Walter Kolosky's new book, Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra, was published by Abstract Logix Books and available May 22. Power, Passion and Beauty is the first full-length book about the incredible yet elusive MO to include collaborations with the five original members of the legendary jazz-rock fusion group-guitarist and band leader John McLaughlin, drummer Billy Cobham, bass player Rick Laird, pianist Jan Hammer, and violinist Jerry Goodman.
With over 300 pages including rare, never-before-seen images, and exclusive comments from such luminaries as musicians Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, producer Sir George Martin, legendary sound engineer Ken Scott, contemporary art giant Peter Max and many others, Power, Passion and Beauty captures the richness and diversity of the original MO's short-lived career that began in 1971 and focuses in on the influence the music has had ever since.
As befits an attempt to historicize one of the world's loudest and yet most elusive bands, the book also has a companion interactive Web site, which will include additional rare images, musical analysis, special gig list and album cover art sections, a shop for exclusive Mahavishnu Orchestra products and a discussion forum.
The Mahavishu Orchestra was part Jimi Hendrix, part Miles Davis, and part of all that came before and all that would come after. Its genre-busting innovation stemmed from the raw talent of its members which, combined together, produced a never-before-heard and never-since-replicated hybrid sound. Somehow, despite all the mainstream odds and the fact the band featured no vocals, the MO managed to make a large dent in the pop music world of the time. Today, over thirty years since its demise, its sound is at the core of much of the jamband scene and serves as a foundation for a burgeoning fusion music renaissance.
Walter Kolosky, who Allaboutjazz.com called "an extremely versatile writer who provides a good deal of serious information, infused with a healthy dose of humor" for his book Girls Don't Like Real Jazz (Abstract Logix, 2004), employs sound, eclecticism, history, memory and fandom to create a truly memorable slice of musical history. Flipping through the pages of Power, Passion and Beauty will take the reader on a journey through an era of composing and performing that has left its mark on multiple musical genres ranging from classical, hip-hop and progressive rock, to Indian, heavy and death-metal, and even some country tunes. Power, Passion and Beauty will take you back to the moment where it all began and where it is still continuing.

The first annual Silent Planet Fest, a prog rock and metal festival, happens Saturday June 10th, 2006 at Hughesville Camp; Hughesville, PA. Confirmed acts include Jacob's Dream, Rivera/Bomma, Orphan Project, Ajalon, Blissed and Trinity FSG. Also joining will be Axeom, Phoenix and a special Madmen and Dreamers "plug in jam".
Jacob's Dream - With 3 highly acclaimed CDs on Metal Blade Records, this band has taken the melodic metal world by storm. Their brand of signature metal is a combined effort of complicated guitar work, dark melodies, intense technical drumming and passionate energy. Their lyrics are filled with poetic imagery. This band surely matures with age as their music becomes more progressive each new release.
Rivera/Bomma - These guys have exploded on to the technical metal world with an extremely eclectic and passionate melodic metal debut release "Invisible Force", followed by their current superior, "I Am God" on the legendary Mausoleum Records. Their music combines elements of epic, power, prog and guitar hero styles. Strong powerful vocals mixed with technical guitar makes this band a must see for fans of Dio, Santana, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Narnia & Rob Rock. The live show is always a theatrical event. The legendary Steve Faust will be playing keyboards with them for this show.
Orphan Project - is a melodic prog rock band that has released a very much respected debut concept CD called "Orphan Found". The project is the story of a young man who grew up as an adopted child. As he becomes an adult, he begins to search for his roots, looking for answers. The answers come but not in the form that he expected. The band has often been said to contain musical elements of Kansas, Soundgarden and U2.
Ajalon- Their music has touched hearts in over 10 different countries around the world. With the initial launch from Rick Wakeman (YES) and Hope Records, Ajalon has released their second CD, timely titled On the Threshold of Eternity. The songs once again feature the grand scale composition merged with the delicate heart cry of the acoustic folk ballad. Front man and principle songwriter of Ajalon, Randy George, has worked with Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) as his live bass
Blissed - Their first CD was a mix of alternative metal with a very modern sound, giving lead to intense rhythmic breakdowns. This band's vocals are always strong, filled with harmonies, busting out occasionally with passionate screams. To say their live set is powerful is to be an understatement. We'd say they are one of the most passionate bands currently in music. Their new CD "Corrosive" will be on the streets very soon.
Trinity FSG - is a progressive power trio which hits the nail on the head with their sweet melodies and passionate lyrics. Having the ability to write a song with a great hook, their compositions are always memorable, but technical enough to grab those of you who seek fine skilled musicians.
Madmen and Dreamers - This group understands the meaning of fine art as they bring back the epic tradition of the rock opera. They often say they are "reviving the art of storytelling". Typically they will perform with actors/singers and full band. Their latest production is called 'Children of Children', which is a realistic and common story of a one family's separation, reconciliation and redemption. Unfortunately we just don't have enough time to present the full opera so they will perform pieces of it and maybe do some free style jamming. The group has been compared to Pink Floyd's "The Wall", "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Tommy" & "Godspell". Maybe next year we will treat you to this smorgasbord of fine talent.
Phoenix - is a hybrid solo artist taking elements of raprock, techno and hardcore to come up with a very unique sound. As this artist continues to mature his music gets more technical. He is highly entertaining with his emotional music and ability to get a crowd moving. Even the legendary John Berry of Jacob's Dream said, "His show was extremely entertaining, the first time I was able to enjoy a hiphop concert and totally get into it".
Axeom- A local group of high school students who can absolutely shred on their instruments. The group is comprised of music prodigies, playing a bred of hard rock that combines elements of guitar hero with an R&B, Jazz flavored groove. Think what would happen if G3 meet Living Colour. This is an up-in-coming group that needs to be heard.

Concord Music Group will release its 3-cd box set of complete Prestige recordings by Miles Davis's classic 1950s quintet with bonus CD of rare live recordings on May 23. In 1955, after his triumphant appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Miles Davis came into his own as an innovator destined to take jazz into new frontiers. Shortly after Newport, the trumpeter formed his seminal 1950s quintet, comprised of youthful up-and-comers John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones.
Over the course of three studio dates, the quintet changed history, recording five albums for Prestige Records that are still, a half-century later, heralded as masterworks. On May 23, these bebop, hard-bop, and balladic recordings, largely from five albums—The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin', Workin', Relaxin', and Steamin'—will be released together as the Prestige boxed set The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions by the Concord Music Group. The music, all of which was taped by Rudy Van Gelder at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, has been remastered in 24-bit from the original analog masters and presented in the sequence recorded at sessions beginning in November 1955 and concluding in October 1956.
The box contains 32 selections, including such compositions as "Four, " "Trane's Blues, " "My Funny Valentine, " "Tune Up, " and "When Lights Are Low" that are to this day essential tunes of the standard repertoire. A bonus CD features eight previously unissued radio and television audio performances. Included on Disc 4 are two tunes from The Tonight Show With Steve Allen: a fiery, hard-swinging romp through Oscar Pettiford's "Max Is Making Wax" and a lyrical rendition of Rodgers and Hart's ballad "It Never Entered My Mind, " both introduced by the television talk show host.
The set is packaged in an attractive box that features cover art by Davis (the painting "New York by Night") and includes five complete musical transcriptions of Miles's solos (suitable for framing) and a 40-page booklet with insightful annotations by Bob Blumenthal.
Blumenthal points out in the liners that 1955 was a tipping-point year for the trumpeter/bandleader, noting that "the Miles Davis Quintet heard here was Davis's means of seizing the moment when his physical health and his musical concepts were on an upswing, and when the public and the music industry had finally begun to pay attention." Blumenthal adds: "This is the band Davis organized when he wanted his recordings to stand for more than snapshots of his momentary interests."
The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions celebrates not only the 80th anniversary year of Davis's birth but also the 50th anniversary of the bulk of these recording sessions.
Prestige Records, founded in New York in 1949 and operated by Bob Weinstock, was a prominent independent jazz label of the 1950s and '60s that documented the giants of the music, including Davis, Coltrane, and Garland as well as Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, and Jackie McLean. It was acquired in May 1971 by Fantasy, Inc., which in turn was purchased by the Concord Music Group in November 2004.

Russell Gunn will perform in Miles Davis' home town
Trumpet extraordinaire Russell Gunn is coming home as the Marquee Artist for the Lifting the Legacy: Miles, MO' Music & Juneteenth Jazz Concert on May 26, 2006 at the Blackmon Entertainment Plaza in East St. Louis, IL. The Grammy-Award-nominated Gunn is a recording artist with eleven CDs to his credit. Russell's much anticipated new release is due out on October 24th 2006. Tentatively titled The Blue Pill (Highnote Records), the CD is a collection of jazz standards with the Russell Gunn "funky twist".
The concert is a collage of art disciplines and people merging for what may appear, at first glance, to be a wonderful tribute to the legendary Miles Davis to celebrate his 80th birthday. Anne Walker of Freedom Trails says, "This could easily be a stand-alone concert for Miles, but that's only the first part of the story of dedicated people with little resources, making an against the grain effort to revive a culture, a tradition (jazz) and a city."
Russell Gunn will conduct a concert related workshop at 1 PM on May 23rd at East St. Louis Sr. High School's auditorium. Russell is a Lincoln High School graduate and protege of Professor Ron Carter. East Side is located at 4700 State St. This workshop will be motivational as well as technical. Russell will address work ethics, diversity, confidence, as well as convey his personal musical journey. This will include his musical accomplishments, noting the people he has performed with in demonstration of a multi-dimensional musician and how that applies to all aspects of life.
Gunn will be accompanied by locally acclaimed artists Reggie Thomas on piano, Montez Coleman on drums, John King on bass, Amos Brewer on sax--and who knows who else will show up? Myers' group includes Rolla Armstead on sax, Dr. London Branch on bass, Aye Aton on drums and Sayeed Jamal on sax. Rolla, now an accomplished Milwaukee legend, was born in Alton and his mother did housework in the Miles Davis home. Branch was a former professor of Music at Jackson State University and teacher for Gunn. Aton was a former drummer for Sun Ra.
Since East St. Louis City Council gave a thumbs up on a resolution to honor Miles with a street sign, it will be erected at 17th & Kansas, where Miles grew up. The late, long presiding State Senator Kenneth Hall, lived in the same block. The honorary sign is to read: An honorary "Hall"Mark: Miles Davis Way, to honor both Davis and Hall. The definition of hallmarking meaning a mark indicating quality or excellence and it is substituting for the word tribute. Neighbors in the 1600 & 1700 blocks of Kansas signed a petition in favor of the street sign.
An honorary name change ceremony will be held on Miles' birthday, Friday, May 26 at noon at the corner of 17th & Kansas. A trumpet fanfare is planned. All trumpet players are welcome to come blow.

8 июня в Саду Эрмитаж выступит немецкий лаунж-проект De Phazz. На счету музыкантов уже пять более чем успешных альбомов: Detunized Gravity (1997), Godsdog (1999), Death by Chocolate (2001), Daily Lama (2002) и Natural Fake (2005).
Annie Lennox and Green Day will receive awards of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers at its 23rd Annual Pop Music Awards on May 22, 2006 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Lennox will be presented with the ASCAP Founders Award and Green Day will receive the ASCAP Creative Voice Award.
Academy Award-winning songwriter Annie Lennox is one of the most influential singer/songwriters of our time. She came to prominence in the 1980s as part of the super-duo the Eurythmics with Dave Stewart and has gone on to a celebrated solo career. A true innovator in every sense of the word, Lennox has done it all with no compromise. She is the recipient of numerous honors, including four Grammy Awards, seven Brit Awards, Ivor Novello Awards, and the prestigious Billboard Century Award in 2002. In 2004, Lennox won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for her work on the original song, "Into The West, " from the film "Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King."
The ASCAP Founders Award honors pioneering songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators. Each recipient is a musical innovator possessing a unique style of songwriting genius enriching future generations. Past Founders Award recipients include Ashford and Simpson, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Garth Brooks, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, James Taylor, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young.
ASCAP President and Chairman Marilyn Bergman said, "Annie Lennox is one of the finest musical voices of our time -- unlike any other, uncompromising and unpredictable. Annie has worn every musical garment possible: Scottish folk singer, jazz singer, punk, rock -- changing her image, but never her commitment to originality and excellence. We are so pleased to honor the multi-talented Annie Lennox with ASCAP's Founders Award this year. Annie will join a very elite group of our Founders Award-winning songwriters, and we are proud to add her name to this list."
ASCAP will also present its Creative Voice Award to multi-Grammy Award winners Green Day. The ASCAP Creative Voice Award, presented for the first time to Metallica in 2004, is bestowed upon an ASCAP member or group whose significant career achievements are equally informed by their creative spirit and by their contributions to the role that a creator can play in their community.
Green Day (Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool), one of the most popular and influential rock bands of the past decade, emerged from Northern California's underground scene with a large cult following in the early 90s. Their audience became international with the release of their Grammy-winning major label debut, "Dookie, " in 1994. The disc featured such best-selling singles as "Longview" and "Basket Case, " and has sold ten million copies to date. Over the years, Green Day have continued their chart-topping ways, with each one of their studio albums reaching the Top Ten -- 2004's "American Idiot, " a critical favorite, debuted at #1. Green Day's latest effort, "Bullet in a Bible, " a live album, is another smash. Green Day are known for their outrageous humor and frenzied live performances, but at the heart of the group's success is songcraft. Their ability to create memorable songs with lyrics that speak to their audience has made them a mainstay of contemporary music.
"Both as singers and songwriters, Green Day is one of the most musically ambitious, innovative groups, as relevant today as when they emerged on the scene as new artists. Never shrinking from controversy, gaining strength from album to album, the ASCAP Creative Voice Award is an honor they richly deserve, '' said Marilyn Bergman.
The late internationally revered icon Miles Davis would have turned 80 years old on May 26, which is being commemorated with a special Concord Box Set to be released May 23. Additionally, a special remix project entitled Evolution Of The Groove featuring Santana and Nas among others will be released this fall to honor the 15th Anniversary of Davis' passing on September 21. A live performance DVD release is also scheduled for release this fall.
2006 is a big year for Miles Davis. He was the sole jazz artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last March alongside Blondie, Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd; The Smithsonian launched Jazz Appreciation Month in April with several of his archival items; He will be posthumously inducted into the Hollywood's RockWalk in recognition of his significant contribution and impact to music, and critically acclaimed actor Don Cheadle will portray Davis in a forthcoming biopic. A gallery exhibition of original paintings and other artworks by Davis is also being planned for the near future. Meanwhile, Davis' business representatives are busy taking meetings with longtime fan and supporter, Carlos Santana, to discuss upcoming projects with Miles Davis Properties.
