This Limited Edition Martin 000-ECHF Eric Clapton Belleza Nera Signature Model retails in Australia for $10,995. One of only 476 such guitars in the world. This Limited Edition Martin 000-ECHF Eric Clapton Belleza Nera Signature Model retails in Australia for $10,995. One of only 476 such guitars in the world.

Imagine a guitar cooperatively conceived by a British musical icon and a Japanese trendsetter, built by America's most respected guitar company and affectionately given an Italian name. Now stop imagining and start anticipating the new Martin Eric Clapton/Hiroshi Fujiwara Bellezza Nera, among the most stunning looking and sounding limited editions in Martin history.

A legendary musician and performer for more than 40 years, Eric Clapton needs no introduction. Hiroshi Fujiwara stands as one of modern Japan's most important cultural figures, a visionary DJ responsible for creating and introducing cutting-edge "club" music and fashions to Tokyo in the 1990s. The two became friends while working together on music projects.

During one of Clapton's visits to Japan, he and Fujiwara began envisioning a custom acoustic guitar that blended the best in design and sound. Over time, the ideas were fleshed out and, with Martin's Dick Boak facilitating the project, C.F. Martin built eight of these unique custom guitars. One can be seen on the cover of Clapton's recent album dedicated to the music of blues great Robert Johnson, "Me & Mr. Johnson," while another appears on the cover of Dick Boak's recent book, "Martin Guitar Masterpieces." The completed guitars were so breathtaking that Eric, Hiroshi and Martin agreed to collaborate on a limited edition version for the public.

At Eric Clapton's suggestion, the model is named in Italian, the language of music - "Bellezza" meaning beautiful and "Nera" meaning black. The polished black gloss finished body, neck and headplate, and matching African black ebony fingerboard and bridge on this 14-fret 000 - Clapton's favorite Martin model - provides an eye-catching "canvas" for some beautiful yet tasteful inlays and appointments.

The unique custom rosette that adorns the soundhole features a center ring of Martin's traditional small Mother Of Pearl slotted square inlays set against a black background. Fine pattern herringbone encircles the top, while bold pattern herringbone bordered in white bisects the back. The polished headplate provides an elegant backdrop for Martin's elaborate "alternative torch" inlay, a design originally created on one of the first Martin 00-45s in 1902 and revived in 2000 for Eric Clapton 000-42EC Signature Edition.

Equally striking are specially made sterling silver-plated Schaller tuners with sterling silver-plated buttons. The fingerboard features Martin's Style 45 snowflake inlays, with "Bellezza Nera" inlaid in script above the last fret in mother of pearl. To allow its elegance to shine unrestrained, this guitar comes without a pickguard.

Within the Bellezza Nera's handsome appointments lies a tone monster, crafted in the Martin tradition. Premium Solid tonewoods are featured throughout. The top is Italian alpine spruce, (the same tone wood used by Antonio Stradivari) revered for its rich, powerful tone. The back and sides are crafted from East Indian rosewood, which provides both strong projection and roundness to the tonal palette. Carved from solid genuine mahogany, the neck features Martin's diamond volute at the base of the headstock.

Each Bellezza Nera includes a special black interior label personally signed by Eric Clapton, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Martin Artist Relations head Dick Boak and Martin Chairman C.F. Martin IV. In keeping with the black theme, this guitar comes with a special Geib™ style hardshell case with black plush interior and black anodized hardware.

Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover,"Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover,

Something in the way she woos me ..."

Beautiful words, written for a very special lady.

"I tried to give you consolation when your old man had let you down,

Like a fool, I fell in love with you, turned my whole world upside down ..."

More passionate lyrics for the same special lady, but by another guy.

Of all the love triangles of the stars, none has spawned as many great songs as the romantic tug of war which, from the 1960s through the 1980s, linked George Harrison, Eric Clapton and British model Pattie Boyd. Both "Something" by The Beatles and "Layla" by Clapton's Derek & the Dominos were written for Boyd and are among the most familiar love songs of the 20th century.

But they hold another distinction: They were personal messages of love written to a specific person. They are representative of those times when songwriters transcend commerce to share their actual feelings with the world. On Valentine's Day, it's interesting to peek into the envelope at some of the private love letters that became popular songs.

Harrison met 19-year-old Boyd on the set of "A Hard Days Night." She had a boyfriend of two years, photographer Eric Swayne, but eventually allowed the famous Mop-Top to take her out for dinner and a drive around London. They became inseparable and married in 1966. Boyd became the well-documented inspiration for several of Harrison's songs recorded by The Beatles, including "For You Blue," "I Need You," "So Sad" and "Something," a ballad that Frank Sinatra famously labeled "the greatest love song ever written." "Something" is the second most covered song by The Beatles and is certified the 17th most performed song of the 20th century, with more than 5 million performances.

But that wasn't the extent of Boyd's inspiration. Clapton, consumed with an unrequited love for his friend Harrison's wife, slipped into a spiral of heroin and alcohol abuse, which resulted in both a several-year hiatus from the music business and some of his best songs. The sole studio album by Derek & the Dominos was driven by his destructive desire for Boyd, and its fiery single "Layla" (the title comes from an Iranian tale of romantic obsession) was written by Clapton, with the trailing piano movement by the Dominos' Jim Gordon. Rolling Stone ranked the song No. 27 among its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

"Pattie Boyd was the inspiration for a disproportionate amount of extremely well-known songs," says Howard Kramer, curatorial director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "Why do we care? One was a Beatle and the other is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time. It's a script that, if Hollywood wrote it, would be considered the work of a hack."

The story doesn't end with two songs. Harrison and Boyd divorced in 1977, and she married Clapton two years later. She was the inspiration for his songs "Never Make You Cry," "Pretty Girl" and "Wonderful Tonight," co-written by Michael Kamen. Boyd and Clapton divorced in 1988.

While portions of Boyd's romantic life have been publicized through song, she's led an otherwise private life. A commercial photographer, Boyd lives near London with real-estate developer Rod Weston. She co-founded an addiction recovery charity with Ringo Starr's wife Barbara Bach, and on Valentine's Day, 2004, hosted a San Francisco exhibit of her celebrity photos. Late last year, she signed as a spokesmodel for Viyella, a British fashion designer.

Boyd is modest about inspiring some of the greatest love songs ever written.

"All I can say," she told CNN last year, "is I feel deeply flattered and honored. ... I don't know what else to say. I guess I'm really lucky."

Life with Beatles, Clapton shown in ex-wife's photos By Adam Tanner Life with Beatles, Clapton shown in ex-wife's photos By Adam Tanner
Thu Feb 16, 9:04 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The images show some of the best-known names in pop music history in unguarded casual poses. The photographer, the former wife of George Harrison and Eric Clapton, certainly had a unique vantage point.

For many years, Pattie Boyd was celebrated in song but kept a low public profile. On Thursday, she spoke about her life ahead of a new exhibit of her photos in San Francisco.

Pausing in front of her photo of Harrison and blues guitar maestro Clapton together with cigarettes in their hands in the mid-1970s, she reflected on the end of her marriage to the former Beatle around that time.

She said Clapton was not to blame. "There was a natural ending to my relationship with George as husband and wife."

The blond-haired, English-born Boyd met Harrison during the 1964 filming of "A Hard Day's Night" in which she had a small part. The two struck up a relationship and she later inspired Harrison's best-known love song, "Something."

"What he couldn't understand is why he was famous," she said before an image of Harrison in the British countryside. "He came from humble beginnings and the struggle (to achieve fame) was not that great." Harrison died in 2001.

Clapton also grew smitten with her and wrote the plaintive 1970 song "Layla" for her. "Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please," Clapton sang to Boyd.

"It was kind of embarrassing because something that is clearly meant to be quite intimate and between two people was now going to be heard by hundreds of people," she said.

Clapton eventually won her heart, and the two married in 1979 (they divorced in 1988). She never learned to play the guitar, although she sang background vocals on the Beatles "All You Need is Love" and "Yellow Submarine."

INSPIRED INDIA TRIP

As she walked through the San Francisco Art Exchange, she noted how often Clapton's appearance changed.

"Look at the sideburns," an amused Boyd said of one image. "He could change his appearance incredibly, scruffy one day, smart the next."

In another image of Clapton, she noted it was clearly daytime as he was depicted with a glass of whiskey nearby, something she said was very much part of his life at the time. Boyd was also present at noted episodes involving drugs in Beatle lore, including the first time Harrison and John Lennon took LSD.

"We were spiked. We went to what we thought was a rather grown-up dinner party and we were told to drink the coffee," she said. "We told our host that we were going to go, we wanted to go to a club, and he said, "No, no, no, you've had LSD."

"It was very, very scary."

Boyd's interest in meditation helped lead the band to its famous retreat in India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Several photos she found mislabeled in her archives a few years ago show the Beatles relaxed during their time there when they wrote many of the songs that appeared on the "White Album."

"It was wonderful and it was inspiring," she said of the retreat. But "it was not a fluffy towel holiday."

The former model first staged a big photography show in San Francisco last year, when she sold $150,000 of images, said gallery owner Theron Kabrich. Several images, which include images of the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck and newer travel photos, have already sold, even though her latest exhibit formally opens only on Friday.

"I mean they are not great shots, they are not great photographs because they are just snaps recording a certain point in time," said Boyd, who now lives alone. "I just knew all these people. They were all just like friends."

Repertoire Books, a division of Repertoire Entertainment will publish "Cream: The Lost Scottish Tour" on 13 March. The 132 page hardcover book will feature numerous photographs from 1967 and 1968 by well-known rock photographer, Robert Whitaker. The images capture the band in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, most previously unseen.

Whitaker accompanied Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker during Cream's Scottish Tour in the summer of 1967. He shot the cover for Cream's classic album, "Disraeli Gears" during this time. He photographed the band again in 1968. Whitaker is also known for his work with The Beatles traveling with them on their world tours from 1964-1966 and from several of the band's album covers ("Revolver" and "Yesterday and Today" - also known as "The Butcher Cover").

"Cream: The Lost Scottish Tour" has text by former Melody Maker journalist and Cream and Clapton author, Chris Welch. Foreword by Pete Brown, lyricist of several Cream songs including "Sunshine of Your Love" and "I Feel Free."
