORK

In 1984 McCartney and wife Linda gave Playboy magazine an in-depth interview, during which he explained his infamous public utterance.

"What happened was we heard the news that morning and, strangely enough, all of us ... the three Beatles, friends of John's ... all of us reacted in the same way. Separately," McCartney told Playboy. "Everyone just went to work that day ... Nobody could stay home with that news.

"As I was coming out of the studio later, there was a reporter, and as we were driving away, he just stuck the microphone in the window and shouted, 'What do you think about John's death?' I had just finished a whole day in shock and I said, 'It's a drag.' I meant drag in the heaviest sense of the word, you know: 'It's a -- DRAG.' But when you look at that in print, it says, 'Yes, it's a drag.' Matter of fact.

"What could you say? ... I still haven't taken it in. I don't want to."

He was in denial. Just as when his mother died when he was 14. His way of dealing with that enormous loss was to lock up his emotions in public, and not talk about it even in private. The same thing was happening again.

"(Linda and I) just looked at all the news on the telly, and we sat there with all the kids, just crying all evening. Just couldn't handle it, really."

LEFT ON GOOD NOTE

McCartney said it was "a consoling factor" to know that his last phone chat with Lennon was pleasant and didn't end, as so many of their post-Beatles conversations had, with them blowing up at each other and slamming down the phone.

To Rolling Stone magazine in 1986, McCartney elaborated.

"The last couple of phone calls (John and I) had were getting very nice. I remember once he said to me, 'Do they play me against you like they play you against me?' Because there were always people in the background pitting us against each other.

"And I said, 'Yeah, they do. They sure do.' That was a couple of months before he ... it's still weird even to say, 'before he died.' I still can't come to terms with that. I still don't believe it.

"It's like, you know, those dreams you have where he's still alive, then you wake up and ... 'Oh.'

Paul McCartney has revealed that he is still haunted by John Lennon’s ‘horrific’ death 25 years ago.

Despite still being affected by the horrible nature of Lennon’s untimely death, Macca says he still remembers the good times with John.

In a candid interview with Radio 2’s Steve Wright on the week of the 25th anniversary of Lennon’s murder, Macca said: “The first thing that goes through your mind is the horrific conditions of his death. That's what always hits me. And you think: ‘Gosh, my mate, that's what happened to him.’

"But, then rather than dwell on that I immediately go to the fantastic times we had and how lucky and privileged I feel to be one of the people who spent the most time with him during his life having met him as a teenager.

"People start these rumours: ‘He was this, he was that.’ I say: ‘Look, I've slept with him.’ We've done hitch-hiking holidays and we've had to top and tail it because there was only one bed. I say: ‘I knew him’.

"And, we'd get drunk together and do all those kinds of things that you find out about people.

"The bottom line, I think what everybody already knows, he was a fantastic man, really fantastic guy. Just as a man, as an activist, he is one of the great men of the 20th century.

"I'm just very proud to have known him so intimately from when we were kids to virtually the end all the way through."

Despite well documented rifts between the pair, Paul says that he still feels a close affinity to Lennon, saying: "I do (have a connection) and I don't expect it to go even though we are separated by death. It's just something I will always feel, some sort of link with John that's for sure."

Попробую перевести фрагмент интервью Пола Плэйбою 1984-го года. Если что-то неправильно, старшие товарищи наверняка поправят.

"...Вот как это произошло... В то утро мы услышали новости, и все мы – трое битлов, друзья Джона – реагировали одинаково. Независимо друг от друга. Каждый просто занялся работой в тот день. Каждый из нас. Никто не мог оставаться дома с такими новостями. Мы все должны были заняться делом, и быть с людьми, которых мы знали. Иначе было невыносимо. Поэтому я уехал и проработал весь день в эмоциональном потрясении. И, позднее, когда я выходил из студии и мы собрались уезжать, какой-то репортер засунул микрофон в окно и заорал: «Что ты думаешь о смерти Джона?» У меня весь день прошел в шоке, и я сказал: «Надоело». Я имел ввиду надоело в трагическом значении этого слова, понимаешь: «Надо-е-ло» Но, знаешь, когда ты видишь это напечатанным, получается просто: «Надоело». Все зависит от того, как преподнести..."

Вообще, попробую вырезать из ДВД этот фрагмент, может Corvin вставит в Медиа-архив. А то, для многих получается как в старой присказке: "Я сам не видал, но мой дядя видал как барин едал"

я даже испугалась...было состояние глубокой депрессии с дикой болью в душе...
и самое ужасное то, что не было ответа на вопрос : За что ??!!!
сейчас всё как обычно...но тогда...блин...

В одной книге я читала про реакцию Пола. Репортерам он сказал: "Это так скучно". По этой книге, он повторил слова Джона из их последнего с Ленноном разговора, который закончился очень хорошо. Джон тогда сказал: "Это так скучно - не быть богом" (кем битлы были в 60-х). И Пол, находясь в шоке, этими словами хотел сказать то же, что и Джон - "Я устал не быть богом". Правда, это книга скорее художественная, чем документальная, и поэтому я точно не знаю, говорил ли Леннон что-то подобное. Но хочется думать, что Пол все же не холодный человек, верно?..

"When I read the story of John's shooting," he said, "there was a bit in it when he's in the ambulance going to hospital, and apparently it's standard procedure to say to whoever it is who's been shot or injured, 'Do you know who you are?' Which I thought was very ironic to ask John. I could almost imagine him laughing. 'Oh God, the final irony!''Do you know who you are?''Yeah, I'm John Lennon.' It just seemed very trippy to me. So I always remembered that phrase and I worked it into the oratorio."
