Live 8 Artists Profit, Pink Floyd Give It Away

In a charitable move, the temporarily reformed Pink Floyd have announced they’ll be handing over all the extra profits they’ve made from their 1343% album sales increase following Live 8.

Pink Floyd have confirmed they’ll be donating all profits made on the back of their Live 8 reformation to charity and are urging other performers to do the same.

Floyd album sales have rocketed following the band’s performance with fans flocking to buy copies of the band's greatest hits album, ‘Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd’.

Guitarist David Gilmour explained the band would not profit from the show,

"Though the main objective has been to raise consciousness and put pressure on the G8 leaders, I will not profit from the concert," he said. "If on Thursday the G8 leaders tick the right three boxes at Gleneagles then the main objective will have been fulfilled.

"If other artists feel like donating their extra royalties to charity, perhaps then the record companies could be persuaded to make a similar gesture and that would be a bonus. This is money that should be used to save lives."

As with the 1985 Live Aid, the bands that took part on July 2 have almost all experienced a sales increase. While Floyd were the highest ‘jumpers’, sales of The Who’s ‘Then & Now’ leapt up by 863%, Annie Lennox’s ‘Eurythmics Greatest Hits’ jumped by 500% and Razorlight also saw an increase as sales of ‘Up All Night’ rose by 335%.

As expected, within pirate Live 8 DVDs were found on sale on eBay. A spokesman for Bob Geldof said, "The people that do this are cretins and scum."

In other news, over four hundred people have filed complaints with the BBC over the repeated swearing by artists onstage at Live 8 before the 9pm watershed. Rapper Snoop Dogg swore throughout his 5 minute hits medley, while Madonna greeted the crowd with a cheery, “Are you f**king ready London?”

A spokeswoman for the BBC commented, "Millions of people enjoyed our 12 hours of live broadcasting. We are sorry if any offence was caused."

Donate Live 8 profit says Gilmour

Artists and record firms who have seen album sales soar after Live 8 should donate their profits to charity, Pink Floyd star Dave Gilmour has said.

"I will not profit from the concert," the guitarist said. "This is money that should be used to save lives."

Lib Dem culture spokesman Don Foster said performers should donate "the profits that Live 8 helped to create".

Universal Music said it would give its profits from digital downloads of Sir Paul McCartney's performance to Live 8.

"One hundred per cent of the revenues we receive from the downloaded tracks will be passed on to the Band Aid trust," said a company representative.

Live 8's spokesman was unavailable for comment.

Pink Floyd guitarist Gilmour urged artists and record companies to make a charitable donation off the back of Saturday's landmark global concerts.

"Though the main objective has been to raise consciousness and put pressure on the G8 leaders, I will not profit from the concert," he said in a statement.

"If other artists feel like donating their extra royalties to charity, perhaps then the record companies could be persuaded to make a similar gesture and that would be a bonus."

Pink Floyd are one of several participants who have seen sales rocket in the aftermath of Live 8.

According to music retailer HMV, sales of Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd rose 1,343% on Sunday - compared to sales for the previous Sunday - while The Who's Then and Now increased by 863%.

Online retailer Amazon.co.uk reported an equally drastic uplift, with The Wall one of several Pink Floyd albums seeing a huge improvement on the previous week's figures.

In addition to the London line-up, it said, acts appearing at the Eden Project, Berlin and Philadelphia also saw an upturn in sales.

Not every act has benefited, however. Pete Doherty's former band The Libertines saw sales of their Up the Bracket album drop by 35% in HMV stores.

Amazon.co.uk similarly reported no significant rise in sales for Babyshambles, Doherty's current band, whose new album is available to pre-order.

Sir Paul McCartney's rendition of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with U2 topped the iTunes chart in several countries after being made available to download an hour after its performance.

The former Beatle's performances of Hey Jude and The Long and Winding Road can also be obtained online.

"The artists showed huge generosity and compassion this weekend," said Lib Dem Don Foster.

"Now they should continue to show their goodwill by donating the profits that Live 8 helped to create."

The final Live 8 concert, called The Final Push, takes place in Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium on Wednesday, with performers including Travis, Texas, Sugababes and Ronan Keating.

The free concert has been staged to coincide with the Long Walk to Justice rally in the city.

Organiser Bob Geldof was joined by Hollywood acting couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon as he boarded a train to Edinburgh from London's Euston station on Tuesday to join the rally.

Wednesday's Live 8 concert will be broadcast on television by BBC Scotland, on radio and online.

However pirate Live 8 DVDs were found on sale on eBay less than 24 hours after Saturday's event and removed shortly afterwards.

"The people that do this are cretins and scum," said Bob Geldof's spokesman.

"Sadly, we are not at all surprised by this incident," said David Martin, the British Phonographic Industry's director of anti-piracy.

"There are too many people out there who believe music is for stealing, regardless of the wishes of artists and the people who invest in them."

Meanwhile, P Diddy has apologised for failing to turn up at the Philadelphia Live 8 concert on Saturday, where he had been scheduled to perform.

His spokesman said the rap star "totally supports the mission of Live 8 and is sorry he couldn't attend" - but did not give a reason for his absence.

Crosby, Stills & Nash 'sorry' for Live 8 no-show

They couldn't make it due to logistical problems.

Reformed folk rock legends Crosby, Stills & Nash have apologized to fans and organizers of the Berlin Live 8 concert after failing to make the show.

The band, currently on tour across Europe, were due to play a late afternoon slot. However, because of 'logistical problems due to time with their tour', the band were unable to make the concert, held on the streets of Berlin, despite David Crosby managing to charter a plane.

"After working many hours to try and support Live8 and David Crosby even helping to secure a plane as CSN was prepared to do the show, the band was not able to get a workable slot in the Berlin performance sequence that would have put them back in Bonn to perform a tour date that was previously routed prior to any announcement of the Live 8 event," Gerry Tolman, manager of Crosby, Stills & Nash said Monday.

"They are extremely sad that they could not be a part of this historic event."

LIVE 8 stars vowed yesterday to donate to charity massive profits from the Hyde Park gig after a Mirror call.

Profits from soaring CD sales and downloads in the first week after Bob Geldof's Make Poverty History concert for Africa could top £1million. Urged by the Mirror, Paul McCartney, The Who's Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, Eurythmics' Annie Lennox and Keane agreed to pledge their shares.

They follow Pink Floyd lead guitarist Dave Gilmour, who earlier declared: "This money should be used to save lives." Other stars said their charity donations remained private but hinted they would also contribute.

Geldof said last night: "This is very much in the spirit of the day. It's a wonderful gesture and if others want to do it, that's fantastic."

Macca's performance with U2 on Saturday of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band topped the iTunes chart in several countries. Yesterday, Universal Music said it would donate profits from digital downloads.

Sales of The Who's album Then and Now are up 863 per cent. A spokesman for the band said: "They were impressed with what Dave Gilmour is doing.

"Should any significant extra royalties come in they'd look at doing the same."

Sales of Eurythmics' Greatest Hits soared 500 per cent. A spokesman for Annie Lennox said: "She feels donations are appropriate. She'll definitely give something back."

Keane's Hopes & Fears album rose 101 per cent. The band said: "Like Dave Gilmour, we'll ensure we don't profit from Live 8."

Coldplay will figure out the Live 8 impact and decide whether to join in at the end of the week.

U2 and Dido would not confirm any charity pledge. But they agreed that "generally artists make anonymous donations".

Even former Libertines star Pete Doherty said he was ready to donate cash. But his disastrous performance with Elton John sent The Libertines' Up the Bracket album crashing by 35 per cent. Only spokesmen for Madonna and REM, both big charity givers, declined to comment.

Gilmour spoke out after it was revealed sales of Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd rose by an amazing 1,343 per cent in one day.

He said on Monday, three days before G8 leaders debate Africa at their summit in Gleneagles: "I will not profit from the concert.

"If G8 leaders tick the right boxes at Gleneagles the main objective will be fulfilled.

"If others feel like donating their extra royalties to charity perhaps the record companies could make a similar gesture."

He said he was not speaking for other members of the band.

The Official Chart Company, which compiles the Download Chart, confirmed: "A lot of acts at Live 8 are benefiting."

Lib Dem culture spokesman Don Foster urged other Live 8 artists to join the giving. He said: "They showed huge generosity in taking part. Now they should continue to show their goodwill."

DOHERTY BLAMES GELDOF'S SAUCY DAUGHTER FOR DUET DISASTER

LATEST: Troubled rocker PETE DOHERTY has blamed Live 8 co-organiser SIR BOB GELDOF's daughter for his disastrous duet with SIR ELTON JOHN at the historic concert - insisting she made a pass at him seconds before he went on stage.

The BABYSHAMBLES frontman could barely stand up when he joined John onstage to sing T-REX hit CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION.

But he has slammed accusations his poor performance was caused by drugs, insisting Geldof's 16-year-old daughter, PEACHES put him off, by fondling him and whispering obscenities in his ear.

He says, "I wasn't lost for words and I wasn't out of it on drugs. Just before I went on stage, Peaches squeezed my bum hard and whispered something rather suggestive to me. It left me in such shock, I didn't know where I was.

"Bob Geldof has organised this amazing global event, I was facing 210,000 people, the cameras are rolling, and f**king Elton John is duetting with me. And Bob's daughter has secretly made a pass at me.

"It's all I can think about. It did my head in. I didn't think Bob would be very happy."
