Simon Dupree started out The Howling Wolves and later became The Road Runners, a Portsmouth-based R&B band. 'Simon Dupree' was actually vocalist Ray Shulman and the band got the new name in 1966. Their early music was almost entirely soul, mostly Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding covers.
Their debut 45, I See The Light, was a good stomping R&B number, but it made little impression on the record buying public. The flip side was more soul-based with lots of brass. Their follow-up, Reservations, was an uptempo, organ-driven R&B number, which was certainly one of their better singles. It's sales were quite encouraging although it failed to make the Charts. The flip side, You Need A Man, was frankly nondescript.
Their next release, Day Time, Night Time, was another organ-led R&B belter. A fine record of its type but again it failed to Chart. The flip side was similar in style but a weaker composition.
Their album, Without Reservations, released at the start of August 1967, included much of the material from their live act. There's the soul medley, 60 Minutes Of Your Love/A Lot Of Love, a cover of Sam Cooke's Amen, as well as some self-penned compositions like Who Cares and Get Off My Bach. The only remotely psych-pop track was There's A Little Picture Playhouse and the album certainly isn't worth purchasing for connoisseurs of psychedelia, but it is if soul or R&B is your scene.
The release of the quasi-psychedelic Kites in October 1967 marked a drastic change of image and musical direction. Recorded at the Abbey Road studios it's full of interesting sound effects and instruments like the mellotron, gongs and vibraphone. It shot them into the Top Ten but gave them an image that was at odds with their R&B roots which they had difficulty reconciling themselves to. The flip side, Like The Sun Like The Fire, also had a hint of Sgt. Pepper about it but wasn't quite as good.
From here on the band's career was in decline through their failure to score another Top Twenty hit. Of their later singles, For Whom The Bell Tolls and Broken Hearted Pirates, are the most interesting. The former did reach No 43 in the Charts in April 1968. It features some pleasant flamenco-style guitar and another strong vocal performance from Ray Shulman as well as tolling bells, naturally. They also recorded a single called We Are The Moles Pts 1 And 2 (Parlophone R 5743) under the pseudonym of The Moles in 1968. When the group dissolved in 1969, the Shulman brothers went on to form Gentle Giant.

The Renegades formed in Birmingham England. In '65 they went to Finland to play in a fashion show . The audience suprised at their playing ,real Blitish Beat!. Soon they moved to Finland where they had mega hit with "Cadilac". It made No.1 hit, and the song became a household number in Scandinabian bands. They were genuine beat and pop band. They played mostly originals, and also covered cool version of "The Girl Can't Help It" and "Take A Heart"(Sorrows number). After several hit records in Finland, the Renegades made a tour in Italy. They stayed there because they are as popular as in Scandinavia. The Drummer lives in Italy still now.

This Birmingham beat group formed in 1964. They relocated to Italy in the mid-sixties and actually had several albums released out there, and in other countries such as Holland. Obviously popular in Finland, as well, they also appeared in a film opralli ("Top Rally"), directed by Yrjo Tahtela in 1966. In addition to the four UK 45s, which are all hard to find now, they also cut an acetate, Bye Bye Johnny/She Lied for Morden-based Oak records.
One of their more interesting releases was 13 Women, a Bill Haley hit, originally released in Europe, which found its way onto President for a 1968 45. You can also check this one out on the What A Way To Die and Songs We Taught The Fuzztones compilations. One of their singles was a No 1 hit in Finland in 1965

для кого известные,а для кого и не очень! например тот же Applejacks-в свое время винила в руках не держал,на ЦД выходил только при СССР в 89! да конечно,что то проходило на сборниках,но целиком альбома долгое время было не достать. Knickerbockers-первый раз услышал по каким то вражьим голосам в 66, но в то время вещи типа- Lies,Bella,Stop the music,I'll stay by your side,все с одной бочки-Битлз,а оказалось есть и другие команды! и так практически можно почти о каждой приведенной группе рассказать,т.ч. пусть пипл ест пока есть.

Arguably a marginal case for inclusion here since they are really remembered for playing a crowd-pulling brand of rock'n'roll and R & B. They came together in New York in early 1965 when Cavaliere, Brigati and Cornish all left Joey Dee's Starlighters at the same time. They played their first gig at the Choo Choo Club in Garfield, New Jersey. Their music was soul-based, danceable and immediate and after their debut single, I Ain't Gonna Eat My Heart Out Anymore. met with some initial success, the follow-up Good Lovln made No. 1 and set them on the road to further success. They were the first white rock act to be signed by Atlantic and their music had a wide appeal to both black and white audiences. Groovin', their second No. 1 and possibly their magnum opus, marked a definite change of style. Depicting a long, ecstatic afternoon in the sun it superbly captured the vibes of the Summer of 1967 and is of far more relevance to this book than what had gone before. Other notable slices of superb pop-rock were How Can l Be Sure?, A Girl Like You and It's Wonderful, which made use of sound effects. After the last mentioned the 'Young' was omitted from their title and they increasingly veered towards a sort of goodvibe, jazzy rock. People Gotta Be Free gave them their third and final U.S. No. 1 after which they underwent a changed line-up (from A to B) and changed labels to Columbia. Among the newcomers was Buzzy Feiten who'd previously played with Paul Butterfield.
The new line-up cut two albums, which aroused some interest but little excitement, before finally disbanding in 1972. Felix Cavaliere later went solo recording two critically acclaimed if commercially unsuccessful albums for Bearsville. Robert Popwell joined The Crusaders in 1976 and Cornish and Danelli fronted Bulldog and Fotomaker
